ATCHISON SENIOR VILLAGE NURSING HOME 2
Introduction
Health care is an important aspect for the well being of any population. Particularly
healthcare becomes among the basic needs with the advancement of age. The quality of the
services offered in health care centers should be keenly looked at so as to minimize the risk of
exposing people to danger of health hazards. Safety in the health care process is generally
important as it helps to minimize infection by other opportunistic infections.
Nursing home overview
Atchison senior village nursing home is a care giving home of the aged found in Kansas
Missouri USA. It is owed by the county government and it is medium in size with 56 certified
beds. The facility is not among those that provide continuing care for the retirement community
but its participation is purely on Medicare and Medicaid.
Performance
The performance of the nursing home was unsatisfactory when the last inspection was
conducted. First of all the nursing home imposes extra charges on the people who are cared for
as evident on $156 for single and $145 for double and average of $160 which is 0.75% higher
than the state double price of $143 in Kansas Missouri (Ae-Sook Kim 2016). The vulnerable that

have developed sores in their bodies and using the facility end up being withdrawn due to poor
health care and increases risk of infections. Only 20% of this is left behind due to inability to get
better services elsewhere. The facility typically lacks long term residents due to poor care and
lack of safety health wise since the environment is not conducive enough to for the public to
entrust their aging relatives.
Safety performance
The safety performance is relatively poor since the number of caregivers is far smaller
compared to the number of those to be taken care of the ratio of 1:14 is irrational since some of
the individuals need extra care. The caregivers too operate within specified time according to the
job therefore when time is over they stop hence some of the attendees may lack attention
(Mutawe, 2015). Even at the instances where the caregiver is pushed to attend to all those who
need assistance, inadequate care is given hence increases the chances of illnesses and other
related risks. The safety of the people who need care is therefore not equivalent to the amount of
money they pay (Hitt & Tambe, 2016). Furthermore subjection to an increase of 0.75% should
have been an extra mile for better services.
Quality improvement
Quality at all cost should not be compromised in the nursing homes because it puts the
patients at the risk of opportunistic infection. To improve quality regulations should be attached
to the operation of the nursing home. This will help to eradicate unwanted vices which threaten
the lives of those who are in need of the services (Troyer & Thompson, 2014). Continued
inspection should also be conducted regularly to determine the homes that meet the human health
requirement standards. The inspection results should then be used to discontinue poorly

performing homes and advice the general public on the choice of homes for their aging relatives
or patients. Accountability can also be used to push for quality of services in the homes by
ensuring the bosses issue public authentic briefs about the home they are operating.
Safety improvement
To improve safety in a nursing home, problems facing the patients should be determined
and ways to provide remedy are established. Actions against the problems are then implemented
to eradicate the threat. The health care providers should be trained with an aim of helping them
to deliver good services to the patients or the aging depending on the context (Mutawe, 2015).
This training will also enhance practicing good hygiene which will protect both the patients and
the care givers. Enhancing care coordination by assigning each of the health care providers
specific roles to handle rather than generally assuming that the roles will be done by any of them.
This should be done because some complicated tasks require professionalism to handle.
Prioritization of the needs of patients should be the first consideration rather than other issues
and concerns. This will help to reduce negligence of duty and at the same time reducing risks
that patients fall into when their needs are not catered for.
Conclusion
Atchison senior village nursing home in Kansas Missouri has a poor star rating due to
poor services offered to the clients and poor performance. The home has been found to have also
been taking advantage of the vulnerable through overcharging. Safety of those in the home

should be considered a priority so as to minimize risks associated with negligence. Quality of the
services should also be advocated so as to limit exploitation.
