Systems Modelling and Simulation Assignment: Healthcare Performance

This assignment focuses on modeling and simulating a healthcare system within a clinical center in a war-torn region. The analysis covers two patient types, low and high priority, and examines key performance indicators (KPIs) such as patient waiting times, resource utilization of various staff (nurses, GPs, surgeons), and queue overflow. The student identifies bottlenecks caused by underutilized higher-level staff and proposes solutions like increasing parallel operations and recruiting more ground-level employees to reduce patient waiting times and potential mortality due to queue overflow. The study also recommends improvements to resource allocation, staff training, and facility expansion (beds, treatment wards) to optimize patient flow, reduce waiting times, and minimize casualties. The assignment includes data analysis, identification of areas for improvement, and proposed solutions with specific KPI targets.

6. Most of the staffs, especially higher positioned staffs (GP, Shearson, and Chief Nurse) are not utilised properly,
which is causing bottlenecking. With more base level staffs more number of parallel unit could be operated in order to
reduce the waiting time.
7. Total holding ability in queue is 20 and total holding request is 35. Hence the the loss of patient referral due to queue
overflow is 15.
8. Mortality rate is 0
9. The potential mortality rate is a result of over-referral due to queue overflow
10. Therefore the ideal number behind the queue in the operation room is 20. Keeping the number lower than 20 will
help to minimize the mortality rate
Part 2

1. To
reduce the number of lost patient increasing the parallel
operations
and recruiting more ground level employees will be required
2. To increase the utilisation of the resource, the increment should be focused on higher level staffs. Therefore, the
increasing the number of lower level staffs will increase the resource utilisation
13. Clinical staffs should have an efficiency improvement training that will allow them to consume low amount of time
in an assessment procedure.
14. To reduce mortality rate patient referral number should be reduced. Therefore for this increasing the parallel
facilities will be helpful such as more assessment word, increasing number of bed and others.
Part 3
Increasing the number bed by 2 will be very helpful to reduce the number of unwanted casualties. Apart from that the
number of treatment ward can be increase which will require additional funding. The key performance factor in this
case will be 0 referral due to prolonged queue, average waiting time will be 6 hours, average WIP will be 48 hours for
patient 1 and 3 hours in patient. Keeping the number within the above mentioned limit will help to significantly
minimize the number of casualties.
