QUESTION-
Discuss how the concept of "health" has changed overtime. Discuss how the concept has
evolved to include wellness, illness, and overall well-being. How has health promotion changed
over time? Why is it important that nurses implement health promotion interventions based on
evidence-based practice?
ANSWER-
World Health Organisation has defined health as a state of complete mental, physical and
social well being, and not just the absence of infirmity or disease. This shows of how the concept
of health has changed to overall well being in today’s world. It is not defined with the absence of
diseases but inclusion of mental and social wellness. With the growing trends of competition
amongst the people in the society, illness has taken a form of depression, stress and lack in
nutrition value. In today’s world, in addition to absence of impairment and disease, it is also the
capacity of a man to cope up with demands of daily life and maintain balance in the physical and
social environment (Lewis, 2011).
Sometimes, a person might be affected with a disease, but cannot feel ill because of the
healthy mental state (Lewis, 2011). A person must be in the state of balance with the self in order to be
feeling healthy from within. Hence, the definition of health has broadened its criteria in the
today’s world.
Health promotion interventions used by the nurses include strategies and elements
designed to promote the overall health status. It is very much necessary for the nurses to focus on
the evidence based practice so as to judge the activities based on medical, educational, societal,
and behavioural and client centred approaches. This practice facilitates the nurses in taking
quality decisions and providing care based on clinical expertise which would include relevant
and current research on the topic. In the changing trends of the world and widening definition of
health, it is important for the nurses to follow the recent studies and situations in order to provide
justice to their practice (Johnson, 2016).
