Introduction
From the term Homeland Security it can be determined that it refers to the effort
applied by the national security team to ensure that the homeland is safe from the terrorism.
The security team are always active in enhancing the security of the United States. The
department of Homeland Security focuses on the public security by preventing the terror
attacks take necessary actions during the unfortunate attacks. This report is aimed at
explaining the Homeland Security Strategy and how it can be used during the critical
missions.
HLS strategy
Strategy to secure the homeland is the most essential step to be followed by the
Nation. The strategy assist the entire Nation to proceed towards improving the security
measures. HLS strategy acts as a guide to enhance the security as well as serves a framework
for the inputs of the strategy (Muguruza, 2017). The objectives of the strategy involves
minimization of vulnerabilities to terrorism, proper mitigation plan to recover from the
attacks and most important one is to anticipate and prevent the terrorist attacks.
Critical mission areas:
There are various critical mission areas which focuses on the above mentioned
objectives (Fibich, Horauer & Obermaisser, 2017). Intelligence department plays a major in
detecting the terrorist activities therefore, the intelligence department of the Nation always
need to be aware of the activities that can be harmful for the nation so that preventive
measures can be taken. The strategy of the security should be aligned with the transportation
security, protection of infrastructure, emergency steps and defence.

3HOMELAND SECURITY STRATEGY
September 11 attacks led to major losses of lives and properties therefore, the
enhancement of the critical mission is very important (Laws & Prideaux, 2017). After the
attacks, the investigation was highly focused to identify the attackers and their motives.
Protecting the infrastructure and assets of the Nation became important objectives for the
Nation. In the world of digitization, the daily lives of human beings have become dependent
on the Internet and Networks hence, protecting this infrastructure is also important to provide
security.
Enhanced initiative:
The major initiative undertaken by the Department of HLS was Maritime Domain
Awareness its abbreviation is MDA which was the most critical component of the security. To
implement the MDA, Automatic Identification System was used to protect the overseas ports by
increasing the border protection of overseas.
The initiative of MDA came into existence in the year 2001 for the national security. During
the attacks of 26/11 there were some pain points in the initiative which includes, improper
surveillance of the marine domain and lack of coordination between the agencies. The purpose of this
major initiative was to prevent the sub-surface threats and improving the sea-based weapons and
detecting the underwater threats.

4HOMELAND SECURITY STRATEGY
The current status of the Marine Security has been improved with the active participation of
the Authorities, agencies and marines industries (Chintoan-Uta & Silva, 2017). The recent
technological development includes, tracking facility of the AIS system based on satellite
interrogation, detecting of the vessels can also be done by Vessel Traffic Service in case the AIS
system fails to detect. Vessel Traffic Service is tracking system in which radar is used during
detection. The technology of Radio-frequency Identification has been applied by the Smart and
Secure Trade-lanes to prevent the issues relevant to marine security. There are various improved
initiatives that has been undertaken by the Department of HLS.
The approaches that have been applied to evaluate the vulnerabilities are effective enough to
address all the issues that are identified. Installation of sensor platforms with the help of Federal
agencies has been proved to be effective preventing the issues.
Conclusion
Therefore, from this report it can concluded that the Homeland Security Strategy has
various objectives that need to be implemented and maximum of the objectives have already
been applied to improve the security system. Major initiatives has been undertaken by the
Security Department to ensure that the Nation is secured. The Agencies actively cooperate
with the Federal Authorities so that the proper measures can be taken in ever aspect.
