Evaluating PCMH and E-Health Strategies in Healthcare Delivery

1HEALTHCARE SYSTEM DELIVERY MODEL
The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) refers to the care delivery process in which
the patient receive the primary care from the primary care physician so that they can have
treatment whenever they need it (ACP, 2019). On the other hand the, the Ministry of health of
Saudi Arabia introduces a combination of information technology and electronic communication
in the health care named National E-health strategy (Ministry Of Health, 2019). This E-health
strategy is based mainly on the patient centered care. In this essay, the different aspects of the
PCMH and E-health strategy are discussed.
In Saudi Arabia, the PCMH model is also used in various health care setting for
providing care to the patients. In the Al Baha hospital of Saudi Arabia a study of conducted in
which 51.95% of male population and 48.05% female population were participated. The male
population of Saudi Arabia received PCMH care model more than that of the female population
of Saudi Arabia. It was also observed that, the most of the uneducated population of the country
had received the treatment through this care model and the amount was almost 44.63% (Algamdi
& Jhonson, 2014). The study of Almalki et al. (2018) also showed that the PCMH model had
improved the patient outcome and reduces the treatment costs. There are a few challenges that
can give trouble to the implementation of PCMH model in Saudi Arabia. A high level of
education is required for the patients so that they can first come to the primary care physicians.
Moreover, the total PCMH requires a few year to get success and it is difficult to maintain the
process with a very less outcome (Bresnick, 2014).
The E-health strategy of Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia is very effective for the
general population of Saudi Arabia. The introduction of E-health strategy in the health care
sector of Saudi Arabia will allow the patients to access the required health information from their
preferred channel such as telephone, sms, web or booklet. In addition, they can get health care

services in the convenient location by using the web portal. By using this service they will have
faster diagnosis and the waiting time will be reduced. By using their own portal the general
population have the power of studying their own diagnostic and medical information at any time.
This system has reduced the problem of patient scheduling in the health care sectors of Saudi
Arabia (Ministry Of Health, 2019). The E-health strategy in Saudi Arabia also faces a few
challenges. Among them, the technological challenges, confidentiality and privacy challenges,
behavior and organizational challenges are in the top of the list (Alsulame, Khalifa & Househ ,
2015).
Hence, it can be concluded that, the PCMH model of health care delivery and E-Health
strategy of the Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia, both are very important in delivering care to
the patients. However, there are always a few factors that make the process of implementation
very difficult in the health care sector. In spite of various difficulties, the care giving models
provide good quality care to the patients.
