Introduction
Listening is the ability to receive any message from the speaker and interpreting the
message through the process of communication. Morozova, (2013) mentioned that listening
is the key aspect of effective communication between two persons. Without the listening skill
there are high chances of miscommunication or wrong interpretation of the actual message.
Hence, listening is an important factor for any kind of communication in the business world
and also in the personal world (Park, Reber & Chon, 2016). The study will also discuss some
important facts about listening and its importance in healthcare. It will describe the important
contents of the Julian Treasure on the topic five different ways to listen better to make the
communication effective and meaningful.
Discussion
Rational for the topic
It is important to understand the listening skill effectively for communication. As
mentioned by Julian Treasure, people are losing the ability of listening. He also mentioned
that, people use approximately sixty percent of their communication in listening however,
people are not good listeners. A common person can only retain twenty-five percent of what
they hear from others (Youtube.com, 2020). This is a general fact about the entire world of
the human being. Hence, the topic is selected for this study. This talk show will enable the
listener to understand the importance of sound which is the basic component of listening
skill. Hamouda, (2013) in this regard mentioned that, it is a physical process that provide the
user to become more focused or attentive to the subject matter of the speaker. The study also
mentioned that the average of all human being spent 45% in listening, 30% in speaking, 16%
in reading and 9% in writing. On the other hand, Aryana, & Apsari, (2018) mentioned
various purpose of enhancing the listening skills. It includes – paying attention to the

message of the communication procedure, avoid distraction, gaining accuracy in
understanding the key point, critical assessment of what is being said, observe various non-
verbal communications, show concern about others, and providing encouragement to the
speaker (Dang et al., 2017). Hence, the study selected the topic mentioned by Julian Treasure
to focus on listening skill which is also a sign of positive health.
Key points
Julian Treasure started the discussion by defining the term ‘sound’ and its importance
in communication. According to him, it is a mental process of extraction. Human being use
come easy and ‘cool’ techniques to perform this activity. One of these activities is known as
pattern recognition. The other technique mentioned is differentiating. He mentioned that,
people listen to differences, people discount the sounds that tend to remain the same. One
important factor mentioned by Treasure is using filters for listening. The filters refer to the
medium that take the listener from all the sounds to the particular one that he or she want to
listen. Most of the listers are unconscious about the use of filters at the time of using it during
any kind of listening activities. He also mentioned that sound makes a person realize the
space. If a person closes eyes, he or she will be able to understand the size of the room from
the reverberation along with the bouncing vibration present in that room. Treasure also
mentioned that the technical advancement of video recording is the reason for missing
listening skills. Along with this, the noisy audio and visual cacophony of the outer world is
also stealing the ability of effective listening from human being. People become impatient
and forgot the procedure oration. Treasure addressed communication as an artistic procedure
with personal broadcasting. Hence, losing the listening ability is a crucial problem as it is the
basic step for accessing understanding. Finally, Treasure introduces the five tools to enhance
the listening skill that includes – silence, the mixer, savoring, listening positions, and
acronym. Remaining silent for 3 minutes daily is an effective exercise for listening skill.

Second is visit to the places with multiple sounds (example – lake) and recognizing all the
sounds. Third exercise is savoring that refers to enjoying the rhythm of all the sounds. Fourth
is the most important off all the exercises that is to moving the listening positions to
understand the appropriateness of the message. Final exercise is acronym that is considering
the self in the position of the speaker (Youtube.com, 2020).
Relation with personal level
This discussion is quite relatable for all the human being want to live a healthy and
quality life. Hwang et al., (2016) mentioned that effective communication with office
colleagues or friends or any relative. For example, as a student, inefficient listening skill can
hamper the attaining of any lecture at the University. Hence, I completely agree with all the
key points mentioned by Julian Treasure during the talk show. It also enriched the knowledge
about how to improve the listening ability to lead a healthy communication with others. As
mentioned in the course or role concepts, effective listening skill and effective
communication is also one of the basic requirements of human being and personal wellness
(Garg, et al., 2017).
Comparing the topic with personal belief and philosophy
As mentioned, listening and communication skills are the basic components of
healthy living of an individual being. Hence, the topic mentioned Julian Treasure is
accelerating the concept of personal well being and not becoming a hindrance for healthy
living. All the mentioned aspects within the talk show enhances the ideologies of effective
components of healthy living. For example, Žnidaršiè & Zupan, (2019) mentioned that to
make the communication effective the listener must pay attention to the face and position of
the speaker. This is the evidence for Treasures speaking about the fourth exercise that is
listening position. To put it simply, it refers to positioning the listeners eyes on the face of the

speaker from different direction for appropriately adopting the key messages delivered by the
speaker. Ahmad (2016) on the other hand, mentioned that, exercising the listening skill
through differentiating various sounds from any particular place. Moreover, it can be said
that, the selected topic is somehow feeding the personal beliefs and philosophies to make it
more prominent and useful for further study.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be said that, the message provided by Julian Treasure is very
powerful for all the people want to live a healthy and positive life. Combining the concepts
made by Treasure, teaching the effectiveness of listening skill at the initial stage of life (early
childhood) infuses the sense of healthy living from the basic stage of life. The discussion
teaches the people to be attentive for hearing the message of the speaker with a relaxing
attitude. Similarly, the listener must keep an open mind to adopt all the contents of the
speaker. The listers will gain the ability to picturize the contents of the speaker by enhancing
the listening skill as mentioned by Treasure. It is worth to be mentioned in this regard, that
the first exercise mentioned by Treasure is remaining silent for 3 minutes to enhance the
listening skill. It is a powerful comment on the entire procedure of communication.
Remaining silent more three minutes or more, provides the scope to the speaker to complete
their statement. It leads to a healthy communication practice between two or more individual
being. Finally, it is mentioned in the role concept that, effective communication is one of the
basic component of healthy living of an individual being.
