NURSING LEADERSHIP 2
Nursing Leadership
The week 5 and week 6 activities including meeting the chief nursing officer, visiting
hospitals, meeting nursing leaders, and meeting with each unit nursing staff played an important
role in my nursing career. I observed that the nursing profession or practice primarily focuses on
the care of communities, families, and individuals so that it can be able to maintain and attain
quality health (Blais, 2015). Moreover, I observed that nurses are quite different with other
medical professionals or care providers. Their approach and scope of practice are unique. The
nursing professionals are judiciously allowed to independently practice in a range of settings
including theatres (Sharkey & Lefebre, 2017). Additionally, I observed that the nurses develop or
establish a care plan and collaboratively work with doctors, therapists, physicians, patients, and
the patients’ families to deliver quality services and improve the quality of life. My thought in
regards to nurses is that they provide invaluable emotional support to both the patient and his or
her family. I also think that nurses as the best counselors and can collaboratively and
independently work with physicians to save lives. In other words, nurses are caring, patient, and
compassionate.
Besides being caring patient, and compassionate, the nurses must also exhibit proper
leadership skills. My nurse leader's leadership style positively affects service delivery in the
health care. The manager employs a mishmash of participative and transformational leadership
styles (Lin et al., 2015). The leader consults other nurses before decision-making, therefore,
making the other nurses feel valued in the decision-making. The leadership focuses on the larger
picture within the facility and delegates small tasks to the team members to achieve the
organization’s goal. The leadership makes the nurses to efficiently and effectively work to
provide high-quality services (Wong, 2015). It also motivates the workforce by providing

remunerations including bonuses for extra working time. The leadership as well ensures a secure
working environment, therefore, ensuring the nurses’ of their security and safety. In the same
token, the leadership makes sure the medical equipment is safe for operation (Weiss & Tappen,
2014). As such, my nurse leader's leadership style positively impacts the workforce.
It is important to note that the staff members express feelings of support to the leadership
style displayed in the organization. They believe that the leadership style is helpfulness in
realizing the facility’s goal, vision as well as mission. The leadership has a global mindset or
perspective. It embraces cultural differences within societies and diversity. The staff members
believe that this assists the leadership to effectively respond or react to global healthcare patterns
and trend and adapt them to the facility for better service delivery. The leadership also values
empirical science and research which helps in accomplishing desired health care outcome or
result. It is worthwhile mentioning that the leader is not dictating but leading. For example, he
consults with the staff members through a meeting before arriving at a decision. The leader also
participates in service delivery in the hospital. Notably, the leader does things tailored or
designed toward “building” the staff. For example, he has essential team building and
collaborative skills geared toward establishing a good working relationship with the juniors. The
leadership as well creates a sense of community via proper conflict management, clear
communication, and effective monitoring.
Remarkably, one of the things I have learned from the “Issue of Power” video includes
the essence of leadership. The video reveals that the essence or purpose of leadership is mainly
influence ("Grand Canyon University | Digital Resource", 2018) Leaders should influence others
to achieve specific goals. In this regards, a leader must have the power to influence others and
should never force himself or herself to lead. In other words, a leader must be accepted by the

people he or she leads. Secondly, I have also known the salient characteristic of a good leader. A
good leader must be a good decision-maker. He or she should be able to make right decisions
which would be carried out by other people. Additionally, I have also learned that it is the
position one holds which gives him or her right to authority.
In conclusion, leadership is an important facet of any institution. Leaders help in driving
organizational agenda as well as attaining organizational goals. A good leader should be one who
involves others on decision-making. He or she should also motivate the juniors by formulating
better policies which would enable the organization moves forward through the provision of
high-quality services. In the same token, leaders play an important role in influencing others; and
this is the essence of leadership. However, the influence should not be carried out authoritatively
but decently with a lot of integrity, respect, and honesty.
