Introduction
The report provides an important discussion about the brain injuries and the special care
provided to the patients during that time. This is due to the fact that health and social care must
be provided to the critical patients in an efficient manner so that mortality rate of the mentally
unstable patients are reduced. The report is designed in such a way that a clear perception of
health, illness, disability and behavior is understood. Additionally, numerous healthcare
strategies are discussed here. Therefore, several organizations have developed in the specific
locality so that they can offer medical treatments to the victims in an effective manner.
LO1
1.1 Analyze concepts of health, disability, illness and behavior in relation to users of health
and social care services.
Health can be considered as the state of complete mental, physical along with social well-being;
In addition this cannot be considered as only an absence of infirmity or the disease. Disability
can be considered as the impairment, which can be cognitive, mental, physical, mental,
intellectual along with developmental. On the other hand, disability can be considered as one of
the societal disadvantage (Flora, 2018). Generally it can arise from above mentioned
impairments. Illness can be considered as the condition of poor health. Moreover this can be
considered as one of the diseases. There is few philosophy of health and those are given below.
Health can be considered as one of the prime human right
Health can be considered as the essence of the productive life
Health is interred sectorial (Deresky, 2017)
1.2 Assess how perceptions of specific needs have changed over time
The specific needs of people would change on the basis of the requirement. Moreover, the
positive changes are there in the beliefs as well as perception of individuals toward the disable
people along with towards their requirements. It can be found that development has direct toward

the change following this perception towards the disability and specific needs of one person. In
the current time, it can be found that appropriate treatment is provided to the special people
because they face challenges to express their needs and to perform the regular activities (Kerwin
and Furlong, 2018). Concept of the equality can be adopted in order to offer the equal treatment
toward each individual. In addition, appropriate services regarding health and care are provided
toward the persons with particular requirements (Flora, 2018). The type of disability varies as
any person can have learning disability, physical disability and mental disability. The particular
needs can be varied considering the age of the users of the service. In addition, it can be found
that rules and regulations can be framed in order to safeguard the persons with the particular
requirements from the ill practices of society (Deresky, 2017). In the previous time, it was found
that disability is one of the bad spirits and the person is possessed by the spirit of devil and those
people were treated very badly and everybody keeps them away.

2.1. Analyze the care needs of individuals with specific needs
People those are suffering from brain injuries have different needs and therefore, proper care
must be provided to them. It is evident in many research works that people with brain injury do
not receive special medical care and end up committing suicides (Larpthaveesarp et al., 2015). A
review suggests that Tom, who was 43 years old, suffered a severe car accident 20 years back.
Due to lack of special medical treatment as he suffered fatal brain injury, he was found dead in
June 2014 at his Somerset house. He should have been provided with efficient medical care like
daily supported routine such as regular brain sensing monitoring when someone was speaking to
him or when he was hungry. This kind of special monitoring would have helped him to survive
5

the life threatening incident. Tome was facing mental issues like substance abuse, persistent
mobility and many other mental health related issues. However, he did not get any special
medical treatment that was very much required. In 2013, October, Somerset collaborating with
NHS Foundation Trust addressed Tom as self-harming victim who committed suicide out of his
mental disorder. This report was accepted by the police. On the other hand, his family wrote to
MP of the state that mental health practitioners and regional social care did not take any step
regarding his deteriorating mental health and was assessing him as a vulnerable one. Therefore, it
can be concluded from the study that Somerset council, NHS trust and local medication services
failed to provide an efficient medical care to Tom.
2.2. Explain current systems for supporting individuals with specific needs.
There are various healthcare centers that are specifically developed to provide special medical
care to brain injury patients (Bramlett et al., 2016). Somerset Trust, NHS council and several
NGOS are present in the market to provide to provide special treatments to the needy. In this
case, Tom referred to Headway, which is a brain injury support center and they stated that he has
very few areas of strength in his life. He was prescribed an ‘under control’ drug for
improvement. Moreover, Tom visited a psychologist during 2005 and told him that he took
alcohol and drugs on a daily basis to desensitized his mind. Hearing this, the doctor referred him
to drug and alcohol services committee so that he could track the record of Tom’s drug and
alcohol intake rate. Tom’s family showed grievances that although he was under medical care
and consulted different doctors for his health improvement, the medical centers did not provide
adequate care to him. The family members stated that if he was provided with sufficient mental
health care there was sufficient chance that he could have improved and survived ultimately.
They also told Tom was suffering from chronic insomnia and proper medication could have
reduced the severe case of approaching death. Tom shifted with Liz who was also suffering from
brain injury and he paid £100 a week to provide her adequate care.
2.3. Evaluate the services available in a chosen locality for individuals with specific needs.
In this context, as the discussion is solely based on brain injury, the organizations operating in
the locality for brain injury special care treatments are listed below:
6
Document Page
Somerset Safeguarding Adults Board, which was responsible in providing adult healthcare
services were found effective in providing adult care to mental health patients.
Headway, a brain injury support organization, which contained qualified psychiatrists, who were
competent to treat mental victims.
NHS trust- Somerset council works in collaboration with NHS trust so that the council gets extra
support while carrying out their medical care assistance to different mentally unstable patients.
NGOs- NGOs primarily helped the patient’s family when they could not gather adequate support
from the governmental healthcare institutions.
Private medical centers- Private medical centers offered good medical treatment to patients
having mental health injury. However, they offered expensive medical treatments that cannot be
taken by most of the families residing there (Lucke-Wold et al., 2018). Additionally, mental
health care patients require regular care so affording such expensive treatments on a daily basis
could not be approved by the patient’s family.
LO 3
3.1 Explain the approaches and interventions available to support individuals with specific
needs
Health Care Sector needs to resort to look into the needs and requirements of the patients in
order to deliver effective services. In accordance with the case scenario, it can be said that the
healthcare organization named NHS trust, Somerset council and local drug failed to respond to
the individuals who are barely complaint and leading a chaotic life. Besides, it has also been
found out that it failed to provide an integrated response to the needs of Tom, who was suffering
from brain injury. It seems that the healthcare organization had lack of professional curiosity.
Henceforth, it is recommended for NHS trust, Somerset council and local drug to take resort to
professional curiosity. It is crucial for the healthcare organization to train its management as well
the employee team to investigate into the health conditions of each patient and look for solutions
accordingly. Besides, from the analysis of the case study, it has been seen that the healthcare
organization had been missing subtleties. It failed to assess the deteriorating mental health of

Tom. Henceforth, it needs to look into the mental conditions of the patients in order to keep track
on their deteriorating health conditions and take initiatives accordingly.
It has also been found out that the healthcare organization failed to integrate the assessment
processes, which was experienced by Tom. It is needed for the healthcare organization to provide
support or assistance to patients in order to avoid extreme consequences. It is crucial for the
healthcare organization to take resort to a professional led multi agency approach, which was
seen to be entirely absent as gate keeping criteria. It would enable the healthcare organization to
deliver effective services to the patients in the future.
3.2 Evaluate the effectiveness of intervention strategies for an individual with specific
need(s)
The above mentioned case can be used by the healthcare organization, Somerset as the basis of
training and the learning events for commissioners as well as practitioners around working with
people suffering from brain injuries in order to enable the organization to look into the matter
seriously and form strategies as well as approaches to avoid such extreme consequences in the
future. It is essential for the organization to look into the needs of the patients and assess their
mental conditions. This would enable the healthcare organization to take initiatives in order to
resist patients from being vulnerable and hence would enable them in bringing improvements in
the patients. Besides, they need to take resort to professional curiosity in order to come into
contact with the patients as well as their families when the formers are vulnerable to damage
(Mantell and Jennings, 2016). These interactions are effective in presenting crucial opportunities
for protection. Besides, it is effective since responding to opportunities would enable them to
recognize the vulnerabilities of the patients and take actions accordingly.
3.3 Discuss the potential impact of emerging developments on support for individuals with
specific needs.
Different development activities would take place in the industry of health and social care
service can be seen. This is effective since it enables the healthcare organizations in protecting
patients from challenges coming from the society in which they reside. The government has
passed various numerous acts as well as regulations including Mental Health Act of 2005 and
Health and Social Care Act of 2008 in order to enable healthcare organizations give effective
services to patients in order to save themselves from taking extreme actions. Besides, this would
8

also enable the healthcare organizations in giving priority to problems of people and provide then
with best initiatives (Harris et al., 2016). Besides, this would also lead healthcare organizations
provide services to the needy at low cost. Moreover, different initiatives each at individual level
are taken by the society as well through the organization of charities, donations, sponsorships etc
for helping people who are in need. Building trust seems to be another vital requirement in order
to develop relationships with people having specific needs for providing healthcare services.
