1HEALTH ISSUES AMONG THE AUSTRALIAN POPULATION
The factors affecting the community health
Torres Strait Islanders are a group of the population of Torres Island living in
Australia. They are basically the original inhabitants of this state, whereas the non-indigenous
people are immigrants who are surviving in this state. The people of Torres Strait Islanders
often engrossed with many issues that affect the way of living. It comprises economic,
political, behavioral, and social issues, which results in the main deterioration in health
among the population. The main differences that give a stimulus between the aboriginal and
non-indigenous population of the state are the act of assimilation, racism, colonization, and
invasion, native habits (Conway, Tsourtos & Lawn, 2017).
There exists a wide range of gaps in health between non-Indigenous Australians and
Indigenous people. The differences subsist in higher mortality rates and shorter life
expectancy. The social issues that affect the main difference are low-income of the
population, political exploitation, and use of substances, sex discernment, racial
discrimination, urbanization, trauma, violence, and lack of knowledge about health,
insufficient physical activities, and well beingness.
Common Diseases that creates inequality
The poor health issues that are faced by the aboriginal population are mainly poor
nutritional conditions, lack of immunization, alcohol usage, mental health problems, cancer,
obesity, and diabetes mellitus. These come under behavioral risk factors among the people
(Australian Government, 2016).
The relation between the factors in terms of health
The social factors help in contributing to a healthy lifestyle among the population; the
aboriginal people lack these factors. It is creating a health hazard among the community due
to improper knowledge about health and well-being.

Discernment and social racism severely affect the mental health of the population as it
causes depression and anxiety.
The government can effectively control the situation by providing regular care among
all the habitats, including free immunization programs, cultural education, and also campaign
programs for closing the gaps.
