AI Summary
This report presents a formal hazard assessment conducted for Sundown Transport Ltd, a transportation company. The assessment begins by listing various occupations within the company and then selects three key jobs: mailroom clerk, warehouse attendant, and delivery vehicle driver. For each selected job, the report details specific tasks using the PEMEP framework (People, Equipment, Materials, Environment, and Procedures), identifies associated hazards, and analyzes the risks involved. The mailroom clerk role is identified as the most hazardous due to the potential for physical and psychosocial hazards. Risk analysis is performed by calculating the degree of risk based on frequency of exposure, probability of incident, and severity of injury. The report also outlines pre-contact control measures, including engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls to mitigate the identified risks. The conclusion emphasizes the importance of effective risk analysis and control implementation, recommending regular employee feedback and continuous monitoring to enhance workplace safety. The report uses the provided assignment brief as a model, addressing injury and illness hazards only.

Selected job: Mailroom clerk
Reason: This job role is associated with the most of the hazards as it can affect the
physical and psychological condition of the concerned person. Lack of knowledge regarding
the right posture of using trolley may cause injury to back, neck and shoulder. On the other
hand, employees of this job need to work with machines like computers and fax machines.
Damages in machines may cause psychological hazards to the concerned person. In the
below-mentioned table, PEMEP related to each task under this occupation, related hazards,
potential risks and control measures are being mentioned.

of goods.
It requires the concerned to
load and unload the trolley of
mails by using physical forces.
Regular metal trolley is used in
this task. If a person follows
this process on a regular basis,
it may cause shoulder, back and

Table: Identification of hazards, Analysis of risks and pre-contact controls to reduce the
risks of each hazard
(Source: created by the Author)
V- Risk analysis
Risk analysis is being measured by estimating the degree of risks. For calculating the
degree of risk, it is required to determine the frequency of being exposed to the hazards by
the concerned employee, the probability of occurrence of risky incident and the severity of
the consequence of the risk. Based on this determination the degree of risk can be calculated.
Degree of risk (DOR) = frequency of exposure x probability of harmful incident x
severity of the incident
Based on this value, the class of hazard can be determined. For this case, the DOR of
loading and unloading trolley is 48. It is denoting that high risk is associated with this task.
On the other hand, the DOR of sorting faxes and mail is 18, which is postulating that medium
level of risk is associated with this task. This study has found that the DOR of entering data is
24. It means that medium level of risk is associated with hazards of this task.
VI- Pre-contact method of controlling hazards
There are three levels of controls in the hierarchy of controls, which includes pre-
contact method of control, point of contact control and post-contact control. Addressing the
issues before the occurrence of the hazard is beneficial because it prevents the damage.
Hence, in this part, the pre-contact method of control is demonstrated. Different pre contact
control can be implemented to eliminate the high degree risk of loading and unloading. This
includes purchasing user friendly trolleys, which is an engineering control. On the other hand,
training to employees can be given to help them to acquire new skills of performing the task.
This is categorized as administrative control. PPE control can be achieved by wearing gloves
by the mailroom clerk. Engineering control of the other two tasks involves purchasing new

hardware and software. This can help to provide support to workers and prevent the risk of
sudden increase in workload that acts as a stress factor for them.
3. Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that effective implementation of
control can be done through proper analysis of risks. The tasks of a mailroom clerk are most
hazardous with risk of physical and psychosocial hazards. Among the tasks, loading and
unloading of goods is most hazardous with a high degree of risk. Effective implementation of
pre contact control and regular monitoring of equipment and processes can help to eliminate
the threat gradually. However, it can be recommended that regular collection of feedback
from employees is essential to identify risks. Effective steps can be taken by analyzing those
feedbacks.
