Chapter 2: Literature Review
2.1 Introduction
Increasing in service costs as well as pressure to provide quality healthcare services to the
society irrespective of purchasing power are two challenges that the healthcare sector is facing
now-a-days. Biemans (2018) stated that information technology plays a key role into the
healthcare areas. Groves et al., (2016) argued that in order to provide quality services to patients
at reduced cost, maintenance of the patient history, digital imaging of paper forms as well as
generation of the electronic medical records are the healthcare technologies which help to
manage process innovation and increase productivity of the business organization. By means of
IT, the healthcare services are offering predictable and manageable services so that there is
steady transformation of their healthcare services. Zhang et al., (2017) discussed that the
healthcare sector is required to bring technological innovations to offer quality services at lower
cost and manage risks.
2.2 Benefits of healthcare technology in process innovation
Introduction of the Electronic Health Records (EHR) into the healthcare sector would
replace paper records which is a huge change allied with the healthcare professionals. The
medical assistants, health information technicians and coding professionals are playing the
healthcare role into implementation of this technology. In order to manage process innovation
into the healthcare, this technology can input patient data like vital signs, test results and others
into centralized system.Ruff (2015) explained that the medical billers as well as coders are

the medical claims. Following are the benefits of the healthcare technology into process
innovation such as:
Improve the public healthcare:EHR provides with invaluable data to the clinical
researchers with advancement of the medical knowledge as well as development of the new
treatments for the healthcare related problems (Wang, Kung, & Byrd, 2018). The healthcare
system can help to identify vital infections rapidly.
Ease of workflow:Entering of data into the healthcare system is a time consuming
process as compared to paper based methods. Witellet al., (2016) stated that it reduces risks of
human errors while entering data into the system as well as financial details. Accessing to the
patient’s data is done in viewed via the portable devices and increased in productivity.
Lower the healthcare cost:Nambisanet al., (2017) discussed that shifting from the paper
to EHR will lead to reduce costs of the outpatients by approximately 5%. As per the researchers,
there is estimation of cost savings of around $5.18% per patient in each month.
Snyder et al., (2016) stated that the healthcare technology can allow for masses of the
information to be stored at lower cost without limitations and expense of extra hardware as well
as servers. Rothaermel(2015) discussed that the healthcare sector is using cloud for the analysis
of the healthcare data as well as exchange of the health information. The technology can link the
healthcare professionals with providing them quality as well as error free data. Therefore, the
benefits are shorter waiting time for the patients, improved access to the rural areas and improve
business efficiency leading to cost savings.

2.3 Challenges to innovation in healthcare delivery
Wang, Kung and Byrd (2018) discussed that there are various benefits into the healthcare
technology for process innovation, while there are some challenges which are discussed as
below:
Centralized data point:A central point for data information is extremely useful as well as
over dependence on cloud is introduced risks of significant information being unavailable in case
of emergency. When all the data points are available online, then it is a serious problem for the
healthcare professionals. Shanks (2016) argued that the main concern is raised from the cloud
computing as well as increase in mobile usage for security as well as protection of data.
Healthcare data hacking: The healthcare sector is facing theft where patient’s data are
stolen such as their names as well as addresses and no details regarding treatments are being
exposed. Sometimes, due to human as well as technical errors, the patient’s data are not face in
the local clinic.Bradshaw and Hultquist(2017) stated that the information on medical records is
used to create fake ID for purchasing medical equipments and drugs and even there is
submission of false insurance claims.
2.4 Recommend solution towards implementation of healthcare technology for
managing process innovation
Data analytics: The healthcare sector is claiming data, analytics as well as tools to help
in making better healthcare related decisions on which the providers are appropriate based on the
quantitative data. The value of healthcare data is a process to analyze data collected from various
sources (Nagy, Schuessler, & Dubinsky, 2016). It helps the healthcare sector to treat the patients

to outline the required details of the research topic which will bring out enhanced quality of the
analysis. The sample size taken for the research is 55 for quantitative technique.
3.3 Research Philosophy
Research philosophy in research methodology aids to decide the appropriate methods to
gain detailed information on the topic. In accordance to Hair Jr et al. (2015), the choice of a
research philosophy is significant in explaining the assumptions undertaken in conducting the
study. Positivism, interpretivism and realism are the broad and familiar forms of epistemology.
Positivism aids the researcher in applying and understanding of the logic with the
objective to discover any information and hidden factors in a scientific way. Though scientific
method dominates, metaphysics is ignored by positivism to enable detailed observation.
Interpretivim on the other side supports the complex model of the business world and social
management activities. Realism is a mixed bag of both positivism and interpretivism, involving
attributes of the two philosophies. Realism describes the use of human beliefs in studying the
varied forms of interactions of humans and reality.
Justification of the chosen Philosophy
Positivism is the chosen philosophy for the research to study the hidden factors and
conduct the research according to the need of the study. The course of the study is time
consuming hence, interpretative and realism is discarded from the choice of philosophy.
Moreover, positivism limits the manipulation of data by the researcher which minimizes errors
significantly.

3.4 Research Approach
An appropriate approach to conduct research is required to unveil the format of the
research. A research topic can be broadly divided into deductive or inductive ways. Deductive
approach involves the practical use of the theories applied to gain knowledge and content of the
paper. The aim of deductive method is to build a theory filled with concepts and specifications of
analysis of data. Inductive method of study is chosen in a situation where there is insufficient
amount of data available. The primary stage of this approach is observation of the element to
gain considerable amount of relevant knowledge and information to pave the path of the research
work. The selection of a research approach is chosen on the basis of the research subject at hand.
Justification for selection of the chosen Approach:
This research study analyses the use of technologies in the healthcare sector to manage
process innovation. For this particular study, deductive approach will provide the appropriate
manner to precisely conduct the research. Inductive approach cannot be applied for the current
research topic as there are no new theories which the researcher has emphasized.
3.5 Research Design
Research design aids in elucidating the skeleton of the research topic and in deciding the
analyzing pattern and collection method. There are three kinds of research design techniques –
exploratory, explanatory and descriptive. Exploratory design assists the researcher to
acknowledge several sorts of thoughts and ideas that is required in completion of the paper.
Explanatory designs discuss the occurrence of events and the effect of the happenings. Lastly the
aim of descriptive design is to gain details on the occurrence of the events.

provide detailed idea of the management of process innovation. Explanatory is avoided in this
case as the design supports longitudinal concept of study which is not in sync for the particular
research topic.
3.6 Data Collection Method
Data are the most important source of information that helps in the research process as it
provides superior insights into the subject. Data collection is important to gain accurate result in
a research process (alinkas, 2017).
Data Sources: Primary and Secondary
Data sources helps in easy penetration into the topic and similarly aids in extracting
maximum information as per the requirement of the study. There are two kinds of sources to
collect data- primary source and secondary source. Primary sources provides raw data collected
through first hand, however requires validation Secondary sources include sources like books,
blogs, articles, journals and others.
Data techniques: Qualitative and Quantitative
There are two kinds of data techniques: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative data adds
value to the previously acquired data record. Quantitative data applies statistical data which are
helpful in recording huge sample sizes (Jensen, 2017). For this particular research, quantitative
data will be considered to study the use of technology in healthcare sector to manage process
innovation.
