INTRODUCTION
Safeguarding children and young people is a prime responsibility of health and social care
organizations. Healthcare policies and procedures of these organizations play important role in
promoting physical and mental well-being of children and young adults in UK communities
(Abdallah, 2014). The organization selected for the present study is Kingdom Baptist Church which
is a social organization located in London. The church plays important role in helping communities
including Baptist churches and individuals to reach their maximum health potential. It is following
the different policies of Baptists Church Group to deliver safeguarding services to both children and
young people who are facing different types of harm and seeking protection (Berryman and et.al.,
2013).The first part of the present report is relating to features portfolio to provide evaluation of
situational analysis of various aspects of health and care services of Kingdom Baptist Church in
UK. In addition to this, the report also analyses the standards of services of the social organization
to meet the expectations of individuals of community. In the first section, the objectives that will
cover are key issues related to services, areas of improvements to resolve issues, suggestions for
improvement in lacking areas etc. Besides this, the report also analyses the current services of
Baptist together by using a process map. The second part of the report features reflective account of
the study. This section will include opinion of the induction process, skills required during the
placement, need of team working in success, suitability of improvement tools with the suggested
areas etc.
TASK 1: PORTFOLIO
Overview of Kingdom Baptist Church
Baptist churches are integral part of UK communities. Baptists form the largest families of
hope and faith. They firmly believe in the concept of families. It has been observed that in Baptist
families everybody are treated on the grounds of equality without any discrimination among all the
members (Baptist Together, 2016). Each local church including Kingdom Baptist Church employs
their own leaders or ministers to teach and preach individuals of UK communities for enhancing
their quality of life. One of the most important roles of Baptist Churches is to safeguard
communities.
Situational analysis of current services of Kingdom Baptist Church
The present service of Baptist Church is safeguarding that means protection of adults and
children from harm and abuse. It is including wide range of activities which aim is promoting each
and every person basic right to be safe and secure. Baptist Church is ensuring to maintain safe
environment for all service users. There are different policies develops by church itself for children,
adults and young people (Angeles and et.al., 2014).The various safeguarding policies are adopting
by all churches across the world including Kingdom Baptist Church and it is following at the

workplace. In this context, it has moral duty of Kingdom Baptist Church is to ensure that it has
delivered and promoting safeguarding as well as welfare of the children who are suffering from any
kind of harm.
As per the policies and procedures of safeguarding of children and young people, it has
responsibility of Kingdom Baptist Church to recognize that whether the children and young people
are facing abuse or any kind of harm or not. After this, a procedure has applied to allegations of
abuse and the protections of these vulnerable people (Burgess and Radnor, 2013).It should be a
responsibility of Kingdom Baptist Church to provide safe environment for children and young
people, determine those people who are suffering from any kind of harm or abuse and taking
appropriate actions so that children and young people are keep always safe from harm.
But, in actual situation, Kingdom Baptist Church has not properly followed safeguarding
policy for protecting children and young people. It has not treated all children and young people
equally at the time of delivering services related to protecting (Christie and et.al., 2012).The reason
behind unequal treatment with vulnerable people is making discrimination on the basis of
disabilities, gender, age, culture, nation etc. This type of situations are creating the
misunderstanding between the service users.
The voice tone of leaders of Kingdom Baptist Church during the conversation with
vulnerable people have not appropriate. The pick of volume of voice of leaders i.e. Baptists has
always high and rude with service users. Their body languages with children and young people are
not too good and this thing has negatively affected the behaviour of vulnerable people (Coughlin,
Reimer and Mehler, 2011). It shows the improper training of how to behave and deal to the children
and young people who are seeking safeguarding due to some reasons.
On the other hand, Kingdom Baptist Church Baptist are some times neglecting basic needs
of young people and children which has affected the development and health of them. Along with
this, few Baptists are emotional and they are showing emotions with those vulnerable people who
are facing dementia and any other physical or mental harm (Davis, Sevdalis and Vincent, 2012).
This thing has stopped the leaders to avoid required treatments and it leads to adverse effects on
behaviour of young people and children.
Beside this, when some services users are rejecting or resist taking treatment or food than

has included hitting, poisoning, throwing the objects on them, shaking or burning. Therefore, from
the above situational analysis, it has been identified that Kingdom Baptist Church has unable to
effectively implement safeguarding policy for children and young people.
The improper or lack of communication between the leaders of Kingdom Baptist Church
and children and young people have affected the implementation of safeguarding framework.

leader, change in HR policies, change in behaviour of employees, maintain dignity and privacy of

recommended options for improvement are as follows.
Training: It is a primary opportunity increase the knowledge base of the staff members in the
organizations. Although, it is true that because of attending training sessions, employees are missing
out on work time and it has created delay in completion of work. But, it is more important for
workers carrier development so that they can deliver particular services to the users in appropriate
manner (Harte and et.al., 2011). The same thing is applying Kingdom Baptist Church because the
situational analysis has shown that leaders of Kingdom Baptist Church are not having the
knowledge about how to treat with the children and young people.
Children are requiring emotional attachment but the leaders are showing strict behaviour
towards them. It has created a fear in their mind and it has affected their growth and development.

It makes the decisions of top management more uniform and predictable. In the context of Kingdom
Baptist Church, the important information has been revealed that leaders are doing discrimination
with children and young people on the basis of different aspects. It has developed a negative
feeling in vulnerable people towards each other. It has also affected the delivery of safeguarding
policies (Powell and Davies, 2012). So, to resolve these issues, Kingdom Baptist Church has be
change or develop new HR policies. Along with this, church has to included more important

recruitment process has not that much effective as compare to other Baptist Church groups. The
result of this is the leaders are not able to deliver right safeguarding services to children and young
people.
For resolving this problem, Kingdom Baptist Church has needed to bring the improvements
in selection and recruitment process by writing proper job description. Along with this, an

more important. Communication gap between them has created a misunderstanding situation some

communication gap between Baptists and children and young people (Porter and Lee, 2013). This
gap has also found between the team members of the organization. This thing has affected the
delivery of safeguarding services and team working spirit. Hence, it is needed to resolve this
problem by adopting different methods of enhancing communication between the team members
and service users. For this, Kingdom Baptist Church can organized formal meetings every day so
that important information can be shared between the team members (Smith and et.al., 2011). Along
with this, by discussion with the children and young people on regular basis, their needs and wants
regarding safeguarding can be find out and fulfil it. It will help in resolving the conflicts between
the Baptists of Kingdom Baptist Church.

customer information. It is company responsibility to keep secure, safe and do not share the data

information. For this, organization has to develop a written confidentiality policies and procedures.

different methods such as distributing newsletters, posting posters neat the hospitals, schools

TASK 2: REFLECTIVE ACCOUNT
As a health and social volunteer in Kingdom Baptist church, I am required to possess certain
skills that are very essential to safeguard children and young people of local communities. The
church hired me as a volunteer as I was a previous member of Baptist community in London.
Before joining the board of Kingdom Baptist Church, I was well aware of concerns and issues faced
by children and young people of UK based communities. However, I developed more clarity on the
subject after becoming a part of social care team of the church. Kingdom Baptist Church is
committed to provide safe environment for activities with children and young people. In order to
safeguard children and young adults of communities, the church exercises effective hiring
procedures to select and recruit right candidates for the post of volunteer. These people are then
trained and supported. It is very cardinal to adopt a sound and robust appointment procedures and
support systems for those volunteers who work with children and young people.
Besides this, the church also ensures that only right candidates are hired in order to provide
greater safety to children and young people. Therefore, hiring procedures of Kingdom Church are
very stringent and include several checks before appointing volunteers to work with children and
young people. Management of church conducted DDC check on me before my appointment. DDC
stand for Due Diligence Checking which is a service availed by the Baptist Union of Great Britain
to check the background of employees before hiring them in their organizations (DBS Checks,
2016). Kingdom Baptist Church conducts this check to make safe recruitment decisions. I observed

that the church has identified good recruitment procedures as vital measures to ensure safety and
security of children and young people from potential harm. However, no written description was
ever given to me for the post of safeguarding volunteer. The church has provided me information
about skills which are required to deal with kids and young people during induction. As per the
church's safeguarding policy, I continued to developed skills and knowledge on various aspects of
protecting children and young people from potential harm.
I came to know about four kinds of potential harm which include physical, emotional, sexual
and spiritual abuse, neglect etc. I learned that physical abuse entails practices like hitting, beating,
burning, scalding poisoning, drowning or causing any physical harm to child by their family
members, teachers or carers. I learned that physical abuse can negatively impact the behaviour of
children. In addition to this, it can lead to poor emotional and educational development of children.
Talking about emotional abuse, I learned that this kind of abuse refers to constant ill treatment to a
child that hampers his emotional development. It involves conveying to kids that they are useless,
worthless, inappropriate or less valued. I came to know that emotional abuse causes potential harm
to self-esteem and mental well-being of children. I also developed my understanding about sexual
abuse and neglect during the training session. Sexual abuse entails forcing a child or a young person
to take part in sexual activity. The act may be either penetrative or non penetrative. I came to know
that children who are sexually abused exhibit broad range of behaviour which entails sexual
knowledge or behaviour which is inappropriate according to their age. Besides this, I also learned
from training modules about entities that are capable of causing harm to children and young people.
I learned that person who bring harm to children ad young people are often familiar individuals
such as parent, teacher, siblings, family friends, relatives or neighbour. In addition to this, these
individuals may belong to any social, economic and culture background or ethnicity.
In addition to this, I also comprehended that it is the duty of each volunteer of Kingdom
Baptist Church to protect children and young people from physical, emotional and sexual abuse as
well as neglect by promptly responding to their concerns. During training I learned how to suspect
and report any case of child abuse and take necessary actions to safeguard children. Also, during
training courses I came to understand ways of in which children can be harmed I learned to
identifying signs of abuse among children and young people. The church has provided list of
indicators which is suggestive to abuse among children such as unexplained injuries, wounds on
those part of body that not prone to injuries, injuries which have not been treated and alteration in
mood or behaviour. In addition to this, the sight of neglect such as inadequate care, untreated wound
and under nourishment is also included in the list. My role in this was to report cases of abuse by
observing the sins of abuse. As a volunteer I am also responsible to report potential indicators of
neglect and abuse to concerned authority of Kingdom Baptist Church. Besides this, I also learned to

I developed understanding by observing sudden changes in behaviour of children, their physical
appearance, emotional and mental development to identify whether the child is being abused or not.
I also make sure to observe adults interaction with child and young people to identify case of abuse
in the given context.
In addition to this, I am also responsible to promote welfare of children and young people by
following safeguarding policy and practices of Kingdom Baptist Church. Management of the
church provided me clear guidelines on how to respond to concerns of children and young people
when they disclose that they are being potentially harmed by other individuals. However, all the
volunteers are held accountable for not abiding by organizational policies and procedures while
dealing with children and young people of Baptist communities. I have been trained on what needed
to be done when a child expresses concern. This includes creating a safe environment in which
children and young people can comfortably share their concerns, listening to them attentively,
allowing them to express freely without any interruption, reassuring them, explaining them about
what happens next and taking serious actions to support them.
On the contrary I learned about things which are required to be avoided while responding to
concerns of children and young people. These include showing disapproval for abusive behaviour
of others which panicked kids or young children, pushing them for further information and offering
false re-assurance (Response to Concerns, 2016). The church provides procedures for responding to
children and young people concerns in a written format which makes its very easy for volunteers to
take appropriate actions to confront kids and protect them from harm. In order to achieve objects of
Kingdom Baptist church all volunteers are required to work in teams. I learned that team work is
the most effective way of getting things done. While working in teams I begin to develop more
creativity. I comprehended the fact that combining different perspectives from other team members
is more effective in responding to concerns of children and young people. In addition to this, I also
learned new skills while working in team as teamwork maximises knowledge sharing at my
workplace. I also learned to combine my skills with that of other team members as teamwork
provide great opportunity to blend complimentary strengths of every team member. I also learned
conflict resolution while working in team. I observed that conflicts are inevitable part of team
working as people from different backgrounds, working styles and habits come together. Besides
this, varied viewpoints may produce resentment that can turn into conflicts. Therefore, I learned
skill of conflict resolution at first hand while working with other social volunteers. Apart from this,
I learned that working in team is very important for achieving the objectives of Kingdom Baptist
Church which are primarily focused to safeguard children and young people of UK based
communities. I also learned to think out of the box while resolving the issues faced by children who

exhibit signs of any form of abuse. I consult with other team members in order to decide
appropriate actions that can be taken to protect children and young people who seek support. I
usually brainstorm with co workers to produce better ideas top implement safeguarding policy of
the church.
It is when I comprehended the concepts of various theories that are linked with team
building and team working. For instance Belbin's theory of team roles. With the help of this theory I
identified my roles in the team of volunteers at my workplace. It has been observed that most
people have two or three team roles in which they are most comfortable with. On the bass of my
understanding of nine roles which are proposed in Belbin's theory, I recognised my role as team
worker, coordinator, shaper and implementer. I always helped other team members to help others
whenever required (Belbin Team Roles, 2015). As a coordinator I focused on team's objectives and
encourage other volunteers to work effectively to protect children and young people from abuse. As
a shaper, I always made sure that team members do not lose focus and keep them motivated to
achieve organizational goals. I also tried to overcome work related problems of self and other
volunteers in an effective manner. As an implementer I always made sure to turn ideas into actions
and properly organized my and team members work. In addition to team working theory I also
studied the concepts of different behaviour change theories which explains important aspects of
behaviour change among individuals. For example with the help of principles social learning theory
I developed my understanding of behavioural responses of children and young people against their
social environment. I observed that children who are physically or sexually abused by any familiar
person hesitate to disclose. Therefore, by closely watching their behaviour I tried to identify the
suspect who is responsible for distorted mental state of children and young people. In addition to
this, behavioural change theories proved very useful in developing effective teaching methods to
educate parents of children who experience any form of abuse. I applied the learning of these
theories while responding to concern of children and young people. Apart from this, I tried to
exercise sensible practices of ensuring safety while working with children and young people.
Kingdom Baptist church make efforts to introduce procedures and practices that become habit and
nature of volunteers to safeguard children and young people.
Other than this I also make sure to observe the behaviour of other volunteers while they
work with children and young people who are victims of abuse. As per the guidelines of Safe to
Grow which is resource book for all Baptist churches in UK ever volunteer is required to
understand safeguard policies in order to implement them in the best possible manner. I try to
maintain confidentiality of children and young people while responding to their concerns. I
observed that maintenance of privacy is very essential to build trust of children who are often
frightened and panicked due to abuse. I also make sure to communicate effectively with children
