The post has explained the need to formulate a policy that would address the needs of the
older citizens. It is true that the elderly consume most of the healthcare. The main reason for this
observation attributed to an increase incidence of comorbidities among this population. Most of
them require prescription drugs to manage their conditions. Many strides have been made in
attempt to address this situation. There has been an improvement in coverage for instance by the
Affordable Care Act 2010, which you was described in the post. Prescription drugs availed,
preventive services as well as annual wellness visits have been implemented (Frean, Gruber &
Sommers, 2017).
However, despite having such an elaborate plan to take care of our senior citizens, a large
percentage cannot afford it. When the services are not affordable, the initial intended reason for
the services offered is not achieved (Osborn et al, 2017). The suggestion to put up universal
healthcare for all the senior citizens is very thoughtful and this will ensure social safety.
Addressing all the healthcare needs of these patients in a more comprehensive manner will raise
their health standards. Sometimes early intervention is crucial averting complications, which
would otherwise require more resources to manage. On a health economics perspective,
prevention is less costly compared to treatment.
It is true that our senior citizens are in desperate need for these services and granting
them will be equivalent to according them dignity as they age. They have previously participated
in activities that contribute to the economy and some are still doing so. Granting them universal
healthcare is a way of appreciating their contribution. It should accorded to them as an inherent
right.
