Introduction
The purpose of this task is to provide a brief overview about the health and safety issues
happening within the healthcare organization. The task tells about the activities initiated in May
Care Home in context to the health and safety measures of the patients of the organization.
Further it also tells about the mitigation which the organization shall take, more details about the
task discussed below.
Task 1: Understand how health and safety legislation is implemented in
the health and social care workplace
1.1
My healthcare organization May Care home manages the care activities and initiates
proper communication with legislative features in the organization. Creation of health
and safety policies in the organization is an important need which shall be followed
according to the National Health Services and Health safety executives. Further ways in
which my organization initiates legislation are discussed below:
 Personal and organizational practice: while applying the communicating
policies of health and safety, system and procedure the organization upholds the
employees to practices rightful activities which do not harm the sentiments or
emotions of any person. Like in my organization May Care, we follow the policy
of training employees and counseling them so as to keep them focused. Also the
personal needs of the employees were also focused by the company. This process
satisfied the requirements of the employees due to which they satisfied the needs
of the clients as well (Reese 2015).
 Monitor and review: this aspect of the organization includes the check of
practices, auditing of risks, upgrading procedures and policies and adapting
knowledge from the experiences. Mrs. May Care Homes developed the
understanding about the need of practicing monitoring in the process so as to
avoid the accidents like deaths. The trust board of the organizations held

responsible to listen to the issues of clients and provide them proper responses
(Yazdani, et. al., 2015).
 Care Planning: care planning process provides assurance to the people that there
is an effective and efficient strategy implemented while considering the health
and safety legislations present in the environment. With regard to this concept, the
individuals and the organization can fulfill their demands by intensifying the
wellbeing state of the employees, meeting their needs to enhance stability and
security and implanting good and authoritative principles. Care planning process
in my health care organization Mrs. May Care Homes was not effective enough to
carry out the business functions easily.
Dilemma: in a healthcare organization, effective communication is the key to
workplace management under which hindrance causes dilemma for the
organization. Further, in order to ensure that the work done in the management
creates effectiveness then they must initiate activities like risk-benefit analysis,
personal risk and risks related to others, use of resources an importance of
stakeholders in the company (Jespersen, and Hasle 2017).
 Health and safety policy: it is one of the most important policies in the process
of communication of health and safety care. For the purpose of initiating such
activities my organization developed compliances and responsible practices which
was adhered by all people connected with the management.
1.2
Few responsible acts which shall be implemented by the management of the Mrs. May
Care Homes are discussed below:
 Honesty and Integrity: the basic and foremost rule of the healthcare organization
is its honesty with the patients. The management of my organization shall inform
their clients of the complete information related to their treatment and illness.
There shall not be any single fact which shall be hidden from them. Thus, the
organization shall maintain social trust in the environment so as to initiate easy
flow of work. In Mrs. May Care Home, all the employees aim to be trustworthy
with the patients and increase their level of satisfaction.

 Professionalism: initiation of professional skills helps a person to increase the
efficiencies in the environment. Thus, physicians of thee company must be
responsible enough to understand the demand for their job and be available every
time when required. Also, the employees shall work on their job with utmost
responsibility as any mistake in their job can attract death to the client as well.
Thus it shall be noted that the management of the Mrs. May Care Homes shall
understand the need for professional environment in the organization and they
shall implement the same (Chartier 2014).
 Quality check: the health care organizations should always be dedicated to
developing continuous improvement in the quality of their service provided to the
patients. The management of my organization should take steps in such a way that
it reduces the medical errors leading to the death of patients. Also, the employees
shall aim to increase the level of satisfaction of the customers by increasing level
of safety and communicating all the mandatory information to them. Further, we
shall also minimize the overuse of resources instead they shall alternative natural
solutions to upgrade the health of the patients (Chang, et. al., 2017).
 Maintenance of trust: trust is the foremost important aspect in the field of
healthcare which shall not be ignored by any person in the company. Thus, we
being the mangers of the company shall aim to increase the trust of customers in
the company. The employees shall mark it as their duty to maintained trust and
solidarity in the working of the organization. Trust can only be developed itself
with the time. So the employees will make it their habit to perform the above
mentioned activities than can automatically gain the trust of clients of the
healthcare organization.
 Maintaining code of ethics: every qualified healthcare organization has their
own code of ethics and they should also uphold this code. The WHO recent
studies show that care is not addressed formally in much proficient code of ethics
on its own. This states that either the organization will develop the habit of care or
they will follow the code of ethics organized by the board. Thus, this aspect shall
be properly taken care of the management team of my organization so that they
can multitask both the functions efficiently (Zingg, et. al., 2015).

1.3
Determining the health and safety priorities appropriate to work settings, it shall be noted
that it is the responsibility of the management to ensure that all the workforce of the
organization is trained on the health and safety issues that may attract the employees
while performing their duties (Hall, et. al., 2016). This process starts from the basic
concept such as cleanliness which is important aspect and can avoid the problem of food
poisoning. Additionally, the medical machines shall be kept at their respective places
only and they shall not be displaced from their actual position. Another major aspect
which shall positively affect the working of my company and save them from many
problems is the skill set of employees of the company. If the employees are efficient
enough to handle any kind of situation and still move on without any stress (Keller, et.
al., 2016).
Thus, required skills are one of the most mandatory aspects of the healthcare
organization. Also, some of the basic amenities which are mandatory in organization
shall be provided by the management, such as fire extinguisher, emergency exit,
precaution from hazardous drugs etc. Further, the electronic equipment shall also be
properly maintained so that the organization can avoid attracting any incident on the
premises (All, et. al., 2016). The patients who have problem with the radioactive waves
of the machines shall be taken care properly so that the environmental factors do not
negatively affect their health. Further, in order to ensure health and safety, we shall
properly train their employees so they do not case a problem with the action of their
word. Thus, it shall be noted that good communication practices shall be implemented in
the management of the organization. Thus, in this way, our organization Mrs. May Care
Homes Company can prioritize the need for health and safety measures demand of the
company (Carayon 2016).

Task 2: Understand the ways in which health and safety requirement s
impact on customers and the work of practitioners in the health and
social care workplace
2.1
According to the NHS (2015), implementation of the process of risk assessment has
become an important need in the healthcare organization as non-compliance of this
process can negatively result in the health of patients. Talking about the case of Connor
Sparrowhawk, the patient was suffering from epileptic and autistic traits and was
admitted on 19th March 2013. Thereafter the patient died on 4th of July 2013 due to the
carelessness of the organization, the management left the patient alone for bath under
which he submerged himself and died. The employees and the service users are liable by
the organization to analyze and evaluate the risk involved with health of the patients and
they shall aim to avoid the harms that could occur in the organizational culture (Hunter,
et. al., 2017). Thus, the organization shall always aim to resolve such issues on the prior
basis only, they shall initially identify the risks and hazards associated with the activities
of the organization and then assess the level of danger related to the clients. After
assessing the level of danger; and harms that the patient himself can cause to them, then
they shall implement precautionary actions against the risk assessment to minimize the
risks. Connecting the above statements to the phrase, it shall be noted that if Murphy
would have adequately analyzed and measured the case of Connor and stated to the
management of Slade House with all the negative factors which can create ill health, then
there was a possibility that the physician would analyze and evaluate the risk and do not
leave the patient alone to cause damage to himself (Kann, et al., 2014). Also, another
drawback in the case was that the Murphy did not properly respond to the signals given
of the patient that is once when Connor was biting his tongue and it was assumed as an
expression of anger which was wrong. And another time when he had a bleeding nose
just after the bath. These two activities instigated that Connor should not be left alone for
bath, but the psychiatrist was unable to understand the critical situation of the patent due
to which their carelessness attracted death penalty for Connor (Moyer 2014).

2.2
Risk assessment is marked as one of the major aspects of health and safety policy that
helps the organization to initiate social care and attention for the clients in the company.
Information about the risk assessment helps in implementing plan for the management of
risk for assessing and reducing them as well. Such information helps the organization to
measure the degree of risk associated with the patients and the probability of its
occurrence. With respect to that, the risk assessment at Slade House depicted the future
vulnerability of the policies and its implications for the clients. This assessment also
assists the organization in arranging the secondary plan for the emergency measures and
develops strategic actions as well (Schuldberg 2016).
Further, the risk assessment practices are identified as an important task which shall not
be waived by the management of the organization. Information received from this risk
assessment process helps the management to evaluate the probability of risks and its
outcomes as well. Further, this information helps the people in constructing appropriate
environment considering the health and safety measures. It shall be noted that everyone
who is connected with the activities of the health care management will get affected by
the work activities initiated in the organization (van Eeghen, et al., 2016). The
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulation (MHSWR) makes this regulation
to ask the employers and managers to continue with the risk assessment in order to
calculate it and minimize it. Thus, talking about the impact of such managerial practices
on the Connor and his family, it was noticed that the whole family faced a huge shock
when they came to know that Connor died by submerging in the water during a bath. It
was counted as the whole mistake of the management handling the case of Connor; they
should not have let him done anything alone. Such happening was a result of failed risk
assessment procedure only (Hubley, and Miller 2016).
2.3
Non-compliance with the existing laws formed by RIDDOR, it shall be noted that the
organization has to face serious impact on the Slade House. Some of the examples of
such effect would violation of the privacy of the patient or loss of confidentiality, failure
to initiate adequate safety of fool, failure to maintain proper risk assessment as well. Non-

compliance with such legislation affects both employer and employee in the organization,
it can be a fine in financial terms, cancellation of license, criminal penalty etc. According
to the section 37 of the Health and safety, it shall be noted that if any person voluntarily
or involuntarily neglects their duty, then they can prosecute (Ogden 2016). Generally, in
organization, such non-compliance is dealt with an issuance of general warning, but if the
case is serious and pressured by higher authorities then the regulatory bodies need to
focus on the case strictly and apply adequate penalty as well. RIDDOR refers to
Reporting of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrence Regulation, 1995. Only the
people responsible for, employer or individual managing the activities of premises are
required to make the submission of the report of RIDDOR. Such report includes the
severe workplace accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous happenings of the
organization. Noncompliance of such activities results in increase in the accidental deaths
in the organization, due to which Connor also lost his life. Thus, the RIDDOR rules shall
comply with all the organization present in the market so as to run their organization
successfully (Sundelin, et. al., 2016).
2.4
While initiating the healthcare and social activities, all organization are likely to face
dilemma which will hamper the growth and regular business activities. The possible
dilemma faced by the Slade House is discussed below:
 Maintenance of technology: Healthcare organizations like Slade House favor the
development of technology in its use at the workplace. This new change helps the
organization in efficiently working with the client and taking less time in doing
test etc. But implementation of such technology incurs heavy taxes for the
healthcare organization. The company bears heavy taxes due to which their profits
minimize.
 High degree of corruption: the organization implementing different policies in the
organization in order to enhance the organizational services and provide better
results to the client and the workforce as well. But the policies implemented lack
co-ordination and honesty in the organization due to which corruption hampers
such policies resulting in ineffectiveness of such rules and guidelines. Thus, the
presence of high level of corruption in the organization rusts the whole internal

process of the organization. By taking bribes, the government officials are
allowing other people to circulate malicious drugs which are harmful to the health
of the patients (Blackmon, et. al., 2016).
 Public Negligence: The healthcare organizations such are Slade House face
dilemma in implementing policies and practices in the system in order to initiate
awareness and good healthcare services in the organization. But public negligence
creates impediment towards the use of such policies related to healthcare and
safety at the workplace (Strasser, et. al., 2016).
Task 3: Understand the monitoring and review of health and safety in
the health and social care workplace
3.1
It is necessary to review health and safety care in the organization so as to initiate
adequate work of work along with safety in the organization. for that purpose, the
management needs to monitor and review the activities of the organization, further ways
in which the activities shall be monitored are discussed below:
 Measuring Health and Safety Performance: there is a well-known saying which
states that one cannot manage things which they cannot measure. This phrase
states that measuring the process of health and safety is an important aspect which
helps in realizing the risk and threats as well as identifying the places where
improvement is required (Christensen, et. al., 2016).
 Active Measure: Active measures provide feedback for the performance of the
healthcare organization before the accident actually happens. the below
mentioned are the active measure which shall be followed by the management of
the organization May Care Home so as to initiate effectiveness in working and
develop risk assessment procedures.
 Achievement of specific plans and producers to attain objective: the
organization shall aim to attain the plans and implement them in a way
that the objectives of the organization are achieved (Stimson 2016).

 Operation of health and safety management practices: the organization
shall initiation operation in the direction of the objectives of the
organization.
 Compliance with the procedures and standards: the organization shall aim
to comply with all the policies formed by the health authorities prevailing
in the market. Further, they shall form report under which the accidents
happened in the company along with the proactive measure taken by them
(Dumont, et. al., 2013).
 Site condition inspection: inspection of the site shall be made on the prior
basis so that risk can be assessed and evaluated.
 Environmental monitoring: environment under which the staff and the
patient are going to sustain shall also be monitored and compared with the
conditions of the client. They shall be monitored in such a way that the
patient does not face any issues in the organization (Yapar 2014).
 Behavioral observation: behavior of the patient shall be observed on the
priority basis so that a minute change in their behavior shall not get
unnoticed. Also due to such minute changes only patients Connor dies,
thus the staff shall note all the minor details and the patient and change in
the day to day activities.
 Reactive Measure: this process is an effective tool which measures and reviews
the practices and policies implemented in the organization. Reactive monitoring
includes activities like,
 Injuries
 Complaints
 Property damage (Haimes 2015)
 hazard report
 ill health
 incidents with potential
 Inspection: inspections include the process of looking for materialistic evidence of
how well the health and safety measures are being managed. A general inspection
involves looking at the environment present on the premises, floor, first aid

services, and passage welfare. Similarly, the inspection shall be done on the
higher risk items as well which includes pressure vessels, scaffolds, lifting
equipment and excavations (Bongar, and Sullivan 2013).
3.2
Policies and practices are formed by many organizations prevailing in the market but its
implementation shall be compulsorily made and initiated in the organization. the ways to
check the effectiveness of safety and health policies in the workplace are discussed
below:
 Organization and responsibilities: in a healthcare organization, it is the
responsibility of the staff (practice manager) to promote positivity in the
workplace and initiate the flow of work effectively. Thus if the practice manager
initiates effective positivity in the organization and develop good working
environment in the organization, the typical policies formed in the organization
will get implemented easily without any hindrance. Also, safe culture will reduce
the problem of employee turnover, resulting too which the staff will get invested
in the business activities and initiate effectiveness as well (Burke 2013).
 Project design and construction: efficacious project design and construction
process can lead the organization towards achievement constructive, strong and
safe culture. Such type of culture will help the employee to get self-motivation
and achieve the objectives defined by the managers of the organization. If the
organizational and management of the organization is already designed under a
code of procedure then it will get easy for the managers to initiate practices within
a format (Mortimer, and Mortimer 2015). This type of implementation of
practices will help the company to initiation good flow of work along with
assessment of risk procedure as well. With the segregation of proper
responsibilities, the employees will get focused and will be held liable for the
work done by them. Responsibility towards the clients will also increase and it
will control the implementation of negative practices in the organization. With the
formation of risk assessment process, the safety of the client will increase
resulting to decrease in accidental deaths (Ducasse, et. al., 2013).
