Exploring Growth & Development in Heritage and Cultural Industry

1.1 Analyse the growth and development of the heritage and cultural industry
18th century- In earlier time, the cultural tourism is the main
attraction but later on with passage of time, the tourism came
into the culture. This was also the phase of industrial revolution.
In this phase many sites were designed and build for tourist
attraction. 18th century was the time of major development in
matter of heritage and cultural sites. Almost all the famous
attractions were constructed in this phase. The organisations
highly depends on these constructions.
19th century- Although, there were many developments took place in
the earlier years but the wars in mid-century were come as nightmare
for the heritage and cultural industries. These wars had impacted
many famous monuments. Many famous sites were completely
destroyed in this phase. Also, the tourists’ numbers were fallen in that
time. But in late years of this century, these heritage sites were
renovated in more attractive manner
20th Century- In this phase, the heritage organisations faced rise in
their business. This was the time when more than 40% people were
visiting UK for the heritage and culture. There was a sudden increment
of 2.8% as compare to the previous years. This was the era of heritage
and cultural industries. The GDP of the UK also increased in this phase.
Also, these organisation accounts for more than 43% revenue for
construction industries. Development of heritage and cultural industries
of UK can be best explained by the example of Winchester city
museum, which celebrated its century in year 2003. This Roman Tower
was build 900 years ago.
Recent time- According to the recent reports of tourism, it was evaluated that
around 80% visitors that come to UK for visiting the historic monuments. The
development of these industries can be determined by using the data of the places
that were visited by the tourist. According to these data, 10% visits theatre opera,
11% visited the sports activities whereas 23% people choose museums.
Cultural heritage is not only limited to the
material objects but it also involves immaterial
elements such as traditions, history, arts, social
practices, etc. The growth and development of
the heritage and cultural industry can be
evaluated using different timescales. For
analyse of growth, range of these industries in
different centuries and decades is explained.
With the passage of the time, these
organisations are gaining more importance and
business value. These entities are came under
the major interest after the 16th century when
Grand Tour was introduced. In context to UK,
these industries are considered as overall
lifeline for the tourism sector and this growth is
tremendously increasing
