Do you think being green pays off for companies? Why or why not?
The concept of “green initiative” across supply chain and logistics management is highly
encouraged in regards to the deteriorating environmental conditions, carbon emissions, and increasing
pollution. In addition, innovation has been a point of focus in major supply chain processes so as to
ensure sustainable production and consumptions patterns. The green initiatives organization are
adopting include; green purchasing and reverse logistics. In my opinion, I believe being green pays off for
companies due to two main reasons. To begin with, I believe going green saves money. For instance,
increasing energy efficiency may help reduce utility costs. Secondly, going green may increase the
awareness of a business. Customers are highly drawn to eco-friendly companies, and therefore, going
green may also double a company’s marketing base. This is beneficial to a company since more sales can
be made, thereby doubling revenue and at the same time, protecting the environment.
1.2 How does the Green Initiative help transform traditional Supply Chain Management practices to
sustainable Supply Chain Management practices addressing economic, environmental, and social
aspects of sustainability?
Beginning with economic aspects of sustainability, green initiatives allow supply chain
organizations to adopt sustainable supply chain practices in different ways. For instance, companies are
able to reduce wastage when it comes to production. This allows organizations to save on costs as well
as use less raw materials. Secondly, on the environmental aspect of sustainability, green purchasing/
sourcing allows organizations to be able to purchase environmentally friendly raw materials that have
little to no negative impact on the environment. Lastly, on the social aspect of sustainability, through
green initiatives, companies are able to effectively participate in corporate social responsibility activities,
thereby helping the communities improve their lives as well as protect the environment.

In the context of a Green World, what are the implications of a rapidly growing global population?
It is perceived that as the population grows, the rate of population or environmental impact
increases. This is because, as the population grows, more land may be required for living purposes and
agriculture. In addition, more resources may also be needed to support the well-being of the rapidly
growing population. Therefore, may habitats may be destroyed since nature may not be able to
replenish the resources being consumed at a high rate. In addition, due to the pressure on agriculture
for the need for food, major human activity such as extreme deforestation may affect the environment.
Deforestation may also increase carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere hence affecting human
health as well as other aspects. As more agriculture increases, the intense adoption of industrial
chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers to increase yields may produce waste products that may end up in
rivers, lakes, and pools. This may affect both marine organisms and human beings as well. The quality of
water may also be affected hence destroying plants and vegetation that depend on irrigation.
A rapidly growing population may also contribute to increased atmospheric pollution. For
instance, with more people living in cities, the level of carbon dioxide may increase. This may affect the
ozone layer as more heat may be trapped in the air, thereby contributing to global warming. Harmful
radiation may cause cancer among humans as well as other health complications such as respiratory

problems. This aspect is currently affecting some nations such as China. With China being a heavy
industrial country, air pollution has led to the death of thousands of citizens and workers.

We discussed the topic of green logistics and transportation in class. Briefly discuss at least five activities
and/or strategies companies can use to pursue green logistics and transportation.
To begin with, companies can reduce fleet emissions by adopting fuel solutions that have a low
carbon emission or electric vehicles. Through the shipments of goods from one place to another,
vehicles running on fossil fuels emit a lot of carbon monoxide to the atmosphere. This means that each
mile driven, the air is polluted. Therefore, by streamlining transportation such as in the adoption of
electric vehicles, the environment can be protected as well efficiency can be increased.
Secondly, companies can reduce the amount of waste that comes from replacing vehicle parts.
Vehicles parts are designed to wear out since the parts have a limited life expectancy. The increased rate
of item replacement demonstrates the lack of sustainability in transportation. Therefore, companies
may have to adopt various green solutions to reduce the waste. Thirdly, companies can reduce the
amount of energy consumed. Sustainability is reflected by the amount of energy a shipper uses. In
addition, various modes of transport use different amounts of energy. Therefore, it would be important
to adopt a transportation mode that uses fewer amounts of energy so as to ensure products are
delivered without doubling up the carbon print.
Fourthly, companies should align goals with governmental regulations. Currently, governments
are driving regulations to ensure companies protect the environment as well as achieve sustainability.
Therefore, by adhering to regulations, companies may also save money hence avoiding consequences
such as penalties. Lastly, companies can increase awareness among consumers. In today’s age, the
growth of a company’s image is depended on consumer perception. Therefore, a company may need to
demonstrate its logistics sustainability capability hence improving public perception.

What technology and policy is in Australia now to assist management of pollution and climate control?
Australia is on the fore front in adopting low emissions technologies such as renewable energy
solutions to assist in climate control. For instance, the government has established the solar town's
program so as to ensure that local communities engage with clean, renewable energy. This program is
set to lower electricity costs hence managing pollution and climate control. Through the project,
communities are also becoming more aware of how to participate in lowering the carbon footprint in
the atmosphere. This is crucial if real results will be seen in the Australian atmosphere. In addition, wind
power technology is also being considered since it's affordable and increases efficiency. Wind energy is
crucial when it comes to reducing the carbon footprint in the atmosphere, and therefore, more people
are set to benefit from such technologies.
Australia employs the environmental sustainability policy in the management of pollution and
climate control. The policy covers issues related to energy use, supplier material use, water wastage,
greenhouse emissions, and other wastes. The policy has ensured accountability among businesses as
well as the government. Over the years, pollution has also reduced tremendously since businesses are
striving to ensure their operations are sustainable and have little to no negative impact on the
environment. In addition, the government works in line with businesses to ensure effectiveness and
efficiency when it comes to controlling the climate and pollution. For instance, the government offers

incentives to businesses in order to assist them in adopting green solutions fully hence refining their
operations for their benefit and the environment.
