Impact of conflicts on quality of care:
Conflicts in health care settings are detrimental to patient safety and quality care
outcomes. This may occur because of power differences between physicians and nurses,
experience of discrimination and poor coordination between team. Such form of conflicts delays
delivery of care, impairs multidisciplinary coordination, leads to excessive work stress and
ultimately medical errors (Jerng et al., 2017). Hence, patient safety events increase because of
conflicts in hospital setting. For example, while working in one of the organizations during my
clinical placement, I witnessed conflicts between senior physicians and newly placed nurse. The
nurses expected cooperation and engagement in patient care process. However, the senior
doctors just provided them their assigned duty for the day and there was team based hurdles or
discussion regarding patient progress updates and future course of action. The ultimate outcome
was that nurses were dissatisfied and they suffered from low morale. To resolve this issue, it was
necessary to engage in effective and collaborative team work irrespective of skills and power
differences. This would have enhances team performance and promote patient safety.

Kenda’s post gives the argument that difference in communication and expectation
between staffs is a common issue, however it is important for health care professionals to be
patient. I think appropriate communication between health care professional is necessary as per
professional standards and expectations in care too. Health care professionals can learn during
their practice how to respect each staffs members and involve every staff member to promote
care coordination and care delivery (Amudha et al., 2018).
