Skills is defined as the ability of an individual which allows him to achieve desired goals
and objectives and also helps in motivating him to perform better and effective. Enhancing skills
during higher education allows the individual to improve their confidence, competence as well as
self-esteem (Singh and Singh, 2019). Good study skills helps in enhance the ability to learn and
retain their knowledge. There are are number of skills that can be enhanced by the individual to
perform better in their academic career. One of the most essential is academic writing skills , this
helps individual to perform better in their academic career. This report highlights the detailed
description of academic writing skills for the individual. Also the features of academic writing is
also highlighted in this report along with the personal experience of the learning done during the
course.

Discuss four of the features of academic writing also discuss why they are important
Academic writing is defined as clear, specific, concise, focused and structured including
facts and figures. The purpose of the academic writing is to offer clear and precise understanding
to the readers (Dumford and Miller, 2018). It generally written in formal tone and style, but not
in a complex manner also including long sentences. The effective academic writing skills allows
the student to effectively communicate their ideas, information to vast academic community in
writing form. Effective academic writing helps the students to express their ideas using formal
tone and style leading to enhance their academic performance and achieve desired career goals. It
is one of the essential skills considered for the students to perform better in their career and
academic path. There are various features of the academic writing as mentioned below:
Features of academic writing
Some of the features of the academic writing are mentioned below:
Structured: One of the most essential feature of the academic writing is that it has clear
structure. The structure of the writing is often derived from the genre of writing such as a report
follows a proper structure starting with introduction including the aim, then the main section or
the discussion part and so on (Er, 2018). But whereas the essay follows structure like
introduction, clear and precise paragraph and then the conclusion. Clear planning and setting
proper structure will helps the students to effectively write their report with clear focus including

main idea as well as including logical ideas. Following proper structure of the report helps
readers to easily understand the report and ideas (Kardipah and Wibawa, 2018).
Critical: Another feature of the academic writing is the critical aspects. Effective
academic writing is not only about describing things in the report. It includes identifying and
evaluating the information collected for the writing, analysing proper facts and figures of the
informations also making a proper judgements about the information and data before including
them in the writing. It will help the students to effectively research about their topic and include
only the valid information to make it precise and clear. The critical writing allows the writers to
do through research about their topic and include the valid information (Barr, 2019).
Balanced: Another feature of the academic writing is the balanced writing, a effective
and positive academic writing includes balanced form of information. Giving proper
consideration to all the aspects, issues and avoiding any kind of bias leads to a balanced writing
for the individual. Proper and effective research, evidence and arguments can create challenge
for the individual in their academic writing so it is essential for the individual to consider all the
aspects and create balance of the work (Seliand Dembo, 2019). It will help the writer to present
clear and effective writing and perform better in their academic career path.
Precise: The last feature of the academic writing is that the academic writing are precise
also includes clear and precise language enabling the readers to understand their writing and the
idea presented. For a students while writing the academic writing needs to make use of technical
terms in order to convey the meaning more clearly and precisely in comparison to any kind of
non technical terms. Use of technical term with proper description will allow the readers to easily
understand the writing. Clear and precise academic writing will helps them the writers to achieve
their desired career goals (Sofferand Nachmias, 2018).
Describe personal experience
While doing this coursework I have analysed that academic writing skills plays an
essential role for the growth and development of the student in their academic career life.
Through researching about academic writing I have also analysed that proper writing skills helps
students to present their ideas and information in more clear and precise form making it easy for
the readers to understand their idea presented through the report. Through the coursework I have
also analysed that to make the academic writing more effective or to improve the academic
writing skills, proper research of the topic, including the facts and figure needs to be done (Tight,

From the above report it has been concluded that skills plays an essential role in the
growth and development of the individual in their academic and professional development. It is
also analysed that developing various skills helps the individual to grow and achieve desired
career goals. Through this report it is also analysed that academic writing is one of the essential
academic skills which allows the individual to perform better in their academic life. This report
helps in analysing the importance of academic writing along with various features of academic
writing such as structured, critical balanced and precise. Also the learning done through this
course which will help in enhancing academic writing is also analysed in this report.
