WEEK-4: BUILDING RAPPORT
Rapport building means to develop a bond between the patient and the healthcare
staff through which the patient finds it comfortable to say everything.
It is necessary to develop a rapport between the patient and the nurse because then
it is easy to understand the patient’s psychology and other problems too. There are
certain things which need to be taken care of in order to maintain the dignity of a
professional and also to gain the confidence of the patient. The first impression over
the patient, duration of the patient interview, responding to the patient’s queries,
collaboration with the patient and when and how to close the interview are important
factors to be considered during building a rapport
This discussion was helpful as we learned how to interact with the patient and how to
react to the queries of the patient also how to resolve them, particularly so that the
patient's trust is maintained.
The methods of developing a rapport were well explained and were practical enough
to understand.

Non-verbal communication is an essential way of developing good relations with the
patient as it helps in building the confidence of the patient in the caregiver. Certain
non- verbal communications such as facial expressions, body language, etc. are
used. An acronym SOLER is used in this case which stands for (S- "sit squarely",
O-"open posture", L-"lean towards the other", E-"eye contact", R-"relax" to use the

communication skill is helpful for nurses because it engages the patient’s attention
towards the fact that he/she is being taken care of by the staff.

WEEK-6: DISPLAYING EMPATHY
Empathy means to understand one’s feeling without judging him/her. This skill is of
utmost importance for the nurses because they are supposed to listen to all the
problems of the patients without being judgemental (Ançel,2006). This seminar was
useful in making me understand the difference between sympathy and empathy as
this is the topic which was always misunderstood by me. Sympathy means to feel
something for someone whereas empathy means to feel along with the other person.
The group selected unique examples to make the audience clear about the concepts
of empathy and sympathy. Although certain authentic things were lacking in the
discussion which made the ideas less credible to the audience

WEEK-7: ACTIVE LISTENING
By active listening is meant that one should listen to the patient's questions without
any interference, judgments, disturbances, etc. for me this topic proved to be useful
because I understood how to phrase sentences when in front of the patient. As this is
the most difficult task for me to frame the sentences so that it does not hurt the
patient’s sentiments. Some examples were given which taught the way of talking
such as starting the sentence with “it looks like you are worried about…”
By this discussion, I understood the difference between hearing and listening. The
presentation was impressive because it had all the things in it and the time was
managed accurately.

People who are assertive in nature listen to other's opinions respectfully and also

WEEK-9: CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Conflict resolution refers to the method of solving a particular problem or to address
the problem and find out its solution. While working in any setup the conflicts are the
most unavoidable issue which leads to certain problems. This is an important quality
to develop because this cools down the situation and maintains the quality of the
setup and also provides job satisfaction to others.
To resolve the conflicts by using empathy the other is learned by me in this seminar.
The research work of the group was up to the mark and they presented it very well.
Although there were some errors in the pronunciations, they could have practiced
many times to improve over it.
