INTRODUCTION
The literal meaning of word management is to get the things done by others
in a coordinated way to achieve certain goal/profit. It is a continuous process by which profit
is generated by transferring values to society. This project is made with an aim to give better
understanding of word management in the context of Hospitality industry. This project is
based on the hotel Hilton. Started in the year 1925 Hilton hotels is now presented at 42
locations in United Kingdom (Drucker, 2012). The core belief of Hilton hotel management is
to deliver an experience to customer which goes beyond their hotel walls.
TASK 1
P1Comparative study of different management styles
Management is an art of getting things done by other, by Harold Koontz.
There are various management stylesto follow this art.
Following are the different management styles:
i. Autocratic: This is a top down management style in which direction &
instruction flows from top to bottom. Management set a clear expectation
before it’s employee that what needs to be done by them. In this style
management do not involve employee in decision making.
ii. Democratic: In this style, decision is taken by majority. This style is effective
for long term decision but is does not solve the purpose of time saving. The
C.E.O of Hilton follows democratic style of leadership.
iii. Laissez Faire: This is a management style where leader works as a mentor.
Employee takes decision & leader guides them (Tile and et. al., 2015). Here
the role of the leader is to guide employee.
iv. Persuasive: This is a one-way communication management style where
employees are told what they need to do. In this style, management explains
that, why management decisions are right.
P2 Describe the characteristic of leadership
Communication Skills: The ability to deliver intended message to
people or group of people. It is transfer of on information from one person/place to
another person/place. It is important in communication that the messages were
decoded in the right manner. For example, if someone does not look into your eyes
while communication that means He or she is hiding truth.
Confidence: A confident person has belief on his own capabilities. It
refers to believe to own strength. It a state where a person is sure about that he can

achieve certain target in a specific time (David, 2011). For example, if someone says I
can do it or I will get the things done.
Creativity Skills: The art of doing things in innovative ways. This term
refer for the finding new way which has not been attempted by anyone yet. Another
term which generally refers for creativity is “Thinking out of box”. For example:
“Steve Jobs founded IPhone (Touch screen phone) on his innovative skills.
P3 Communication process of Hilton Hotel UK
Verbal The verbal communication takes
place at same level of management.
Verbal communication is efficient as
it create employee bonding. The tone
of voice and pitch of voice is very
attractive. It gives pleasure to talk to
Hilton staff.
Written In written communication, order and
instruction takes flow from top to
bottom. Hence a top to bottom level
approached is used. The changes in
policies, programs are expressed in
written manner (Drucker, 2012). The
major changes are informed in written
so that everyone clearly understands
the importance of change.
Non-Verbal Non-verbal communication is very
effective at Hilton. As employees
shows right body language. The eyes
contact and body language everything
is up to the mark.
Barriers In efficient communication
The flow of communication (Top-down) is smooth but it is little tough for
lower level management to send their views to top management.
Sometime lower management wants to have verbal communication with top
management which does not take place.
The cross functional department struggles with the communication. As
communication breaks in the middle of the process or sometime intended
message deliver to wrong person.
P4 Explain organizational culture & change
Organizational culture refers to the belief and values that a corporate
carries to operate their business activities. It is a term which is use to denote the

practices that an organisation allows to run it operation. How employees interact with
each other? The level of employee satisfaction, the exercise of power among
employees and the flow of communication in the organisation are the essentials of
organization culture. In hotel Hilton equity is considered as the most important value
of organisation (Langley and et, al., 2013). At Hilton more collaborative work is found.
A more collectivism efforts are part of Hilton culture.
Change is the only constant that prevails in universe. In Hilton hotel
change is capitalize easily with their efficient leadership style. The most important
aspect is to deal with a plans and unplanned change. Hilton takes care of planned
changes as well as unplanned changes by having a backup of the unplanned change.
They plan for next situation keep employee motivated with their effective leadership.

P5 Measuring own management skills performance
I am taking experience of school time I lead the dance activities.
Management skills 1. In the event I faced many issues like
coordination among cross function
team. I solved these by discussing it
with team heads and kept a problem
solving attitude.
2. My performance in this skill was
good as I not only solved the problem
but I consumed very less time for it.
Leadership skills 1. I followed Laissez Faire style of
leadership. I allowed my team to take
decision at their own. The
performance level was more than
average as it was my first leadership
work and my team was satisfies with
my work (Tang and Musa, 2011).
Interpersonal skills 1. I was able to clear communicate
with others what I exactly want to
do. I create a sense of
belongingness among people that I
am there for them always.

work done in efficient manner.

P7 Set objectives to develop own potential
In order to develop own skill maintain and prioritise aim and targets. In
relation to SWOT analysis develop a plan to improve skills for conflict and time
management. In order to develop and maintain skills some action must need to take.
First find out strength and weakness of personality. Talk to people what best can be
done to improve. Improve decision making and find out emotional triggers. Set some
kind of boundary and stick to that.
Practice self-discipline to achieve result. Use psychometric test (online test) for
measuring result and it will also help to improve time management as these tests are
time bound (Guest, 2011). Practicing self-motivation and meditation is help to improve
mental strength. This would help in push your limit towards achieving result for
personality skills.
TASK 3
P8 To achieve a goal or objective, lead and motivate a team
It is immense important to properly lead and motivate to achieve goal.
Depending upon the objectives the style of leadership should be selected. Use
transformational leadership to motivate team. The transformational leadershipshould
base on an attractive, inspiring vision of future, encourages team to works towards
goal and create a trust building relationship with team.

The implementation of Mcgregor X and Y can be useful in this situation. This
theory is helpful in practicing motivation at workplace. Apart from pay everyone
wants to see growth in his/her own skill. In order to motivate team provide them a
culture of learning and growth. Tell them that by contributing in this goal will increase
their knowledge and capabilities. Avoid micromanagement in leading team as it
dissatisfy employee (Jiang, Lepak, Hu, J. and Baer, 2012). To better utilize their
capacities empower your team. Empowerment not only motivates team but also create
a sense of self-worth.
P9 Justify the management decisions which were made to achieve goal
The selection of transformational leadership, motivation theory of X and Y and
empowerment technique is right on the following ground as it is helpful in properly
leading and motivating team. According to the Maslow theory of motivation Self-
actualization is at top of the need pyramid. The transformational leadership create a
sense of self-worth and hence achieve the stage of self-actualization. This motivates
the team in best way.
aIn transformational leadership followers perform beyond their capacity and
expectation. Since transformational leadership and empowerment gives a culture of
growth and self-worthiness that makes people to perform at their high capacities.
Empowerment gives a positive feel to team. It is helpful in improving commitment,
performance and productivity. In empowerment people are free to do work as per their
style hence responsible for result.
aThe implication of X and Y theory is right as it is helpful in applying a
customised approach based on the people attitude towards. Hence everyone get
personalized attention.

P10 Describe in what ways own managerial and personal skills will support in career
development
Managerial and personal skills means set of values and benefits that personality
possess. These skills add value to organization. It helps to reach a desired career level.
The skill set of personality helps in set achieve and feasible plans. Higher the skill set
higher the ratio of achievement of result (Diabat, and Govindan, 2011). These executions
of plan support for career growth as the high skilled person achieve the result.
Achievement of result shows the productivity of person. This productivity takes the
organisation to next level. Hence person also grows with the organisation.
As a person step up the ladder of career he or she becomes confident. This
confidence helps in doing risky and challenged task. As a person does more

As stated above for career development Managerial and leadership skills are
important. It not only helps in personal growth but also helps in building long terms
relationship. This long terms relationship is beneficial for personal life also. A person
whose personal life is happy performs better than other person. The skill set plays an
important role in executing plans.
The current performance is of immense important for creating future plan. As it
shows the area of improvement for future performance. To use 100% a person
potential the development plan should be in accordance with the career & personal
development requirement. It is of much need because it is the right tool for motivation
and performance enhancement (Zang, 2011).
Better the implication of career and development requirement better is
exploitation of person skills and potential. This help to produce a significant develop
plan as current performance is benchmark for taking one step up for future goal.
CONCLUSION
From the above report it is concluded that managerial skills are very important for
growth and learning. There are various skills set in the management theory from
which few are very common and very important. These managerial skills cannot get
ignored because these tools are applied and practised by various organizations. To
become successful one need to possess these skills. Management should aware of
these management theories and technique for getting competitive advantage. These
skills can be learned through self-awareness. Thus, management theories are very
useful for individual and organization.
