1HEALTH AND SAFETY
Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) mainly focuses on the safety, health and
wellbeing of the people working in an organization. They mainly focuses on to design action
plan to reduce accidental events and occupational diseases (“Basic OH&S Program
Elements”, 2019). On July, 2018 OH&S has made legislations for companies having more
than 20 employees to implement a health and safety program. In this assignment,
pharmaceutical company of Canada named TaroPharma® (Taro Pharmaceutical Industries
Ltd.) has been chosen as it has more than 20 employees working presently and has also
implemented OH&S legislations.
TaroPharma® was established in the year 1950 and is one of the leading
pharmaceutical companies in the world. More than 600 employees from Canada, Brampton
and Ontario are presently working with this company. TaroPharma® is also associated with
Sun Pharma from 2010. In 1998 TaroPharma® initiated their business in U.S. market and the
drug launched was approved by FDA. This company develops and manufacture topical
products such as creams, ointments and gels especially related to dermatology. They produce
wide range of products based on the requirement of the region or country. This
pharmaceutical company aims to discover, develop, manufacture and market highest quality
of healthcare product ("TARO CANADA | Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.", 2019).
The important goal of Occupational Health and Safety program is to foster a safe and
healthy work environment. It also aims to protect co-workers, employers and their family
member from workplace hazards. They aims to remove hazard entirely to prevent any
workplace hazards. In case the hazard cannot be removed they must focus on controlling the
hazard to minimize it to a safer level. Prevention of hazard in workplace needs training of the
workers as well as educating the workers about the types of health hazards which might
affect the workplace environment. Education of the workers about the hazard in workplace
will help in taking faster decision during any hazard. It will also help to reduce the hazard and

protect the employees from the effects of the hazard (“Basic OH&S Program Elements”,
2019).
The four elements or components that will be top priority of TaroPharma® are
employee orientation, workplace inspection, emergency procedure and medical first aid
(“Basic OH&S Program Elements”, 2019).
Employee orientation helps to provide knowledge about health and safety to new
workers. It has been noted that new employees face major risk of workplace accidents. In this
orientation workers are educated and trained with emergency procedures, location of fist aid
equipment, use protective equipment. Soon after the orientation each employee must be
assessed on their understanding of safety measures. This will help in better understanding of
the training (“Basic OH&S Program Elements”, 2019).
Workplace inspections will help to identify the hazard which is present so that proper
actions can be taken. Workers and supervisors are responsible for reporting any unsafe
conditions. Sometimes planed inspections are also required. Records of previous accidents
and measures taken during the accident must be known to every worker. OH&S legislation
involves workplace inspections to take rapid actions during any cause of hazard and to
maintain safe-healthy environment. Pre-planned inspection also helps to reduce the
occurrence of fatal accident (“Basic OH&S Program Elements”, 2019).
Emergency procedures deals with emergencies such as fire, chemical explosions and
natural hazards. It must educate the workers about the possible hazards which can occur
while in work. The main objective of emergency procedure is to minimize injuries, accidents
and damage. This can be done by compiling the list of possible hazards, possible cause of the
hazard, effects of the hazard and an emergency plan to evacuate during the hazard (“Basic
OH&S Program Elements”, 2019).

3HEALTH AND SAFETY
Medical and first aids are generally included under the health and safety legislation.
Workers must be aware of the location of first aid facilities, attendants, staffs who are trained
in providing first aid. They must be trained in giving first aid, carrying the injured person to
medical facilities and recording the number of accidents and injury cases. Knowledge of first
aid will help in providing fast medical care to injured worker and healthy working
environment (“Basic OH&S Program Elements”, 2019).
The first key factors make a healthy and safe workplace in TaroPharma® is training
of the workers in personal safety. This will include the use of fire extinguisher in case of any
fire in workplace, providing mask to individual workers in case of any chemical explosion.
Second key factor is to train workers in evacuation programs during any hazard. Thirdly, the
workers must be given knowledge about the potential risk factors in the work place. This will
help them to take rapid decisions during an emergency. Fourthly, workplace inspections are
important to reduce potential risk factors which might cause severe damage or hazard. All the
four key factors are important to maintain a safe and healthy workplace. Also it will reduce
the occurrence of any severe hazard in TaroPharma®.
