Sub-domains of BMI (Biomedical Informatics) aligning best with current or desired
area: The domain of BMI which aligns best to my interests is the x-axis domain of ‘Clinical and
Health Services’ (Digital Health Canada). This is because not only is my current area of
academics and research focusing extensively on healthcare and disease prevention, but my
current area of interest is also associated with deliverance of optimum patient care via
appropriate electronic documentation of patient health data as well as providing adequate
protection and security for the same (Richesson et al.). BMI plays a key role in enhancing patient
care quality since it allows patients to comprehensively record and document their health details
as well as calls for easy accessibility and quick relaying of essential health information to health
professionals for diagnosis in a safe and secure manner (Hripcsak et al.).
Methods, techniques and theories: My desired field of research would mostly align
with the ‘proficient level’ of ‘Clinical and Health Services’ since it focuses on the application of
BMI in clinical and health associated fields for individuals with Master’s and Bachelor’s levels
competencies, which is largely similar to students like me. Possible options for clinical
application of BMI in this level is clinical informatics (Digital Health Canada). The major
principle of clinical informatics is maintenance of optimum levels of safety and security during
the storage of patient data. Examples which demonstrate research and professional application of
this type include implementation of electronic health records and associated technologies like
radio-frequency identification and bed management systems. In terms of the clinical research
informatics, research should be centered around informatics theories on patient safety and data
storage, transfer, encryption, collection and acquisition (Hübner et al.).
Combined/ Intersecting position: The work I plan to accomplish as per the intersecting
job position in the ‘proficient level’ and ‘Clinical and Health Services’ of the y and x axis is

Clinical Informatics Analyst or Clinical Informatics Specialist (Digital Health Canada). My
major professional responsibilities as per this intersecting job profile is to ensure that patient data
and patient health records are not just readily accessible to patients and clinicians but are also
securely stored and protected. This is because maintenance of patient privacy and confidentiality
is of utmost importance for any healthcare organization and must be maintained in the case of
healthcare informatics as well. My professional duties as a clinical informatics specialists or
manager must be in compliance with the standards and recommendations postulated by the
American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) (Monsen et al.).
