1SOCIOLOGY
Part 1c- Summary to the class:
To start work on the project, my first objective was to find a social issue which is very
prevalent and has serious impact on the life victims. The focus was to take a issue that explains
gendered experience related to a phenomenon. With this perspective, sexual abuse has been
taken as the background issue and I started with identifying all hashhtag campaigns that focussed
on the issue of sexual abuse. The setbacks I faced was that therewre numerous types of hashtag
campaigns against sexual abuse and choosing the one with a strong impact was a challenging
task.
The three hashtag campaigns critiques the issue of sexual abuse and rape culture in the
societies. All the three campaigns have used social media tool to establish connection with public
and get idea about variety of incidence of sexual abuse in the world. For example, #MeToo and
#NotOkay focused on collecting accounts of women regarding sexual harassment and
#HowIWillChange targeted males as it challenged traditional gender norms and encourage men
to give suggestion to end the rape culture. Such campaigns are effective in creating a common
platform for people who are experiencing same social issue and empower them (O'Neil et al.,
2018). The issue that has been taken up in each of these three campaigns are relevant to the
overall course of race and cultural identify as it reveals the truth of rape culture and how large
number of women are vulnerable in current society. The power of these campaigns is also
understood from the fact they have a wider reach as they are trying to directly connect with the
victim and find out the types of support required by them (Mathews & Collin-Vézina, 2016).
