1NURSING ASSIGNMENT
The primary role of advanced practitioner nurses is to understand the health
complication of the patients through assessment, diagnosis and treatment of illness and then
provide primary acute and specialty care to the patients. While working with the 17 year old
boy who is suffering from the head injury (scenario 5), my role as an advanced practice nurse
would be very crucial and it has been mentioned below.
The boy is suffering from a head injury while a football match and despite the injury
wishes to play an important game three days after the match. As the patient suffered a head
injury, my primary focus would be conducting an assessment method using the Glasgow
Coma Scale (GCS) so that the adverse effect of his injury could be understood (Nel &
Govender, 2018). However, to understand his concerns and his cognitive abilities, I would
develop effective communication with the patient and his further sports participation could be
evaluated (Ball et al., 2015). I would try to make the patient understand his critical health
condition and would inform his health status so that his ethical rights could be complied with
and he could understand the severity of his health condition. As Krzeczkowski, Robb and
Good (2017) mentioned that the effect of head injury is observed through patient’s ability to
develop constructive sentences and alertness, these factors would be considered while
assessing the boy with head injury. Besides, I would communicate with the parents of the
patient so that I could inform them about the severity of their child’s injury so that they could
make him understand that playing football with such injury could affect his future career as
an athlete (Ball et al., 2015). Therefore, these way I would be responding to the situation.
