Graphic novels can consider as one vital tool in case of cognitive learning, which
provides the interplay of illustrations and text via a comic script, for deploying a story.
Furthermore, to construct a narrative, instead of depending on the only version, it uses several
graphical elements such as frames, panels, thought balloons and speech sequentially. Unlike
the comics, graphic novels are longer and have involved a segment of text that intended to
cover the entire storyline in one book. To provide active shaping with the narrative process
and evoking the reader, the graphic novels need to be more image-based (Baetens, Jan and
Hugo).
The Batman: Year one, is an American graphic novel, written by Frank Miller, which
has recounted the first year of the superhero Batman as a crime fighter. The tremendous
narrative style of the narrator has made all characters iconic. The novel has several roles such
as the heroes-Batman, James Gordon, the villains Arnold Flass, Carmine Falcone, Jefferson
Skeevers and Gillian Loeb. Apart from the heroes and villains, the narrator has also
introduced other characters such as Catwoman, Holly Robinson, Alfred Pennyworth, Stan
Merkel and Sarah Essen, for making an engaging story. Moreover, Miller has deployed
several themes in the novel, which are, justice, ethics, morality, family, relationships, courage
and heroism (Joye, Stijn and Tanneke).
Using motion comics in the graphic novel can be turned as one of the practical,
influential narrative method (Smith). Initially, the hand-drawn work of the artist is set to be
scanned and changed in to the most prominent digital format. The artwork from every panel
is separated into several visual layers for creating more convincing spatial depth. After that,
the combination of speech balloons, soundtrack and voice-vers are set to accompany with the
moving image.

Moreover, the McCloud’s understanding of comics explains that there exist six types
of transitions in a graphic comic novel, which are; movement-to-movement, action-to-action,
scene-to-scene, subject-to-subject, aspect-to-aspect and non-sequitur. Throughout Miller's
Batman: Year One, there exist several fight sequences between the Batman and the foes. As,
the action-to-action transition complements the fight sequences such as kicks, punches and
weapons; hence, the author has used this type of transition in Batman: Year One.
It is necessary to have space between the two panels of a comic; these blank spaces
are named as the gutters. Gutters are responsible for the transition of the moments within the
story. Moreover, gutters are associated with the term closure, which is essential for reading as
well as the writing of any comic. In the case of Batman: Year One, the narrator has chosen a
comparative complex form of gutters. As, the novel evidence many fighting sequences
between the protagonist and the villains; hence, the narrator has shown the action on one page
along with appropriate movement and the dialogues have demonstrated in an individual panel
in a layered manner (Iyyer, Mohit, et al).
Therefore, analysis of the graphic novel Batman: Year one shows that the novel is one
of the tremendous ones, having several iconic characters. Apart from the characters, the
narrator has also undertaken the prominent form of motion and transitions to make it more
attractive. The gutter used here has complimented the entire plot and has helped the narrator
to gain reader attention.
