The Pirate’s Code
Over the small mountain in the beautiful village of Mushberra, a wonderful fishing town which
looked almost like a painting. Lush green valleys across the beach and translucent water gleamed
like glitter under the reflection of the sun. It was one of those places where sunsets and even
moonlight looked beautiful at all times. Hamal, a 17-year-old girl from the village, is often
known for her bold opinions across the small village and her unusually big eyes looked out of the
window towards the sun that was about to set. Hamal had an androgynous looking face which
matched with her fierce personality and bold behaviour. Her conventionally short hair were still
long enough to flow through the air and cover her entire face. Hamal was used to wear
tomboyish clothing because it helped her move quickly and sprint to the entire town. She
believed that practicality takes precedent over aesthetic and beauty. Therefore, it is only logical
to opt for more masculine clothing as it supported practical and hassle free movement. Hamal
liked to play at the beach as a young girl with her father and the beach had become a sacred and
peaceful place for her because it reminded Hamal of a time before the invasion of the pirates in
her small and insignificant village life.
She longed for her simple and trouble free life as a kid where everything was monotonous yet
safe and her family cherished every movement that the small coastal village had to offer. Hamal
was given freedom by her family to make her own decisions of what she wants to become when
he grew up. This type of freedom along with the values of hard work instilled by her parents
shaped Hamal’s personality. She believed in independence and being able to protect one’s own
family and wealth from external threats. Hamal made life decisions in order to protect her family
from any external threats including the threat of pirates. As she grew up she learned the harsh
realities of life and understood the tough and unfair nature of life. All of these environmental
factors made her even more fierce and determined towards becoming capable of rotecting herself
and her family.

Her room looked nothing like something that one would expect a girl's room to be. Untidy,
unkept, and looking more off like a place where her brother would have loved to stay. But rather
than that, he preferred to keep his room cleaner than anything. Hammel always wondered how he
was able to keep his room so clean at all times. With many unusual things in her room, hanging
over the walls like the hook that she found once around the beach, and thought of it to be the
hands or legs of a pirate passing by as well as the small seashells that she liked keeping around
her room because she loved the smell of the sea. Everything looked well good enough with the
small ship that was kept on the table right next to her door. Its details were exquisite and all the
most difficult to contemplate how a young girl living in this dirty room would have gotten her
hand over this. But it was not her who got it herself, but her father on the last trip that they made
out of town before he lost his ability to walk again.
They used to spend hours on the beach running around and playing. It was a trauma for her
father that he was never able to get out of yet for the people in the village it was something more
of a normal occurrence. The village often had visitors from the sea, pirates assured to kill at least
2 people before leaving the village with a new supply of the stool from the villagers. Hmal now
longed for the mental peace that had gone because of the attacks of the pirates. One day as her
father was about to close off his shop of biscuits, a group of pirates came and asked him to give
them some. But as it was evening, he had no biscuits, and requested them to wait for a while
before he could bake some for them. In about an hour, Hamal and the family got to know about
her father, unconscious in the shop with only one leg. It not only changed him but also their
relationship forever. That was the very day when she decided to change the fate of her family
and this village. Hamal’s aim in life was to protect her family from the threat of the pirates and
ensure that the harm caused by the pirates on her father was not done to any other civilized
member of the village.
In the past year, Hamal has constantly practiced the art of fighting and using weaponry without
letting anyone know where she goes every night after they all sleep. Her daily routine for the

past year had been to help her family in daily chores during the day and sneak to the west shore
of the beach to learn fighting from the retired soldiers who lived in the area. These soldiers were
considered an outcast because they were left here by long lost wars. They were not invited back
to their homeland because they conducted mutiny against their general and they were of no use
in this town because of their disfigured physical state. Despite being an outcast from the society,
the former soldiers proved to be a boon for Hamal as they taught her to become a better fighter.
Even though she was banned from going to the west shore of the village because it was also
filled with uncivilized elements along with the former soldiers band. Despite this Hamal
regularly went to learn fighting and improve her strength so that one day she could face the
monsters who terrorized her village, handicapped her father and changed the lives of her family
forever. Tonight was no exception, as she sneaked again out of her house through the window to
go meet her friend Shaila. One of her oldest friends, yet someone who despised violence, yet this
particular idea of learning combat became so important to her as well over the past one year that
together these 2 learned every possible move of attack someone. The reason why Shaila was
learning how to combat was through the incident that she feels similarly with a pirate who tried
to hold her hand twice before attacking her, where she nearly escaped her life by attacking him
with a jug full of alcohol.
The life that people in the village lived was somehow completely twisted around this fear of
being attacked by pirates at any moment. Being a pirate in those days was considered one of the
best ways to become rich faster. Every other clan of pirates came to the village late at night on
the 3rd day of the week to collect supplies. On the very same day, while practicing with her
friend Hamal asked Shaila her opinion as to how far off they had gone in their training. Before
she could say anything, they heard a loud thumping voice from the street. Instead of doing
anything, both of them were hiding under the table to save themselves from being found or
discovered by any of the pirates. While sitting under the table and talking, they saw one pirate
coming inside the room to have a look. What made her remember this pirate more clearly was

the fact that he had a huge tattoo on his foot. For a minute both of them were skilled enough to
realize that he was the very man who took away her father's leg. Rage, anger, the frustration of
being able to do something lingered in her mind for a longer period, but while looking at her
friend's eyes she knew what she wanted to say to her." Don't be stupid." Hamal gently ignored
her pleas and swiftly came out of the table to attack him.
The pirate who remained shocked for a few moments started laughing after realizing the fact that
he was fighting with a young girl. This sense of disturbance or this sense of overconfidence took
over him to a point where he stumbled, and within a moment's length of confidence, she was able
to attack him. She was able to attack the pirate fiercely and knocked him unconscious. Hamal
gained the opportunity to take the pistol of the pirate away from him which was a new weapon
she was not used to before. She could hear the noises of the people screaming outside of the
place crying for help, with all the unjust being defaced through the hands of the pirates. With no
second thought, she took the pistol and ran out of the hidden place into the streets, aimed her first
shot at a pirate. Before she could even kill him, just as the Pirate saw the pistol in her hand, he
quickly dropped to his knees and apologized. "Sorry Captain".
Hamal felt anxious and terrified seeing that she had successfully attacked the pirate who
killed her father and defeated him. She could not believe what had happened, that she had the
opportunity to avenge her father and take the revenge of thousands of individuals who faced
injustice at the hands of the pirates attacking the village . The pirate crew revealed to Hamal that
the pistol she had taken away from the tattooed pirate she had fought previously was the leader
of the crew and the pistol that was currently in the hands of Hamal was not a normal pistol used
by the barbarian group to slaughter and rampage village s. The pistol of leader pirate symbolized
the unity of the group and whoever held the pistol had full control over the group and was the
leader of the crew. Hamal was processing this information laid in front of her hand only
tightening her grasp on the pistol as she realized that the pistol will be very important to her if
she wants take revenge against the group and get rid of the pirates for good of the village. As

Hamal was busy processing the chain of events which felt like a single moment, one of the pirate
crew member shouted “She is a woman, she isn’t a pirate Kill Her!!!’. Hamal recollected herself
and prepared to fight with anyone who dares to come closer.
In between sudden escalation of the situation, Shaila came between Hamal and the angry
pirate crew to speak about the pirate code. She said that if the pistol symbolizes unity and
leadership according to the pirate code than it is important for the pirates to adhere to the code
because it is the only thing keeping them unified to complete their lawless activities. Shaila
announced with authority that if the pirates start breaking the code, there will be nothing
stopping lawlessness entering their daily lives at sea and looting mission across villages. She said
that they should not let a woman trigger a state of lawlessness in their pirate crew. There was a
moment of silence which was broken by the eldest of the former soldiers who trained Shaila and
Hamal. The soldier announced that during his years in war, he had learned that following and
obeying by the rules and regulations is what keeps a team together and combines. He said that
“This is true specifically in the situations of crises situations as code of honour is the only thing
which helps individuals unify together and keep away sense of lawlessness.” The words spoken
by the solider resonated with the pirate group he continued “But it is unfortunately true that the
pistol is in the hands of a girl, the last resorts that the brave men of this crew have is to challenge
the current leader in a duel and take away the leadership of crew fair and square”.
This statement by the soldier started loud whispering between the group, a bald man
came forward “I challenge you to a duel girl, fight to secure your leadership”. The man was
disfigured with a missing eye covered by an eye patch, broken nose and a giant scare reaching
his chin from his collarbones. Shaila took Hamal aside and told her that this was the man who
had assaulted her years ago. Hamal replied that it is intended by gods that she finishes off each
single one of these monsters and avenges the mournful families whose life had been shattered
because of their criminal acts. Shaila tried to reason with Hamal that she should not think
impulsively and let the anger and revenge drive her actions. Shaila said that there can be other

logical ways of dealing with this situation instead of choosing violence so that the pirate band is
forever cast away from our village. Hamal gave Shaila reassurance” Don’t worry I have been
training for this movement exactly, each one of these vile creatures will pay for their sins today.”
Hamal rushed off to face the first duel of her life with an old ragged pirate.
The beach was clear and the two opponents stood five feet apart from each other
surrounded by crowd of outcasts, criminals, villagers and children. Hamal was nervous because
she did not have such experience with pistol before, but she knew she was fast her quick reflexes
had always helped her. She was able to use these reflexes to run away from trouble as a child,
while playing with her family on this very beach and it was these reflexes that had helped her
learn to fight. She extended her finger towards the trigger when suddenly the sound of a wailing
woman echoed through the beach, it was her mother. It was at this movement the pirate fired
shot near Hamal’s feet, which made her fall. The pirate came running for the pistol but Hamal
was still holding the pistol. Hamal looked around and her mother was also coming to her. She
said that someone had told her that Hamal was dead on the beach and hearing this news she cam
crying here. The pirate reached to Hamal demanded the pistol back as he had won the duel,
Hamal called him a cheat and asked “How does it feel to cheat against a little girl, you must be
pretty desperate?”. He kicked Hamal and forcefully took the Pistol away from her. The pirate
band started cheering in his favour and Hamal felt hopeless watching all this happen defeated on
the ground. This is because after all the trouble, the pirate band will aim to take revenge from the
village and will loot the entire village worse than any of their previous reasons. She also felt
guilty that she is the sole reason the village will suffer this fate.
Shaila grabbed Hamal as the crowd began to disperse and pirates started declaring victory of
their new leader. Hamal was taken to the west shore caves where the ex-soldiers helped her get
sense of the situation. She had known about the cave in the west shore before but was never
invited there by the soldiers during her training days. She also did not have an idea about the
enormous space of the cave. Hamal was resting in secluded corner of the cave when Shaila came

to tell her that the soldiers and some villagers have united together to end the terror of pirates and
want her to be the leader. Hamal responded that there is no hope now and a small group of
outcasts will not be able to outperform those savages with lethal weapons and more experience
in killing. She said that we should all abandon the region in hopes of finding refugee in nearby
island kingdoms. Shaila was shocked to learn about the pessimist view of Hamal after single
defeat. She said that Hamal needs participate in this resistance struggle because even in the years
without hope she was the one determined to free the village from terror of the pirates and besides
no on knows the secrets of the village better than these two untamed girls.
Hamal was encouraged by this and the team planned on attacking the village gathering place at
night to face the pirates. At night Hamal and other members reached the village gathering place
which was just an open area with some wooden columns, make shift wooden doors and shading
to hold any village meetings. They covered anything flammable with oil and alcohol. Villagers
in nearby houses had already left and fire could be easily controlled once the pirates are dead as
it is wide open area with less vegetation. The fire was lit and the pirates got up to run way for
their life but were quickly surrounded by flames on all sides. Hamal guided the team to get water
from the beach cover the western side of the area so that the fire does not spread deeper into the
village. She then went along with soldiers to find and finish off any pirates running away. One
by one they captured several drunk and burning pirates. As they were passing through field with
heavy vegetation, someone grabbed Hamal’s hair and pulled her back. She attacked back from
her elbow to lessen the grip of the attacker and cut of her hair to break free. Hamal turned
around and saw the same pirate in front of her he was pointing pistol directly to her head. She
was filled with rage as the pirate challenged her the fight one on one without help from her
friends. Hamal agreed and asked him to give her Pistol so the duel can start. As soon as the pirate
looked away Hamal whistled loudly in specific cod so that others can come to her rescue. She
then kicked the pirate and starting running forwards. Unfortunately the pirate grabbed her by the
feet and she fell face first on the ground. Shaila arrived suddenly and kicked the pirate in the

face, beating him with a pitch fork violently. Hamal asked her to stop and wait for others so that
the pirate could be captured and not murdered. A villager arrived at the place when Hamal pulled
Shaila away and tool the pitchfork from her Hamal asked the villager to tie up the pirate and
keep him locked up with others. Hamal hugger her friend and told her that if she would have
killed the pirate today, the guilt of murder would have eaten her up and stopped her from
enjoying the peace of the village they struggled to introduced. As dawn broke and the fields of
the small coastal village were filled with hope of new future Hamal embraced her crying friend
Shaila and looked at the rising sun. At this movement she forgot about revenge and just watched
the tranquil scene which she had longed since childhood.
