1. Introduction
Workplace hazard can be considered as any aspect of work, which causes impact on
health and safety. These hazards are present in the workplace and related to the environment,
equipment or people. Proper management and regular maintenance of workplace procedures
and equipment can help to avoid some risks or hazards that impact on employee performance.
Different job positions have various hazards that impact employees. In this report, workplace
hazard of an organization is evaluated that has helped to device control measures. Risk
calculation is done to analyze the degree of risk and hazards are identified according to
PEMEP of the specific task.
2. Discussion
Selected organization: Sundown transport ltd is based in Canada. This transportation
firm provides honest and reliable service to their customers in Canada, USA, Mexico and
worldwide. They have recruited many employees who perform different jobs for
accomplishing various operations.

The chosen company is running their business successfully with the help of their
employees. However, it is essential for this company to assess hazards related to each
operating area of their business for sustaining loyal and dedicated workforce. Here are
different occupations in this organization that are mentioned below,

Task description using PEMEP: Loading trolley with packages during delivery is a task,
which is essential. Again these clerks have to unload the trolley in the mail room while
receiving orders in the warehouse.
Task 2: Sorting mail and faxes
Task description using PEMEP: Different packages of mail in the warehouse are sorted
properly through scanners and mail sorting machines according to delivery location that
involves picking up the packages and placing them at the right bin.
Task 3: Entering data computer
Task description using PEMEP: Clerks of warehouse and mailroom have to enter data of

different mails properly in a computer. Maintenance of data is essential for the record
keeping process.

V- Risk analysis
Risk analysis is being measured by estimating the degree of risks. For calculating the
degree of risk, it is required to determine the frequency of being exposed to the hazards by
the concerned employee, the probability of occurrence of risky incident and the severity of
the consequence of the risk. Based on this determination the degree of risk can be calculated.
Degree of risk (DOR) = frequency of exposure x probability of harmful incident x
severity of the incident
Based on this value, the class of hazard can be determined. For this case, the DOR of
loading and unloading trolley is 48. It is denoting that high risk is associated with this task.
On the other hand, the DOR of sorting faxes and mail is 18, which is postulating that medium
level of risk is associated with this task. This study has found that the DOR of entering data is
24. It means that medium level of risk is associated with hazards of this task.
VI- Pre-contact method of controlling hazards
There are three levels of controls in the hierarchy of controls, which includes pre-
contact method of control, point of contact control and post-contact control. Addressing the
issues before the occurrence of the hazard is beneficial because it prevents the damage.
Hence, in this part, the pre-contact method of control is demonstrated. Different pre contact
control can be implemented to eliminate the high degree risk of loading and unloading. This
includes purchasing user friendly trolleys, which is an engineering control. On the other hand,
training to employees can be given to help them to acquire new skills of performing the task.
This is categorized as administrative control. PPE control can be achieved by wearing gloves
by the mailroom clerk. Engineering control of the other two tasks involves purchasing new

hardware and software. This can help to provide support to workers and prevent the risk of
sudden increase in workload that acts as a stress factor for them.
3. Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that effective implementation of
control can be done through proper analysis of risks. The tasks of a mailroom clerk are most
hazardous with risk of physical and psychosocial hazards. Among the tasks, loading and
unloading of goods is most hazardous with a high degree of risk. Effective implementation of
pre contact control and regular monitoring of equipment and processes can help to eliminate
the threat gradually. However, it can be recommended that regular collection of feedback
from employees is essential to identify risks. Effective steps can be taken by analyzing those
feedbacks.
