2SOCIOLOGY
There are many changes and transitions that take place in the lives of all the individuals
when they travel from their youth to older age. Grumpy Old Men is a movie set in the year 1993
that mainly talks about the different ways in which there is a kind of attraction that grows
between the older and the young people. As per the opinion of Hernandez and Gonzalez (2008),
older people are the assets of the society and they must always guide the younger ones in the
right direction. However there has been a sharp contrast to this as projected in the film
(Hernandez & Gonzalez, 2008). This is mainly because of the fact that the film shows a kind of
sheer sexual attraction that develops when men go into their older age.
Though they grow old but they always have a kind of attraction towards the ones who are
much younger to them in age. However this attraction is also taking pace because women always
have more to offer and men always have more attraction. This is relevant of the idea that even in
their older age men will always like to get the company of a girl that is younger to them in age
(Ayalon & Koren 2015).
The film shows that men in their old age will always be getting attracted
towards women only when they are younger in age. However this is not the case in reality. In
society there are several good and understanding relations between an older man and younger
women. This can be that of a father and daughter, granddaughter and grandfather or even a
professor and a female student. Therefore it can be said that there are many stereotypes that
actually have been used in this film. It is evident from the lecture materials that proper clinical or
medical aid and care is to be given to all the men when they are stepping into their older age.
This is also an important fact to note that not all old men have to be grumpy.

However some old men get grumpy not because they want to show off their
mood or their irritation (Aldwin et al., 2017). However this grumpy nature is instilled with many
older adults because of the physical transformations or the hormonal changes. In other words
these usually take place because of the fact that there are many hormonal changes and also
hormonal imbalances that undergoes within the human body during their adult age (Birditt et al.,
2009). Just like there is menopause in case of females in case of males there are also several
hormonal imbalances. However this can be clinically considered as one of the major reasons that
lie behind the growing grumpy nature of the adults.
Companionship in the film has a sexual undertone and is talking about the
physical attractiveness. However in later loves men and women both look for a supportive
partner and it is much different than the online dating relationships. It is because of this reason
that are viewers must be able to see beyond the stereotypes and also get the proper clinical and
scientific explanations behind them.
