This research project examines the provision of health and social care services to individuals with mental illnesses within the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The study delves into the increasing prevalence of mental health issues, the evolution of NHS provisions, and the impact of legislation like the Mental Health Act. It aims to identify factors influencing the condition of mental health patients, evaluate existing service provisions, and analyze both positive and negative aspects of the care system. The research employs interpretivism and descriptive research design, utilizing secondary data analysis to explore the complexities of mental health service delivery. The project investigates the impact of loneliness, discrimination, and inadequate provisions on patient outcomes, while also considering the role of community treatment orders and the importance of patient involvement in care. CHAPTER 1: ABSTRACT
Government has made various provision in order to provide effective health care services
to the patients. All these provisions are able to enhance effectiveness of care services. Present
study assesses health and social care service provision to the service users with mental illness.
Furthermore, it identifies factors that impact on mental patients and their condition. In addition,
it explains positive and negative aspects of provisions of health and social care system for mental
illness people.
CHAPTER 2: INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
Mental health issues are increasing in the UK; more than one out of six adults are
suffering from the mental illness. Over a period of time, National Health Services
(NHS) has improved the health and social care setting as well as provisions. By this way, more
people are able to get treatment in the hospitals. It works in a direction so that clinical needs of
individuals can be met and they can get recovered soon. Government is continuously working for
improving services for users (Long-term mental health care for people with severe mental
disorders, 2011). Statistical records show that in the year 2014, comprehensive inspection on
mental health services has occurred in the England. It has been identified that there are many
people who are suffering from the mental illness but they are unable to get services in hospitals.
After that, authorities have developed 54 NHS mental health trusts and 221 independent care
homes in the country.
The main agenda of government is to provide high quality care services to patients so that
they get recovered soon and their mental condition can be improved. In order to provide them
quality care, government and concerned department makes effective provisions and make
modifications in the existing health care system. There are many reasons of suffering from
mental illness which are like family pressure, work life balance issues, loneliness, economic
issues, etc. All these factors increase the risk of mental illness in society. This is the reason that
number of mental cases are increasing in the United Kingdom (Key legislation - Mental Health
Act 1983, 2013). Government of the UK makes plan so that patients with mental health issues
can receive immediate care in the hospitals and no discrimination will take place with them. In
order to fulfil this objective, authorities have provided extra funds to hospitals so that health care

professionals can implement the latest technologies and provide them quality psychological
treatment. This can help them in improving their condition and they can get recovered soon.
Mental Health Act 2007 has been introduced by government of UK in year 2007 which
actually came into force in 2008. It was for welfare of metal patients so that they can get equal
treatment in hospitals without any discrimination (Funk, 2016). There were many service users
who were suffering from dementia and other mental illnesses but due to discrimination, they
were not getting quality care in the health and social care firms. Mental Health Act was actually
imposed in the year 1983 but later on, it was amended in 2008. It has supported in promoting
dignity in care setting process in order to safeguard service users. The main agenda of making
this law is to ensure that all people who are suffering from serious mental disorders can be able
to get treatment without any issue. This provision has specified the role of professionals and way
in which they have to deal with the service users who are suffering from mental illness.
Present study will assess health and social care service provision to the service users with
mental illness. Furthermore, it will identify factors that impact on mental patients and their
condition. In addition, it will explain positive and negative aspects of provisions of health and
social care system for mental illness people.
One of the major problems in United Kingdom is that death rate of mental patients is
increasing. Statistical records show that there are many people who are suffering from dementia,
autism spectrum disorder, etc. Due to poor care service provision, they are unable to get quality
care in the hospitals. Sometimes, social restrictions create issue for them to get timely treatment
by the medical professionals. This enhances the risk on these people and increase death rate in
nation.

There are various factors that forced researcher to select this topic of health and social
care system. One of the major elements is interest area as scholar has worked in the same field.
Individual has long term experience of this industry which helps researcher in understanding
topic and finding data on it. Researcher has worked as nurse in the hospital (Mukaetova-
Ladinska and Stuart-Hamilton, 2016). This has encouraged individual in conducting study on
same topic. Another factor that has contributed to selection of topic is adequacy of data
availability. This is the topic on which many studies have been conducted earlier by other
scholars. Thus, individual has many details available on health and social care service provisions
to users with mental illness. With the assistance of this information, researcher can become able
to complete the study in an effective manner. Furthermore, this is a feasible topic and it has been
provided by the university. It is the semi structure topic and so, it would be easy for the scholar
to conduct research on this.
CHAPTER 3: LITERATURE REVIEW
Factors impact on the mental patients condition
As per the view of Slade and et.al, (2015) loneliness is the main element which impact on
the mental health condition of the patients. There are many adults those who do not get proper
attention from families and friends. In such condition they become isolated from the society as
well. This loneliness create difficulty for them and they do not share their feelings with others as
well. This create issue for the medical professional in understanding medical illness in the person
because they do not discuss about their problems openly with them. In such condition doctors
fail to provide quality care to these services users which enhance problems for them. Thornicroft
and et.al, (2016) argued that discrimination is the main cause which affect badly to the mental
condition of the service users. Whenever person with mental illness go for the treatment in the
hospitals then people laugh at these people and medical professional do not deal with them
properly. In such condition their moral get down and they fail to get timely treatment in the
hospital. This is the main reason which increases risk on individual and they fail to get recovered
soon. According to Prince and et.al, (2016) poor legislation and ineffective provisions are the
major cause for the mental illness of patients. Medical professionals do not have proper

knowledge about the latest technologies so that they get failed to provide correct psychological
treatment to these service users. In such contention people do not get quality care in the health
care organization.
Health and social care service provisions
As per the view of Roberts, (2017) mental health act 1983 has been introduced by the
government of UK in order to protect rights of mental patients and providing them quality care
services in the hospitals. It ensures that each person get equal treatment in the care homes and no
discrimination take place in the workplace. It directs medical professional that they have to deal
with these mental patients well and have to understand their clinical needs. Government of the
nation has provided necessary training to the doctors so that they can deal with these people well
and can provide them quality care treatment in the hospitals. Hamilton and et.al, (2015) new
legislations have been made which indicates the medical professionals that they cannot give
Electro convulsive therapy with the consent of the patients. If the individual is in the serious
condition where individual cannot give consent hen doctors are required to take permission from
their family members before giving them electronic shocks.
As per the view of Mukaetova-Ladinska and Stuart-Hamilton, (2016) health and social
care provisions have been made for the safeguarding of mental patients. These provisions
indicate that each medical professional has to behave clam with the service users. They cannot
discriminate them due to their illness.
Positive and negative aspects of health and social care service provisions to the metal patients
Hamilton and et.al, (2015) argued that existing health and social care provisions are not
such effective, still patients are getting inadequate treatment due to which re-attendance rate of
these mental patients are increasing in the hospitals. As per the view of Slade and et.al, (2015)
health care authorities have passed community treatment orders. They have allowed the patients
to leave the hospitals but it is essential to supervise their condition time to time. This helps in
monitoring the condition of the mental patients and providing them timely care so that their
mental condition can be improved soon.
According to Thornicroft and et.al, (2016) health and social care act impacts positive on
the health care provisions because now medical professionals are bound to behave well with the
patients and take care of them. Doctors are required to involve people in decision making
process. Hey have to develop strong relationship with them and do not have to discriminate

them. It is essential to keep their personal information confidential so that they get equal
behaviour in the hospitals by other people.

Research methodology is the process that helps the scholar in carrying out the
investigation n in effective manner. In order to conduct the study in appropriate way researcher
will take support of interpretivism research philosophy. As the entire study will be qualitative in

carrying out the study in appropriate way. Use of technical equipments allows the person

in gathering in-depth detail about the topic and developing understanding level. For the
present research individual is needed internet, excel software. By taking support of

Research philosophy

Interpretivism, positivism, realism are three main types of philosophies that are used in different
types of projects (Vaioleti, 2016). Positivism is the method which explains that reality can not be
changed or influenced by other factors. This method conducts the entire investigation from
objective viewpoint. Scholar observes the facts in order to develop understanding about the
topic. In this tool investigator makes predictions on the basis of previously observed information.
It is generally applied in quantitative type of studies. Interpretivism is another type of philosophy
which carries out the entire research from subjective view point. This method is applied in the
qualitative type of research projects (Smith, 2015). On other hand realism is the type of method

which disclose truth of reality. In the present study on health and social care services provisions
to service users with mental illness researcher has taken support of interpretivism research
philosophy. This has helped in providing alternative solutions to the scholar so that research
problems can be addressed appropriately. As present study is qualitative in nature thus, existence
of this philosophy is suitable.
Research approach
It is another essential method of research methodology. There are two main types of
approaches: inductive and deductive (Panneerselvam, 2014). Both these methods have unique
characteristic. Inductive is the type of technique in which scholar takes support of theories and
models in order to carry out the research and developing understanding about the topic. On other
hand deductive is another method which takes support of numbers and mathematical calculations
in order to find out answers. In the present research, scholar has applied inductive research
approach. This is suitable technique and has helped in identifying health and social care services
provisions to service users with mental illness. With the assistance of this approach individual
has become able to identify patterns and regularities (Khan, 2014).
Research design
Research design is the way or the outline of carrying out the research. This show that
entire process in which individual will conduct the investigation and will find the answers.
Descriptive, exploratory, experimental etc. are designs which are used in different projects.
Descriptive research design is the type of technique which provides clear picture of the situation.

Research strategy

other hand secondary data collection is the method in which researcher takes support of already
available details (Vaioleti, 2016). All these data have been used in earlier studies that would be
used by the researcher in the present investigation. In the current study on health and social care

collection sources. Health care provisions for the mental illness patients is the vast topic on
which individual can gather details from the government websites. Primary data collection
sources take support of questionnaire, interview etc. techniques, in order to gather details but in
the secondary data collection sources researcher uses books, journals, internet articles etc. for
developing their understanding. In the current study as well researcher has used books, journals,
internet articles, government websites in order to know more about health and social care
provisions. All these sources have helped investigator in developing understanding (Faber and
et.al, 2016). By this way person has become able to answer the research problems and finding
accurate answers.
Data Analysis
Data analysis is the process of transforming data into useful information. It is
responsibility of researcher that to evaluate the details in analytical and logical manner so that
accurate answers can be gathered. In the qualitative study research takes support of thematic
analyses or secondary analysis technique. In which individual present information through
graphs and charts (Khan, 2014). On other hand in the quantitative type of researches individual
takes support of SPSS or other mathematical methods so that desired results can be find out. In
the present study on health and social care services provisions to service users with mental
illness scholar has taken support of secondary data analysis method. Individual has used books,

journals, government websites and has developed themes. On the bases of these details
individual has evaluated the data and has find out results. These results are reliable because
individual has taken details from authorities websites and reliable sources. Thus, use of
secondary data analysis method was suitable for the current research project (Vaioleti, 2016).
Ethical Consideration
It is responsibility of the scholar that to follow ethical aspects. There are some standards
which are required to be followed by the investigator while conducting the research. In order to
finish this study in appropriate manner individual has taken care of this element. Individual has
gather information from reliable sources but researcher has not copied any material from any
website (Panneerselvam, 2014). Individual has read these articles and have developed
understanding. Scholar has prepared the project in his own words thus, there is no issue of
plagiarism. Furthermore, individual has used books and journals of other researcher. But proper
citation has been done in this study in order to show that researcher is authentic. With the help of
proper citation scholar has given credit of work to other scholars. In addition, security and
confidentiality are the major aspects of the research projects. It is very important that all the
details that have been used in the study are kept safe and confidential. For maintaining this
aspect, investigator has saved the data in password protected computer and this password has not
been shared with third party (Flick, 2015).
Research limitation
While conducting the research, scholar has faced many limitations. One of the main issue
that faced by investigator was limited time. Person had to complete this research within specified
time which was very difficult because it was secondary research and searching these secondary
data is really time consuming process (Panneerselvam, 2014). But proper scheduling has
supported the scholar in finishing this research within specified period of time. Another major
limitation of this study was availability of poor financial resources. As investigator was having
limited funds and in such amount it was not possible to finish this research in accurate manner.
But effective utilization of resources has supported the scholar in completing the research with
quality and meeting with the objective (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault, 2015).
