INTRODUCTION
The entire report will explain about the various organisational structure and behaviour of
individual with concern with the organisation. The report is based on the study of Glaxo Smith
Kline plc (GLK) which is a health care company and is engaged in various discoveries and
development of the pharmaceutical products. It will also explain about the various hierarchical
functions also about the various organisations culture and behaviours. The report will give you a
brief insight about how the GSK works and about its structure. Various comparisons will be
made to make the understanding much clear.

1.1 Organisation structure of GSK
GSK
GSK started its operation on 1ST January as every organisation have different organisation
structure as they work in different working environment and they have different set of standards ,
different goals, ethics, culture, value and objective which they look after to attain them. The
organisation structure of Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK) focuses more upon the three basic strategies
which is their major priority that aims to increase the overall growth and focus on removing the
risk factors from the organisation. Also its major concern is regarding improvement in the
financial performance e of the company.
Mission of company – To work more, to make the organisation and others feel better, to sustain
in the market for the longer period of time. Their major priority is to develop their business
globally by expanding it all around the world and get reorganisation and appreciation for the
same. The company researches and develops a broad range into three categories which are
pharmaceuticals, vaccines, consumer healthcare. The goal of GSK is to be the world leader in
pharmaceutical industry.

Culture in every organisation has a large number of great m momentums which can
become very difficult GSK to adopt the change as in a large organisation there is a
dynamic culture and structure due to which easily making changes in the organisation
could become a big deal for GSK.

GSK is a multinational company with 99000 employees worldwide so the company
structure of this kind of company cannot be set up easily.
Also, before understanding the organisational structure, organisational culture it requires
lot of efforts and some insight into what c creates the term culture and how those factors
are impacting to the organisation like GSK. And also to know hoe the cultural
development would be done to bridge the gap which has been created by various cultures.
Also the culture plays a vital role through which it will also affect the mission and vision
of the GSK, the control system of GSK, the power hierarchies, the routine work or the
regular work and also the internal stories and myths.
If the communication structure within the organisation would not be satisfying or not
affecting it will impact on the GSK organisation.
The work won’t be delegated properly as if the organisation structure will not be clearly
determined by the people involved in the GSK it will become an issue for them to assign
the work properly.
Another major impact would be in assigning the right work to the right person , if the
hierarchy chain or level will not be identified it will become tough for the delegators to
delegate the job to the right person at right time which may affect the working of the
GSK.
1.3 individual behaviour influences by various factors
The individual behaviour is studied by various factors which plays a vital role in affecting the
behaviour individual in an organisation. As every individual carries different behaviour which
are defined through various factors which are-
Psychological factor – Let us understand the high effect of psychological behaviour on
individual.
1. Motivation- Motivation is one of the important concepts which define the individual
behaviour in organisation as the term motivation means influencing and encouraging
others in a positive manner to work. So if the employee is timely motivated to work he
will always try to put his maximum efforts and try to present his work in the best possible

manner. But similarly if the employees will not be motivated he won’t be able to perform
in the best possible way and it will create hindrance for him to achieve the goals for the
organisation.
Perception- Perception tells us about the individual thoughts and choices which also
comes under the category of psychological factor. Also how an individual thinks about
different things in different manner.
Environment factors- Under this the individuals are affected by the working conditions,
the structure of the organisation, the sitting arrangement, improper ventilation facility etc
affect the individual behaviour of working into the organisations.
Dynamic factors- The term dynamic refer as the change. Hence changes in organisation
do affect the Woking of the individuals as it takes time for them to adopt the change
which has been made into the organisation. The change could be into the pattern of
working, new techniques, machinery etc. Being a human being it is not so easy for him to
adopt the change easily.

2.1 leadership styles at GSK and Lloyds
There are various leadership styles and the companies adopt it according to their working
environment and necessity of the organisation. Leadership gives a lead or we can say guidance to
our work and motivate the individuals to work more effectively for the organisation. The various
types of leadership’s styles which are adopted by the GSK and Lloyds are explained below.
Autocratic leadership- This leadership gives the entire authority and right to the leader to take
the entire decisions and he is the only boss of the group. This type of leadership is adopted by the
companies only when the employees or the team members have no knowledge regarding the
subject matter and so the leader only takes the corrective actions for the entire team on his own
with his understanding. He does not give the or take the opinions of the other members of the
team.

Democratic leadership – This leadership explains that the decisions are taken with the mutual
understanding of both the leader and to the team members of the organisation. This relationship
is also explains as democratic where the members choose their leader with their own choices and
votes. This type of leadership style is adopted by the company only when the team members are
understandable and have the knowledge regarding the subject matter.
Laissez faire – This leadership explains that the team members themselves do and perform the
entire work without the concern of the leader. And all the decisions are taken by the members
themselves only. Such type of leadership is adopted by the companies when the leader has the
complete knowledge and skills regarding the specific subject matter.
2.2 Management practices at GSK
Different organisations adopt different types of management practices according to their
organisational environment. There are various management practice which are adopted by GSK
are mentioned below for the better understanding.
Provide support to employees when it is genuinely needed –It is very important to
support the employees who are working day and night for your organisation. GSK keeps
its major focus upon giving employees the emotional support also provide flexible
support for a reasonable life style they can adopt by being in the organisation like GSK.
Design incentives for the employees working at all the level of the organization- The
company focuses on providing a valuable incentives to those working at superior level
but not only that they also does the same for the employees working at the lower level in
the organisation. Because GSK understand that the employees will only be committed to
their work when their needs and values are satisfied. And also is the sole responsibility of
the GSK to provide the same.
Provide feedback to the employees on the regular bases in a constructive manner-
Feedback is the foundation of the growth and motivation of the employees. The GSK
provides the regular feedback to their employees which encourage them to work in a
constructive manner and it also re moves the risk of discouragement. And they not
always focus on the positive feedback but communicate with the employees in case they

Autocratic leadership – Under this the entire decisions are taken by the
leader himself who is full of skills and knowledge and delegates wok to his
team which helps in mobilizing employees towards a vision which is a kind
of positive motivation for the employees.

Affiliative leadership – This type of leadership focuses on the correlation
between the employees and creating the positive working environment for
them so that work in the more efficient manner. Such type of leadership
motivates employees by creating emotional bonds among them and also by
creating harmony.
Coaching leadership – It teaches the employees about how to correlate in
the positive working climate with the organisation and with other people in
the organisation also, enhances their inner potential by the same which
motivates the employees and develops them for the coming future.
Pacesetting leadership under which the employee gets motivated
entirely and is expected to perform excellent and become self directing
person.
Coercive leadership – Such type of leadership focuses upon the positive
working environment of the employee which motivates them to demand
immediate compliance and reach at the best set standards of the
organisation.
There are various types of leadership and all of them is adopted by various
organisation with respect to their working climate and environment. All the
leadership styles help in motivating the employees to work effectively and more

Maslow’s hierarchy need theory
Physiological needs – This needs says that the person’s first priority is to
fulfil his basic needs which includes shelter, water, food and cloth and if
he is motivated by these needs only then he shifts towards the other needs.
Safety needs- His second priority is to fulfil his safety needs that is
freedom from war, violence, etc. If he is not mentally fine he won’t be
able to attain his other needs.
Belongingness- This is one of the important need of every individual
named belongingness where the person look after for family, love,
affection, care, friends etc . And when he gets satisfied with the need only

Esteem needs- This is the last second need as described by the Maslow he

the hygiene factors like healthy working conditions, pay, and other
benefits related to health, health insurance etc.
Motivation-He states that missing of this factor does not create
dissatisfaction but it fails in motivating employees if missing.
3.3 Benefits and limitations of motivational theory at GSK
Benefits of Maslow need hierarchy theory-
The Maslow need hierarchy theory provides a useful insight about the
human needs and priorities in attaining them.
This also helps in knowing the individual behaviour which will help GSK
in designing the products and designing them according to the needs of the
consumer.
Knowing the actual needs of the customer will help GSK in increasing the
productivity as well the profit of the company.
Understanding the needs of the individual also let us know about what
they prefer and what they don’t which may let GSK to understand the

Limitations –

4.1 Nature of groups and group behaviour at GSK
Group is nothing but a form in which two or more than two people work together for
the common end and to achieve the same mission of the organisation. They come
together with different ideas an views and have the ability to solve the prevailing or
coming problem. The advantage of group is that they come all together and every
individual of the group is liable for all the benefits and losses in the group. They
exchange entire information with every member of the group and put their complete
efforts to achieve the success into the organisation. Groups are usually divided into two
categories that is formal group and informal group where the formal group is created by
the legal authorities in the organisation and they work according to the define chain or by
the hierarchical levels defined by the organisations. Even the communication between the
people into the formal group is done through the assigned communication sources or
defined channels. Whereas the informal group is created by the employees themselves

the team and its effective performance into the organisation. It is important to
maintain a good way of communication between the employees, group members.
Employers of the organisation should encourage open communication into the
team so that every team member can suggest his idea , views or suggestions if
any, every employee must feel free to communicate the various information he
collects any may share the same with his entire group. Also managers should hold
regular meeting to know about the group and can offer training if it may require.
If the group member will not communicate with each other they won’t be able to
understand the perception of each other and may also create conflicts within the
group. Not communicating also raise the misunderstanding into the group and
increases disputes
Compensation – Another factor which influences an effective team work when
the employees know what they will be compensated by if they will perform well
for the team and for the organisation. So e very organisation must first come up
with the compensation plan for the team members so that they get motivated and

to employees can remove the hindrance or the barriers in the organizations and
avoid conflicts.
4.3 impact of technology on team functioning
The impact of new technologies can improve or sometimes becomes a barrier for better team
functioning in the organisation. Whenever the technology changes the team members must be
updated. If we talk about e-mails, it gives the facility for the person to be anywhere and get
connected within anyone they want to and even they don’t need to be there to receive the mail. It
automatically gets into the inbox hand the person can go through it never he gets free. But at the
other hand there is also a disadvantages of emails is that it becomes very complex o mange the
mails and anyone can misuse it as well. Also we have another latest technology like mobile
phones which one can carry in their pockets and communicates to anyone they want at anytime
and being anywhere in the world. We can pass any type o information through mobile phone but
sometimes always accessing upon them becomes hindrance for the team functioning. Its help the
team to easily announce the meetings, collaborate, delegate all with easy access over them.
