A safe workplace will help employees to give their best performance and work without worrying
about their safety. An approach which is proactive in nature helps in addressing the issues before
they become potential reasons of danger for the company. Company should inspect or analyse
the workplace space to understand different types of danger in the workplace of an organisation.
Safety is the main reason why an employee chooses an organisation irrespective of the salary
because safety is more important than salary and everybody wants to feel safe while working in
the company.
In this study, the safety of employees in Home Hardware company which is consulted by the
Workplace Health and Safety organisation which analyses the workplace of companies and rate
them whether they are suitable place for work or not. This company is an Australia’s third largest
retail chain for hardware and it is owned by Metcash. It sells paint, power tools, general
hardware and products for gardens. This company wants to merge with Home Saver Company
which is located in South Australia. The stores of this brand are independently owned and
operated over 290 stores which are located in Australia.

Introduction
In this report, there will be discussion in Workplace Health and Safety, their importance and how
they can help companies to keep their workplace neat and safe for the workers. It also explains
the amendment done by the board of Workplace Health and safety for the betterment of the
employees and company. This report will describe about how WHS can lead to the growth of the
company.
1. Description of the features of the proposed WHS management system, including
policies to include and what adaptations and amendments are required to existing
policies and procedures.
WHS is known as Workplace Health and Safety and it is generally associated with the health and
safety measures of the stakeholders in the workplace from any kind of hazards occurred in the
workplace from work activities (Allender, et. al., 2011). The features of the WHS management
systems are as follows:
Safety policies and procedures: The policies and procedures related to the health and safety
measures are important as it includes all the description of the organizations safety
infrastructure of the organizations.
Monitoring the risk: The monitoring of the risk that threatens the workplace is important in
order to deal with the risk of the organizations and protect the organizations from further
risks (Bai, et. al. 2013).
The policies and procedures of WHS are as follows:
Hazardous Manual Task Policy: The hazardous manual task policy is a policy related to
the injuries or diseases occurred suddenly or over time at the workplace during work
activities. This policy is established to lower the risk of hazardous injuries occurring at the
workplace.
Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment Policy: This policy includes safety measures
for the people in the workplace with the help of personal protective equipment such as

gloves, safety helmets, eye protectors, aprons, boots or shoes, hearing protectors and
breathing protectors. This measure help to protect the body of the people from disease and
injuries (Fabius, et. al., 2013).
The required adaptation and assumption required in the success of the WHS policy and

2. How the proposed WHS management system meets legislative requirements.
Legislative requirement refers to the requirement of an act in relation to the work activities at the

stakeholders. The WHS management system meets the legislative requirement by covering the
following elements:
Health and safety policy and commitment: The health and safety policy of the workplace
are important to ensure the health and safety of the stakeholders in the workplace. (Grace,

Health prevention planning process: Planning process is necessary for fulfilling the health
and safety policy of the organizations. The planning process helps to prevent the health of

The roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of PCBU are that PCBU are required in WHS in
order to ensure the safety and health at the workplace. The roles of the PCBU at the WHS are as
follows:
Provision of the working environment safe eliminating risk to the health at the workplace.
Duty to consult with other duty holders at the workplace.
The roles, responsibilities and accountabilities of officers are to manage corporate risks which
include safety risks and health risks. The roles of officers at the WHS are follows:

The physical resources are those tangible items that are necessary and take space, have value and

Financial resources are required in the organization for covering overall financial funds of a safe
workplace. In WHS the financial resources are used in the workplace for covering the cost of
clothing, first-aid, warning signs, firefighting equipment, etc.
The total budget of WHS is approved around $1 billion. The Chief Financial Officer (CHF) has
signed contract for product and services up to $500,000. The resources such as senior managers
cost about $200 million hourly, store manager about $100 million hourly, team leaders about $60
million hourly, workers about $25 million hourly, WHS consultants about $60 million hourly
and training room about $50 million hourly. This all together the total cost that the WHS
proposed for the safety and health policy at the workplace (Logasakthi and Rajagopal, 2013).

The organizational requirement states the requirements which are needed by the organization for
establishing the progress strategies for the future. The organizational requirement includes
strategic plans, management of the organizations, consultation with staff and to determine the
other organization requirements (Nowbar, et. al., 2014).
The WHS management system meets organizational requirement by the following ways:
WHS Legislation: The WHS legislation consist regulation and codes of practices. It’s
generally concerned with the safety and health of the workers at the workplace. The
legislation sates a number of policies which undertake the responsibility to ensure the
health and safety. The WHS legislation includes the following elements for the safety and
health policy of the organizations:
First aid.
Chemicals.
Hazardous manual task.
Managing health and safety risks.

The WHS legislation implies planned and systematic approach to organizations for dealing with
the appropriate health and safety policy. It also set a target of reducing 30% injuries and diseases
at the workplace.
