1. Briefly explain why it is important for workers to understand the legislative
requirement of their job role.
This is important for an effective health and safety management and to provide a safe
working environment for everyone in the workplace.
2. How is WHS information communicated to workers at your service?
It is set out in written or verbal in a meeting where we are explained about this. If ever
there were any staff absent for the meeting then it is the responsibility of those present
to pass it on to others.
3. How are workers informed of their legal obligations and rights?
It is the responsibility of the centre director to make the workers aware of their
obligations and rights.
4. Do you think these methods of communication are adequate? Explain your reason.
Yes because it is easier to understand and explain the situation to the people we feel
comfortable with.

report based on the example provided from ACECQA.

As per the check list, the possible hazards at the workplace include limited
ventilation, faulty electrical equipment, overloaded power points and loose floor
coverings.
Practice Task 3
1. Education and care services National Regulation 101 outlines the risk assessment
that must be completed prior to an excursion. What consideration are listed?
 the proposed route and destination for the excursion

Practice Task 4
1. Access the document used to report hazards in your service environment, and the
policy and procedures relating to this report.
Hazards can be avoided by accessing it, identifying the risks to health and safety that
hazards create. Hazards can be reported by workplace inspections, consulting with the
workers, injury, illness, trauma and the maintenance report that would provide an
overall image about what is happening in the organisation.
2. Identify a hazard in your work environment (or use the residual risk example in this
section). Use the report from question 1 to record the issues.
One example of a work place hazards is the stroke that can be caused due to excessive
heat or working for a prolonged period of time in the sun, excessive heat generated in
the factories are also detrimental.
3. Check the policy to find out who you should report issues to. Discuss your
completed report with this person and how you could improve the way you complete
this type of form. Document any suggestions.
These issues should be reported to the centre director straight away so that immediate
actions are being taken. The director can give suggestions regarding how it can be
prevented. The supervisor might suggest the precautionary measures or set up certain
norms, such that the incident is not repeated with the other workers.
Practice Task 5
1. What is the item of PPE?
Head protective gears such a s ear plugs or ear muffs should be used. Safety helmets are
also required to prevent head injury
2. Which policy and/or procedure refers to this item of PPE?
Regulations 85-87 ensure protecting a child from any incident of injury, harm or
trauma. It also includes informing the child’s parents about the incident.
3. How do you let the other educators know about the importance of this PPE and about

Self: We are all extremely focused on carrying out our tasks at the workplace. However,
sometimes certain hazards occur that lead to untoward consequences and affect the
members. ’ll discuss today on the PPE and the safety precautions that we need to follow
while working in a childcare service centre.
Educator 1: Why do we need to discuss on safety measures? I believe we abide by the
rules accordingly.
Educator 2: What is a PPE? Will this discussion benefit us?
Self: PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment. I am sure we will be immensely
benefitted by this interaction.
Educator 1: So, tell us what do you want us to know about PPE?
Self: PPE is a term generally applied to items that are worn with the aim of
safeguarding a person from any health hazards at the workplace. It acts as a barrier
between the person who is wearing it and the hazard that can cause him a harm.
Educator 2: Is it something like a jacket?
Self: Not really. It does not act as a substitute for any other safety measure like
workplace engineering. It is used to prevent potential injuries due to health hazards. The
control standards are identified, appropriate PPE are provided for employers and
participants at a workplace and the employees are trained on effective usage methods.
PPE generally involve eye and face protection gears, corrective prescription lenses,
protective eyewear like faces shields and spectacles, head protection gears and foot and
leg protection objects.
Educator 1: Why is head protection gear needed?
Self: A head injury can be fatal for any adult or children. At a childcare service centre,
if the employees or children suffer a fall from the staircase or an elevated concrete area,
their brain can get severely damaged. It can lead to severe neurological impairment and
can even be fatal. Wearing a safety headgear is one of the easiest ways to avoid such
fatal injuries.
Educator 2: What about the application of foot equipments? Could you please
elaborate?
Self: Sure. Legs and foot are liable to get crushed or injured if any heavy tool or sharp
instruments fall on them. Electrical hazards can also lead to an injury to the limbs.
Special purpose shoes can prevent injury from electric hazards. Leggins are a PPE item
that can protect the lower legs and feet from any injury. PPE like gloves, finger guards
and arm coverings help in arm protection.
Educator 1: Now I understand the use of PPE. How soon can we implement application
of these items at our workplace?
Self: The sooner PPE are applied at a workplace, the better will be the chances of
avoiding any injuries or health hazards. We need to understand PPE and its care
practices to effectively contribute to hazard reduction at the workforce.

4. Are there any PPE items listed in your service emergency procedures or emergency
management plan? Provide details.
The emergency management plan includes safety measures that need to be followed
during fire, calamity, off-site emergencies like excursion and major medical
emergencies. This management plan ensures that personal protection equipments should
be made accessible for the children and the educators to prevent occurrence of any
untoward event likely to cause harm. The PPE items include protective headgear like
wide brimmed hats, safety helmets, protective aprons, safety glasses, gloves, safety
boots, earmuffs and earpieces.
Practice Task 6
1. Obtain copies of your service policies and procedures relating to housekeeping
monitoring duties, including any checklists or monitoring guides. Explain how these
documents ensure housekeeping occurs appropriately.
Some of the house keeping monitoring procedures are as follows:-
1.Cleaning of the filters and the dryers, diarise cleaning of the filter on heaters to meet
the manufacturer’s demand.
2.Regular cleaning of the toilets and the staff rooms.
3. Regular cleaning of the eating areas, storerooms, storage cup board.
4. Using of the signs to alert the slippery surfaces.
All these should be maintained in order to ensure a proper housekeeping.
2. Do you think your service policies and procedures link clearly with housekeeping
monitoring duties? Is there's a process, checklist or monitoring guide available?
Explain your answer
The service policies provided aims to ensure that the house monitoring duties have been
done properly. A number of ways have been discussed in the above answer. Such a
monitoring guide or the checklist would help in keeping record of the house hold
monitoring tasks.
Practice Task 7
1. Is the form the same as the one used for children? If not, what are the differences?
The service policies and the procedures are absolutely different for the children. The
severity of the hazard totally depends upon the age. The hazard which can be
detrimental to the child might not be detrimental to an adult. Therefore, the policies are
different according to the age group.

2. Do the documents reflect the information discussed in this section? Explain what you
found
The documents do reflect the information on hazard prevention policies for children.
Childcare providers are always involved in providing a safe and protective environment.
They ensure the well-being of the children in their childcare service centres. The
different safety service policies that are present modify the environment, for modifying
the behaviour and children activity. These policies ensure that all parents and educators
should constantly monitor and supervise the children. They should teach injury-
preventive behaviours to the children. They should follow safety actions, make parents
know about safety policies, use devices like electric outlet plugs and smoke alarms and
practice daily safety check routines. Using specific care plans for children with special
needs and rehearsing drills or role-play will decrease the likelihood of any hazards.
Practice Task 8
1. List the health and safety consultative activities that currently occur in your service.
 Substitution of the hazardous items with the one which are less hazardous.
 Isolation of the hazard to for eliminating risk of injury.
 Addition of steps to the change table so that children can walk up instead of
needing to be lifted.
 Provision of the PPE gloves to prevent infection.
2. For each of the activities, identify the roles you could take to encourge the work tam
to participate and contribute?
 One can work as supervisors in order to substitute the hazardous items.
 I can play a role by discussing the need with my peer workers to facilitate the
process.
 Can take initiative in bringing the issues in front of the managers and the heads.
3. Choose one organisational policy or procedure that relates to a health and safety area
at your workplace. Briefly explain how you would share this information to your co-
workers.
Illness or infectious diseases policy.
The information can be disseminated by group discussions, distribution of the leaflets,
raising the topic in online platforms and raising the topic in front of the executive heads.
