ABSTRACT
The whole research project is based on analysing health and safety issues in textile
industries in Mauritius. The project will critically evaluate the health and safety issues as well as
necessities in businesses in order to promote well-being of people at work place effectively. The
health and safety obligations and other issues will be discussed of employees of Hoksun Co Ltd.
It is necessary to ensure workplace safety of employees in order to keep them aware of
dangerous issues and machineries which are prevailing in business effectively. It can be said that
such types of hazards are normally seen in textile industries where the risk is high of getting
injured. The current dissertation is based on analysing and determining issues related to
workplace safety in terms of health and other safeties which are necessary for an employee in
business. The involvement of employees in health and safety programmes as well as issues
concerns will be discussed in this dissertation. In addition to this, the dissertation will be cover
key issues related to employees in terms of health and safety with one of the most effective
textile businesses in Mauritius which is Hoksun Co Ltd. This will be focused on managing
health and safety environment at workplace for employees in company with their participation
and active involvement. In addition to this, business is also responsible for promoting health and
safety environment within firm and engagement of workers towards occupational safety,
education and accident promotional activities. It can be said that it is necessary to reduce health
and safety issues in order to work without any hesitation or fear of injuries. Involvement and
participation of employees will help to solve health and safety issues by active engagement of
workers towards health and safety effectively. This can be also solved by managing ideas and
strategies provided by management in order to reduce health and safety issues at workplace.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Workplace health and safety are some issues affecting business production and
employee’s work. The main problem considered by this scenario is health and safety issues of
workers at workplace. It is the duty of management to provide shelter and mindful activities to
full-time and part-time maintenance workers. Occupational health and safety administration of
Mauritius is the biggest as well as largest body involved in health and safety issues which are
mostly occurring in these time in textile businesses. It can be said that injuries and hazards are
now one of the common issues for businesses at the time when a worker is working in a risk
prone area (Khan, Mustaq and Tabassum, 2014). The risk of getting injured is high in textile
businesses that there are a lot of machineries which are dangerous for health and cause numerous
accidents. Human resource management is responsible for managing and controlling health and
safety issues within company in order to promote health and safety considerations. Business
management is also in a charge for ensuring workplace safety of employees and also to produce
environment of safety.
1.2 Background of company
The textile and garments industry of Mauritius is key sector of country’s economy which
was originated 40 years later. At the initial stage there were only small manufacturers who were
giving their services and products to country or its domestic market was limited. But currently
this sector or industry of Mauritius is growing immensely and not only covering country but all
neighbouring and countries of South and East Africa as well. Textile industry of Mauritius is
about $1.2 billion sector with about 5.5 million people of country employed within. The industry
is been divided into many sub categories like that of apparel and garments, ethnic wear, fibre,
yarn, fabrics, home textiles, textile mills and machinery etc.,
Hoksun Co. Ltd is situated in Mauritius working and operating as most profitable textile
company of country. The company is been operating in various other countries with which they
are having excellent export and import relations in terms of textile products. Hoksun forms
amongst leading and successful companies in dyes manufacturer and also providing variety of
colour to clothes, paper food, leather, plastic and coating into country. Other than this it is also

having business deals with textile cloth dyeing, dyestuff making, reactive dyes production centre
and inorganic pigments suppliers.
1.3 Aim and objectives

1.5 Rationale to the study
The main reason behind conducting this case study to assess risks related to health and
safety such as accidents, dangerous hazards increasing day to day risks as well as deaths of
workers which is a big issue for business. The current scenario will discuss all the elements
involved in health and safety issues related to workplace safety in order to reduce negative
impact of unsafe environment within business (Chinniah, 2015). It can be said that there are
many accidents happening these days in businesses like textile, manufacturing and chemical
industries which is affecting employee’s obligations and workplace safety as well. The study will
examine various factors which produce health and safety issues related to employees which will
help to make strategies and plans that help to create a safe environment at workplace effectively.

It can be said that employees' participation is also decreasing due to the workplace safety issues
which is not good for business and also affect production and profitability. The study is
important that it will undertake employees involved in execution of safety measurement which
will help to increase workplace safety.
1.6 Significance of the study
The current dissertation is based on health and safety issues in textile firm such as
Hoksun Co Ltd. This will help to evaluate different factors of health and safety at workplace
which help employees to ensure that they are working in a safe environment. The study will help
researchers as well as scholars and students to analyse the negative impact of health and safety
issues within business and at workplace (Zamani Svanström and Peters, 2018). This will also
help to gain knowledge that how a firm is able to manage their health and safety issues in order
to reduce them. The further implementation of strategies and plans in order to provide workplace
safety for employees will be discussed which will provide an idea to students in order to
overcome with such issues efficiently. The dissertation will also help researchers to research on
the same topic for the better understanding and knowledge.
1.7 Dissertation structure
Chapter 1 Introduction: Introduction is the opening chapter of whole description involved in
dissertation which will help researcher and scholar to include overview of research project
effectively. There are different incorporate parts like destinations, examination, investigation and
points is vital and explained in this part. The measurements, models, theories and other
presentation part will be discussed in taken into this introduction part.
Chapter 2: Literature review: Literature review is the second chapter of dissertation part in
which different theories, models, approaches and strategies are collected through various
methods, journals, books and articles. Different information regarding health and safety issues
and the way to overcome them will be explained in this part. In addition to this, the topics
included in this part are done with proper citation.
Chapter 3: Research methodology: This part will include all types of research methodologies
which are used to perform the dissertation effectively. Optional and essential information in
order to gather information with the goals of analysing difficult part of research in order to take
legitimate results from the subject. In addition to this, researchers will utilise information taken

from 20 employees of Hoksun Co Ltd which will be done by surveys. This will also help to
disclose to us what is well-being and security measures which are to be taken.
Chapter 4: Result and Discussion: This is the most important part of research project which can
be described as an essential piece of paper which helps to determine real impact of advancement
in training and development programmes in order to work with health and safety standards
effectively. The part will analyse complete information included in literature review as well as
research methodology in order to produce final outcomes gathered from various sources of
information which are also valid and reliable.
Chapter 6: Conclusion and recommendations: This is the last part of project that will help to
disclose final conclusion from the overview of project in order to identify and determine various
issues in health and safety standards. This will help to produce some positive outcomes which
will work as recommendations for Hoksun Co Ltd in order to reduce negative impact of health
and safety issues determined in above sections effectively and efficiently. This section will also
help to gain knowledge that how firm is able to manage their health and safety issues at
workplace in order to reduce them.

This part is very important that it will help to demonstrate various thoughts, theories,
material and models related to health and safety issues which will be done by collecting
information from authentic sources such as books, articles, magazines and journals published by
authors effectively. This part will be done in thematic form in order to understand the concept
involved in whole dissertation effectively.
2.2 Importance of health and safety in business
According to Chung, (2016), employees’ participation and awareness is important that it
will help to understand importance of health and safety issues within business which helps to
increase a safe environment at workplace as well as in businesses. This will also help to
understand a factor that helps to reduce risk of health and safety issues. Employees should have
effective knowledge of safe environment at workplace in order to minimise such risk factors
effectively. There are many models and theories are described for a safe environment which
means the environment of workplace where all the employees are working should be risk as well
as hazards free that help to manage harmful and dangerous things. Employer, managers and
leaders are responsible for promoting health and safety activities as well as well fare of
employees in order to work without any fear of injuries.

It is stated by Meckenstock, Barbosa‐Póvoa and Carvalho, (2016), that there is no way to
control all the things and events within firm that some necessary actions are required for serious
damages and losses effectively. The firm should reduce factors which affect business
environment as well as health and safety of employees at workplace. In addition to this,
promoting health and safety at workplace will help to provide significant benefits to workers as
well as managers. An effective and peaceful environment is important for business in order to
increase production and profitability and this will be done by monitoring workplace safety
issues. In respect to this, health and safety programmes, increasing production, reducing
absenteeism and risk factors associated with rules and legislations should be managed and
controlled by firm and management that helps to improve morale and job satisfaction. This will
also help to reduce stress and tension and risk of getting injured from any equipment's. An
effective and risk free environment will help employees to work in a safe place in order to do
their jobs without and fear of injury or death. Thankfully, there are different ways from which
the firm is able to reduce the risk of accidents at workplace by implementing various strategies
and plans. It will also help to boost the production process which will help to increase
profitability and provide significant benefits to the firms so that they can achieve their desired
