Reflection of Event
What
One day in the morning when I was on duty in the medical ward I came along with an incident in
which there was an allegation of physical assault with a patient. The patient was suffering from
the Schizophrenia. He claimed that I assaulted him physically.
After hearing the charges, I tried to understand it. On one hand I knew about the seriousness of
the allegations if it was true, and therefore I was also aware of the potential harm that allegations
of a lie could be the reason for the professional integrity of 'special' which was involved in it. I
was obviously aware of Lee's ability to confuse illusions, but I was also impressed with the
apparent truth of his memory and by the fact that he was crying while he was remembering
(Nicole MN et al., 2004).
On balance, I believed the status of their account. That is why I felt that there is my ethical and
professional duty to communicate the complaint to the Senior Ward Sister. After the discussion
period with Ward Sister, I filled an accident report form (IR1), which was then sent to hospital
management.
After the incident, I used to experience the period of self-examination for a long time. I was
worried that if I was inadvertently in favor of a false accusation and had considered more
specifically the results of 'special' involved. After the period of acute reflection, I concluded that
due to my professional duty to do my best to the patient, I had to take corrective action, rather it
was also that in these circumstances the patient's lawyer Was acting in the form of That seemed
completely appropriate (Brooke C et al. 2007).

Reflection Paper
Ward's sister's response seemed completely appropriate, I believe she went and talked to herself
and determined that there was enough evidence to make the incident reporting (IR1) suitable.
This made me very convinced; Ward Sister also discussed the moral and implications of the
situation with me, both of which were professionally helpful and thoughtful, because she could
see what I should do in these circumstances.
So What
The theoretical elements of analysis of this situation are simple. Jasper, in his Analytical Series
analysis (Jasper M 2007), acknowledges that part of the responsibility of being a professional
businessman is to ensure that you can best care for your patients or customers. In the analysis of
similar situation, the author is clear in his evaluation that the professional duty of the nurse is to
share such reports of potential patient abuse with his immediate superiority.
Even if the patient is due to 'low potential' or 'suspicious reliability' (Jasper M 2007 page 36),
then they should be considered commercially 'weak' and more, less, security should be offered.
A moral analysis can suggest that the nurse should invoke the principle of non-materialism,
which was often derived from the quoted dictation of Hippocrates, stating that there should be no
"first loss". (Carrick P. 2000) This theory pointed out those health professionals should ensure
that their patients are not harmed or harmed (van Ufelen JGZ et al. 2008).
I had considered the possibility of talking to 'special' in an informal capacity, but came to the
conclusion that there was nothing that they could say that would change the proper way of
action. It agrees with Tschudin's opinion which analyzes similar situations (Tschudin, V 2003).

This level of analysis gave me deep insight into the situation and strengthened my initial
conclusions regarding proper and appropriate action.
Now What
Given the fact that Lee had reported the potential case of misbehavior, it is perfectly reasonable
that it will be examined properly. Sister's actions also seemed to be appropriate and proportionate
to remove 'special' from Lee's care. This work may have been considered more appropriate to
suspend 'special' than this, but in situations when someone is dealing with a confused and mental
patient and is an important element of uncertainty about the truth of the allegations, then it Can
be considered inappropriate and inappropriate adverse for 'Special' (Mcmillan J. 2005).
At the time of reporting the incident, I apologized to Lee and assured me that such condition will
not be allowed to happen again. I think that this was also a commercially appropriate course of
action, because it not only did not indicate a professional responsibility for Lee, but also
demonstrated the fact that I was taking my complaint seriously And I'm sorry that this has
happened (Kozier, B et al. 2008).
When analyzed in the overview, I was effectively with two possible outcomes of the situation.
Either I believed that Lee's story is probably true, or I did not. This leads to a deeper analysis and
in the words of the Cruess and Cruess, the ability to conduct a student's development with a deep
and thorough understanding of the total situation is evaluated in the 'expert scholar', which is a
concept often 'professional intuition '(Baillie L. 2005). Cruise et al suggests that this 'professional
intuition' is considered to be better as a 'professional expertise', which is generally built and
received in years of experience and when tested in a clinical environment. So, it's a completely
stronger concept (Cruess SR et al 2007). Reflection on this situation, along with guidance from

Ward Sister, has helped me to understand the main elements of this situation completely. If I had
to face such a situation, then instead of reflecting on the length of time after the event, I would
feel more confident in dealing with the situation. Such an analysis has helped me to realize that,
while citing Sean, it is in a way advancing from the development of professional and rule-bound
behavior and that they have to work in the world of uncertainty and in a holistic manner Enables
to see problems and work properly (Schon, DA (1987).
Analysis of current media article
The newspaper article that is chosen by me is written by Lisa Esposito in U.S News published on
January 18, 2017, titled Nurses Face More Violence From Hospital Patients;
https://health.usnews.com/wellness/articles/2017-01-18/nurses-face-more-violence-from-
hospital-patients. This article is based on the violence faced by the nurses from the patients of
hospitals. Nurses and other medical staff face increasingly violence from the patients (they are
trying to help) of the hospitals. This violence may be of various kinds such as verbal abuse,
physical assault, and false claim of mental and physical assault. According to this article nurses
raised their voice for the prevention of the violence against them. They said there is a need of
regulation to prevent us from the violence which we are facing in our daily life while serving the
patients. The violence against nurses makes them away from their assignment as they themselves
become the patients. On the false claim of mentally or physically assault the nurses face legal
action by the authority and they have to prove themselves innocent. It takes more time and
nurses become the victim of stress, depression, and anxiety. Then they themselves become the
patient and need treatment. Hospitals are extremely considered about the misbehavior of the staff
and it takes strict action against the involve staff. But when a false claim makes medical staff
suffering from the legal action of hospital it raise the concern about the social and ethical values.

Reflection Paper
The society does not accept this kind of inhuman behavior of the patients and the hospital.
Sometimes the authority of the hospital takes legal strict action against the medical staff on a
false claim by the patients. The hospital needs to investigate the matter first before taking any
action against the medical staff. From the history till present these kinds of practices are in
exercise and due to this many medical staffs have committed suicide. Many legislation and laws
have been implemented to prevent these kinds of practices and save the medical staff from the
violence. The unethical elements of the society are responsible for inhuman practices. But
sometimes a mental disorder patient’s claim also harms the medical staff. One of the important
things that play a crucial role in these kinds of practices is culture. Culture does not allow
changing the attitude and perception of the people towards particular things. The people of a
society behave in a certain way according to their culture.
Evaluation of the portfolio process
This incident affected me deeply and I become more conscious about the misconduct in the
hospital by the patients. I learnt a lot from that incident. I learnt that how to deal with a patient
suffering from schizophrenia. That incident also taught me that if situations like this arrive how
to handle the situation. I learnt about the values that need to deal with such situation. The values
like self-respect, autonomy, and fairness are most important in the medical field. I have learnt
about the determinants of the incident like this. Historical and social factors are also responsible
for such incident. Social factors such as culture and attitude and perception of the people towards
nurses are also responsible for the violence against the nurses.
