1.2 Potential disputes in the preservation of heritage and cultural resources
There are large number of growth opportunities which are available to Cultural and tourism
sector but along with, it has also some conflicts that comes before while preserving social and
cultural resources.
City of Lhasa which is an body capital of Tibet Autonomous Region which can also be called as
TAR that is a portion of democracy of China. According to a survey, second largest populated
city is Lhasa which is existed at highest peak in the global. This city is very popular because of
having large tourist places such as Tibetan Buddhist site, Jokhang Temple etc.
For analysing potential conflicts in the conservation of resources, there are two vital concept
which can be used for this purpose. One is negative which is related with the rising number of
tourist in that place which affects the infrastructure of heritage and cultural area. And second
one is positive aspect in which only positivity will be seen such as increasing number of tourist
will expand the income of the state by which society can be developed.
For analysing conflicts, stakeholders play an important role so they should be identified first. As
per Lhasa situation, there are several types of people who plays an vital role in the development
of society such as local government, communities and other travel authorities etc.
In prescribed scenario, disputes are arises because of Chinese government because they were
running multiple projects at one time such as road building and “Resort Lhasa Paradise” build
by intercontinental Hotel group. Along with, they are also running other project which is
renovation of Barkhor town. This issue came to know because of a NGO which is situated in
London named Free Tibet which stated that these undertaking will be harmful for heritage and
cultural sites and will also impact their religious sentiments.
It also stated that it should be boycott from Tibet because IHG hotels and Resort in Paradise are
not following existing rules and regulations of government. Along with, they said that if theme
park will build then it will harm to heritage and cultural sites because it will increase the flow of
travellers.
This NGO is right who said that if Chinese government will continue with their non sustainable
strategy then it will harm to heritage and cultural sites. So they should find a new way which
will full fill the needs of all concerned people who are participating in this procedure.
Everything should be in written form so that there is organic, sustainable growth in the region.
