INTRODUCTION
Health and social care sector is the backbone of an economy. It is very necessary for the
comfortableness and happiness of the people. Health is the most essential element of the living
beings. But due to the increasing problems in the living standard, Health of people is going
down. So, It is very crucial for people to determine the changes in health. With the changing
environment, needs of humans are also changing regarding health and social care services. The
taken organisation in this assignment is NHS hospital who is providing health services to the
people of UK. This report will discuss the concept and perceptions of health, disability, illness
and behaviour on changing needs of people. Also the care needs of individuals with specific
needs and the current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs has also been
discussed. This report will also discuss the potential impact of emerging developments,
approaches, intervention strategies which supports the individuals with specific needs. In the
end, various concepts and the potential impact of challenging behaviour on health and social care
organisation along with the strategies to overcome these challenges which are associated with the
needs of people.
TASK 1
1.1: Concepts of health, disability, illness and behaviour in relation to users of health and social
care services
There are various concepts and terms associated with the health and social care sector.
These concepts must be clear to the services provider and to the workers of the organisation for
performing their role and duties in a proper way. The perceptions and misunderstandings
regarding the health, disability, illness, and behaviour can restrict the organisation in achieving
their set objectives and goals. Health is the mental and physical condition of individuals or
people. World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as the good state of mental, physical
and social well being without any disease or problems in body (Archer and et. al., 2011). It
indicates that the people are having a good feeling when they are healthy because of no disease
or problems. People generally thinks that health means no problems or disease in human body,
that's why people in such condition referred as the healthy people. Disability refers to the
physical or mental impairments of an individual which restricts them to take full or equal
participation in the activities of the society. Thus , it is not a health issue rather it is a complex

process which reflects the interaction between a individual's body and features of the society in
which they lives. Overcoming these issues or difficulties which is faced by disabled people needs
interventions from society and government to eliminating these barriers of society. Illness is the
personal condition of individuals or people which varies upon the personal emotions and
perceptions. But, the illness is must for diagnosing the problems and disease which arose in the
body (Aveyard, 2014). Illness behaviour refers to the manner in which the individuals monitor
their body's condition and take necessary precaution using health care services for eliminating
the sickness or disease.
1.2: Assessment of how perceptions of specific needs have changed over time
The modern world is changing rapidly in this 21st century due to the various technological
advancements for the ease of people. The belief, feelings and requirements of the people are also
changing continuously according to the trends. The perception of specific needs is also changing
with the time and people with such needs are more vulnerable to the harmful problems such as
poverty, injury, exploitation, abuse etc. than other persons of the society. If these problems are
not considered timely then it may have serious effects on the physical and mental health. The
example of Mr. Holland Park comes under such category. He is suffering from eyes and hearing
problems. Other old age people also faces problems such as heart complexities, digestion and
breathing problems etc. These problems needs to be taken care of properly otherwise these can
have serious outcomes on the health of the peoples. Families of such people are also getting
vigilante regarding these problems and are taking suitable measures using help from health and
social care centres. These people also finds it difficult to communicate their problems to the
others due to age, disability, stigma or fear. They need protection and assistance for
communicating their issues.

There are various impact of legislation, social policy, society and culture on the provided
services of health and social care. These factors effects the health and environment of people
with specific needs in social care services. The legislation of a country make sure that the
services are available to individuals having specific needs. If legislation ensures the
sustainability of health and social care to the people having specific needs, then the services can
be provided easily to the people having specific needs (Coleman and et. al., 2012). The Social

policy of a society is responsible for extending and ensuring that the services are available
conveniently to the users having specific needs. The social policy refers to the social standards,
values etc. which are required in society. The impact of society along with culture can't be
neglected regarding the quality of services available to people with such specific needs. The
culture is required to build the possibilities for dominating services which are provided to the
people with specific needs and wants. Health and Social Care Act, 2012 provides the set of
various rules which needs to be followed by the health organisations and the customers of this
sector. It also provides the guidance and support which should be followed by the industry for
ensuring that the proceedings are equal, fair and smooth for the patients or customers of health
and social care sector. It also helps in providing reforms associated with the employees for
performing better operation management of facilities in the health and social care centre.
National Health Service Act, 2006 states that the funds assigned to the different sectors of
different places are provided under the supervision of the governing authority (Creek and
Lougher, 2011). It is helpful for smooth functioning of health care industry in providing better
services to the end users. Society and culture also plays an essential role in the development of
health and social care sector.

2.1: Analyse the care needs of Mr Holland Park with specific needs
It is very essential to determine the care needs of people for managing and safeguarding
the operations of health care sector. In case of Mr. Holland Park, he is suffering from the
problem of Dementia. In old age, brain and cranial cells of the body of humans started dying
which results into loss of memory or people forgets a lot of things. Proper care should be
provided by the NHS Hospital and their employees for assisting him in doing his regular
activities such as taking meals, bath, medicines etc. on time. Also, he is suffering from eye
disease which is a major concern for him during the night time as he needs things like water or
something else in dark which can leads to an injury. Apart from that, he is also suffering from
other critical issue such as hearing problem. Due to these various problems, Mr. Holland Park is
showing serious change in the behaviour sometimes So, it is very necessary for NHS hospital to
determine the problems of old age people as they are continuously neglected by the family
members due to busy schedules. So, he creates problems for staff in order to bring his problems

forward. Thus, NHS hospital needs to critically analyse the specific needs of Mr. Holland and
provide appropriate solution and treatment according to the needs. Extra and intensive care needs
to be given to such people having specific needs as these types of people are more
underprivileged and suppressed (Drummond and et. al., 2015). So, staff and NHS hospital needs
to be more concerned regarding the needs of such persons and provide necessary physical, social,
emotional support to them. Also staff of NHS hospital must communicate with them regularly
for determining their problems accurately.
2.2: Explain current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs
The people with specific needs needs support for the improvement in themselves and in
the society. The people with specific needs are generally underprivileged to use the common or
equal rights and facilities of the society. Statutory organisations are controlled and regulated by
the government with or without shareholders. These organisations are helpful for providing the
health care services to the Mr. Holland for ensuring his comfortableness in living standard. These
are controlled by the government so their services are available to Mr. Holland easily. These
organisations also follows government rules and policies regarding the care of patients which
results in providing good quality services to Mr. Holland. Voluntary associations are two or more
groups of individuals who comes together in an agreement for achieving a shared goal. These
organisations are ready for any task in order to provide support to the society for the
development. These can help the Mr. Holland for providing the health care services accordingly
to the his demands and specific needs at any place and on right time. Non profit organisations are
generally associations which do not concentrate on making huge profit rather they want to
provide suitable and necessary support to the society for development of the individuals. These
can assist the Mr. Holland in providing the best services and solutions regarding their health
problems due to their will to provide better quality services for the betterment of the society.
Through these organisations, NHS hospital can provide the services to Mr. Holland easily and
with less efforts.
2.3: Evaluate the services available in a chosen locality for individuals with specific needs
It is a known fact that individuals prefers the health care services of a firm who can
provide better facilities and services to the family of individuals in a nearby facility centre. These
close care centres should have proper medical facilities and amenities for quickly assisting the
individuals in their health problems (Thoits, 2011). NHS hospital must come in agreement with

care centres for providing quick services in case of shifting the patients. The taken place for
evaluating the available services is East London. The transportation facilities of this place are
good along with the enough ambulances for handling the clients. The food is also hygienic and
healthy around here. Food items are also provided according to the needs of patients (Glasby,
2017). So, it is beneficial for Mr. Holland Park to shift to this care centre for their own benefits.
This locality has almost every kind of facilities and treatment system. In this area, guidance and
support of health experts are also available for the people with specific needs.

3.1: The approaches and interventions available to support individuals with specific needs
There are various approaches or strategies which have been implemented by hospitals for
caring the individuals as per their needs. Mr. Holland park who has multiple diseases therefore, it
needs more caring. Problematical vision and hearing problem affects his body from a period of
time. Compared to difficulty of insanity and challenges from behaviour in Mr. Holland park,
vision and deaf harm are average. So, it is necessary for NHS staff to gave proper attention on its
problems of challenging behaviour. For this, they can build confidence level in him so that, they
were formulated strategies for overcoming its issues of behaviour. Therefore, NHS staff have to
make some effective plans and policies in order to controlling the dementia. Medical aid of
cognitive was an important strategy for Mr. Holland park because through it they can easily
activate their senses of hearing. In it, various methods were used such as music and sound
systems for activating his nerve cell. It helps in hearing because it is interconnected with the
brain. for Sensory system they can uses small therapy such as different smell-therapy due to
which individual can improve its smell senses (Green and Thorogood, 2018). Doctors of NHS
were provide psychiatric sessions to the patient so that, challenges from behaviour will be
overcome. All above strategies and approaches had done by the staff members of NHS in order
to get improvement in the condition of Mr. Holland park.
3.2 Effectiveness of intervention strategies for an individual with specific needs.
Intervention strategies are defined as a set of activities through which an individual
improves its needs. This is basically aimed at specific weak area which requires improvement.
These strategies are uses in the hospitals for improvement of a specific part that needs
improvement. For Mr. Holland park, it was used for improvement of his vision senses but it was

not used for getting permanent solution of the condition. It gave improvement in the conditions
of vision senses. With the help of this, the vision can not improved perfectly whereas, it provide
the strength to the patient for faces the challenges which were happened due to it. According to
the process there were various diagnosis were conducted by the medical team of NHS in order to
find remedies for its vision senses. Apart from that, various sound systems and music systems
were used for improving its hearing capacity due to which, Mr. Holland park were improves its
hearing senses. For joint pain a proper massage were given on regular basis to the patient. The
reason behind the multiple diseases of Mr. Holland park were the low level of brain cells due to
which, the senses of body were decreased. Individual was following the instructions which were
given by the medical team in order to get improvement in the senses. As per following the result
was come out and it was positive its challenging behaviour was considered by the staff members
and its senses were get improvement therefore, It can be said that Intervention strategies gave
effective result to the Mr. Holland park (Mirowsky, 2017).
3.3 Potential impact of emerging developments on support for individuals
Apart from all the discussions of above there are various developmental activities which
are connected with health and medical care services. This work strictly protecting the patients
who are facing the challenges from their behaviour it should help them in improving their
behaviour so that they can easily spend their livelihood in the society. There are various laws and
regulations which are created by the UK government for the health care such as Mental Health
Act 1983, The disability discrimination Act 1992 and Health and Social care Act 2012. all the
acts and laws of government provide assistance to the individuals for getting best treatments as
per their problems in the whole nation. Services and treatments which are related with their
problems provided them at low charges. There are various organisations who are working for it
such as voluntary organisations donations, charity programmes etc. they are working for
providing support to the individuals who are not able for getting medical services. Mapping the
journey of patient is necessary for providing the opportunities to the organisation in this,
organisation have to provide quality services to the individuals so that, they will gave positive
feedbacks. It also assist to management in removing inefficiency from the organisation in terms
of services. Understanding the errors through analysing the needs of patients management can
easily solve their issues of bottlenecks which will help them in improvement of services.
Healthcare services are easily get improved through it (Mitchell and Golden, 2012). Trust

building is necessary for every organisation to make relations with the individuals in order to
getting profitability. In this, staff of NHS have to measure the specific needs of the patients and
after the measurement it improves the efficiency of staff as they gave better medical services to
the individuals which builds a trust in the patients. It will also help the NHS in conducting
operational activities in effective manner.

4.1: Explain different concepts of challenging behaviour you will face while working in care
homes
Challenging behaviours are common in patients due to their mental and physical
instability in communicating their issues and problems to the family and doctors. Because of
proper education and awareness regarding challenging behaviour, mindset of people is now
changing towards them. People believe that care centres can provide suitable treatment and care
to these challenged behaviour individuals. Such behaviour mostly happens in old age people or
children born with disabilities because of which they feel isolated and alone in the society.
Challenging behaviours is divided into categories such as aggressive behaviour , violent acts,
throwing stuffs towards other people or doing sexual acts in public etc. There are various reasons
due to which the individuals started showing challenging behaviour such as learning disabilities,
physical disabilities, ill health , physical impairment, acquired brain injury, drugs and alcohol
etc. which makes them to feel isolated and alone. Old age people suffers mostly from joints pain
and dementia due to which these individuals depend upon the family and others for doing their
regular activities. Sometimes, people started showing such behaviours due to frustration which
becomes other mental disorder with time. In the case of Mr Holland Park, he also showed violent
and aggressive behaviour while he was admitting to the care centre, But his behaviour becomes
normal after getting the necessary treatment and comfort from NHS hospital. This challenging
behaviour can be cured through analysis and proper treatment along with spending time with
family and friends (Moorhead and et. al., 2013). With proper communication and interaction of
employees of NHS hospital with the patients, effects of such behaviour can be minimised and
reduced.

Dealing with people having challenging behaviour is necessary and tough for NHS
hospital as these people can harm the other patients and to the staff handling them. The
challenging behaviour individuals can become a danger or problem for the other patients too
during the process of socialising with other patients (Reeves and et. al., 2011). These violent acts
can become threats to the fellow patients and as well as for the staff who are working for the
treatment of that individual. These patients can also leads to accidents which will results in bad
reputation of the NHS hospital. So, it is very essential for hospital to treat such patients with
seriousness as any little issues can effect the hospital at large scale. Also, the improvement in the
condition of the these patients can effect positively on the hospital. In the case of Mr. Holland
Park, NHS hospital and their staff provided extensive care and treatment to him for calming him
down and to ensure him that his needs and problems will be handled carefully and the staff will
contribute every possible effort to make him feel good. The potential impact of the challenging
behaviour on the NHS hospital is that by understanding the needs and requirements of these
challenged behaviour patients, Staff can provide necessary care and treatment to them for their
ease and comfort. NHS hospital must needs to be alert and cautious from planning, collaborating
and executing the plan for treating such people. The work which needs to be done must be
analysed and evaluated properly for achieve the desired efficiency and goals.
4.3: Analyse strategies for working with challenging behaviours associated with specific needs in
care homes
It is crucial for the NHS hospital to treat the individuals having challenging behaviour
with extra care. This challenging behaviour is shown by the individuals when they fails to
convey their issues and problems. So, it is necessary to track the cause of this behaviour before
starting the treatment. Patients must understands that if they cooperate then their treatment will
be done smoothly (Riekert, Ockene and Pbert, 2013). Various strategies has been identified by
the experts for dealing with such individuals having challenging behaviour. Management should
need to provide two way communications among the workers and patients so, that the problem
can be handled properly. This will help the patients to discuss their problems and issues easily
with the staff for curing the problem in less time with less efforts. If a individuals is showing
aggressive and violent behaviour, then hospital must separate them from other patients and treat

them safely and separated. The main strategy for keeping up with challenges is the support from
all stakeholders whether it is customer, employee or investors. Management of NHS hospital
must set the target regarding goals, time, deliverables and other activities for handling such
patients(Shea, 2016). Clear communication and interaction within the members and patients also
plays an important role in treating such customers of the hospital. The rewards are provided in a
proper manner for carrying out the operational activities properly.

beings with specific needs had changed with time regarding the health and social care services.

the individuals having specific needs. The current systems and care needs of individuals with

discussed in the context of NHS hospital. Explanation of potential impact, approaches and

report. In the end, the concept of challenging behaviour of individuals has been discussed along
