Introduction
The role of an advanced practicing nurse, demands various responsibilities, without
limiting merely to the disease treatment of the concerned patient. The advanced practicing nurse,
is involved in a variety of essential roles like diagnosis of disease, formulation of prescriptions,
communicating with the patient’s families as well as engaging in recent medical research (Swan
et al., 2015). Hence, the need for the hour is to develop a conceptual framework for nurses
involved in advanced practicing roles, due to their dynamic multidisciplinary functions. The
following paragraphs highlight the conceptual framework of a health promotion model, in
relation to the role of an advanced practicing nurse.
Importance and identification of a conceptual nursing framework
The usage of a conceptual theoretical framework is imperative to the field of nursing.
With the help of a framework, nurses aiming to engage in advanced practicing roles, obtain a
clear idea of the key concepts and theories that they are required to apply practically, from their
curriculum to real life medical settings (Bryant-Lukosius et al., 2016). As opined by the World
Health Organization, the principles of ‘Health Promotion’ is based upon enhancing an
individual’s participation in the control, regulation and improvement of their health, with
associated mediating functioning at societal as well as environmental platforms (Lindström,
2018). Hence, it is of utmost importance to establish a conceptual framework of health

Value of conceptual framework for advanced nursing
The advanced practicing nurse is increasingly undertaking interdisciplinary roles, beyond
merely alleviation of somatic symptoms of the patients. Advanced practicing nurses are now
entrusted with a variety of multiple functions such as providing consultation to patients as well
families, assessing the patient’s health status on various functional and developmental levels as
well as collaborating with clinicians in the diagnosis and prescription of medications to patients
(Heale & Buckley, 2015). Hence, concerning the dynamic roles of today’s advanced practicing
nurse, the value of development of a conceptual framework is immense in order to clearly define
the roles of advanced practicing nurses, in not just disease prevention, but also in the
multidisciplinary roles of counseling, diagnosis, researching, evaluating and follow up of the
patient, both at individual, as well as at the community levels.
Health Promotion: The Metaparadigm Concept
Patient/Client
With respect to the conceptual framework of the health promotion model, the advance
nurse should aim to conduct health promotion activities, not only through obtaining extensive
patient case histories for treatment of the same at the psychosocial, developmental and functional
platforms, maintenance of records of patients, evaluation of the patients reception to the
treatment plan, along with provision of patient consulting services and counseling of the
concerned families. (Swan et al., 2015). There is also a need for the advanced practice nurse to
conduct extensibe research in order to conduct adequate diagnosis (Lucchini et al., 2017).

Health
With respect to health promotion, advanced practicing nurses should target to administer
and transmit sufficient healthcare and treatment functionalities, beyond merely alleviation of
somatic symptoms, by considering the psychosocial, developmental and functional aspects of the
health of the patient. The advance nurse should also aim to conduct health promotion activities
through provision of adequate diagnosis and medication, evaluation of the patient as well as
aiming to conduct adequate follow up and counseling practices at the individual as well as
community level, for greater health promotion (Andrew et al., 2014).
Nursing
With respect to successful conductance of activities based on health promotion, advanced
practicing nurses should strive to ensure provision of quality health care services beyond the
individual, institutional or community platforms, to emerge into the inclusion of ensuring a
healthy treatment of the population globally. Advanced practicing nurses should also conduct
adequate health promotion activities consisting of equity and recognition of diversity, through
the inclusion of economically unprivileged groups, such as indigenous aborigines, groups living
in remote areas or deprived populations, without any sense of discrimination. The advanced
practicing nurses should also aim to conduct nursing health promotion, by providing consultation
to additional staff and subordinate nurses (Melnyk et al., 2014).
Environment
The advanced practicing nurse can perform health promotion activities, through usage of
‘faith community nursing’ principles. These include, consideration of the familial and cultural
backgrounds, economic conditions, nature of the surrounding population in which the patient is
residing, as well as the technological and social advancements present in the vicinity of the

concerned patient. The advanced nurse should hence, consider the implementation of a holistic
treatment plan for the patient as well as the community for the purpose of disease eradication
considering cultural and ethnical backgrounds (Kimbrell & Powers, 2016).
Conclusion
Today’s advanced practicing nurse, is required to conduct health promotion activities
beyond merely the alleviation of patient somatic symptoms (Swan et al., 2015). Health
promotion activities conducted by the advanced practicing nurses, will now require assessing
patients at various psychological, social, developmental and functional platforms, along with
consideration of the diagnosis of the patient keeping in mind the response exhibited in
accordance to the treatment procedures (Heale & Buckley, 2015). Hence, the need of the hour, is
to further clearly define the scope and activities of the advanced practicing nurses, which would
further result in the development of clarified theoretical frameworks, as well as the enhance
health promotion.
