1ROLE OF GOVERNANCE IN HEALTHCARE ORGANIZATIONS
Introduction
The study is focused essentially towards investigating the role of governance in
determining the performances of Healthcare Organizations. The governing board, the supporting
role of internal consulting and CEO performance intervention strategies are the specific focus
areas for the study. The combined effort of all these factors towards determining performance
would be analysed.
Analysis of internal consulting
Internal consulting is an important functional aspect of healthcare organizations. It
provides essential support to the governing board of the HCOs. The functional aspects can
broadly be divided into three parts. Firstly, the support provided to the entire organization,
Secondly, supporting projects for improvements. Thirdly, supporting capital investment reviews.
The internal consulting also assists operating units to identify and subsequently prioritize the
capital opportunities (White & Griffith, 2010). They also develop capital requests and implement
and integrate the various programs. In essence the internal consulting is very much concerned
with bringing about changes in the facilities, equipment and the other work processes. Internal
consultancy also interacts effectively with the clients of the HCOs to help them concerning their
requirements. In essence, the internal consulting looks after many of the essential functions that
are significant focuses for the Governing board. The consulting helps the governing body to
make better decisions in regards to the effective running of the board. The internal consulting
through its various functions help to improve the performance of the significant operational areas
of the organization. Their functions are important for maintaining proper coordination between
the governing board and the operations of the HCOs.

Evaluation of governing board functions
The governing board is one of the highest decision making bodies of the healthcare
organizations. Some of the major functional areas of the organization are maintaining and
managing capabilities, establishing the values, mission and visions of the organization,
approving corporate strategies, ensuing the clinical care quality, assessing and monitoring
performances against the budgets and plans and improving performances of the boards. There are
significant sub-functions of the boards within these mentioned functions. In essence, the board is
concerned with the effective management of the higher level functional aspects concerned with
the HCO. Maintaining the management capability is one of the most important functions of the
board. The board selects the CEO and after a certain period of time reviews the contribution
made by the person towards the organization. Within this functional aspect there is also the
formation of the policies to recruit, develop and compensate the managers. The governing board
takes care of the growth oriented factors such as expansion or closure, affiliation to local or
regional governing bodies and maintaining effective relations with the various significant
stakeholders (Olvera et al., 2017). Hence, the larger functional effectiveness of the organization
depends on the performance of the board.
Comparison and contrast of CEO performance intervention
One of the most important approaches for CEO performance intervention is evaluation of
contribution of the CEO towards the HCOs growth. In this intervention approach the growth
statistics that have been achieved by the organization during the times of the CEO are assessed.
This helps to understand the effectiveness of the CEO towards the growth and development of
the organization. A significant CEO performance intervention approach is to understand the
contribution of the CEO towards the vision of the organization. How much the CEO has been

able to positively affect the corporate strategy of the organization is an important measure. In
contrast the human resources approach of CEO intervention focuses on how many effective
personnel, mainly concerning the executive level the CEO has been able to recruit. The question
in this case are: 1. Whether the CEO has recruited the right people? And 2. Whether the people
truly have the potential to perform. Another important measure of CEO performance is capital
oriented. In contrast to the previous methods, this method assesses the performance of the CEO
in regards to the effective capital allocation that he has done in regards to the various areas of the
HCO. These different types of CEO performance intervention can also be used altogether to
form a more holistic value analysis of the CEO.
Biblical principles
The biblical understanding of people problems can help to form significant understanding
of the functional aspects of the various essential departments of a healthcare organization.
Concerning the biblical approach to the management of healthcare organization, the leadership
needs to know how to resolve conflicts within people. The leadership should have an outlook of
servant leadership approach. With regards to work ethics the approach towards managing the
people and their problems should be as if the organization is working towards the will of God.
The people of the organization should have effective communication levels that can help in
engaging with people and learning their problems. It is also important that teamwork is
maintained. In this case the organization should focus towards being peace with even those that
have different beliefs. Wisdom is required for which there should be effective connection with
god for being in the righteous path. Accountability is a strong Christian principle and is
important to be accountable to the people that are being served and to God. Empathy and

Compassion is an important factor. There should be dedication towards the medical service that
is being provided.
Arguments
According to Tazzyman et al. (2019) there is a need for revalidation in all levels of
medical practice in healthcare organizations to continuously live up to the standards of
performance. Keeping this in mind the internal consulting should work in constant coordination
with the organizational governance to ensure that the doctors live up to standards of medical
practice. This would actually help in effectively enhancing all the other significant functional
areas of HCO operations. In essence there is the need for the formation of a team that would be
focused towards effectively coordinating the functions of the governance and the internal
consulting.
Conclusion
It is important that the governance board and the internal consulting works hand in hand
in an HCO. The progress of the functions of the internal consulting should always be effectively
communicated with the governing boards for maintaining coordination effectiveness.
