ATTITUDE AND BEHAVIOR 2
Attitude and behavior
Having a particular perception either positive, negative, or uncertain towards someone or
something is what refers to attitude. This evaluation can occur in three primary forms; affective,
a component that defines how the subject makes a person feel, behavioral which describes how
attitude affects behavior and thirdly cognitive which describes a person’s thoughts towards an
issue. With such a description, it is thus correct to say that attitude can influence behavior and
learning.
According to the theory of attitude, the relationship between behavior and attitude is
defined by the principle of compatibility. However, for this compatibility to effectively support
the case and enhance learning, there have to be factors referred to as the attitudinal constructs.
These factors include motivation, attitude, interest, perseverance, achievement, and self-esteem.
This combination of attitudinal factors is thus likely to influence behavior and learning
(Kruglanski et al., 2018).
For example, a college student in a dilemma between looking ahead to the completion of
the term paper and meeting friends for a party in one night having in mind the busy school
schedules. The attitudinal factors will influence decision making to such a student. For instance,
if such a student has positive self-esteem towards education, definitely he/she is persevering and
determined to perfume well and thus will choose to spend the night working on the term paper
rather than partying. On the other side, the same student might have a positive attitude towards
both socialization and learning but has reduced interest in education, and thus preference might
be more on choosing to party (Marcinkowski, and Reid, 2019).
In other words, having doubt or negative in one of the attitudinal factors may influence
one’s attitude and decision making at large, making him go for or against learning aspects and
other variables of comparison. Therefore, the compatibility of the attitude and behavior through
attitudinal factors guides in decision making that can enhance or demean learning in general.
