ESSAY
HOMELESSNESS IN MELBOURNE
It has been seen that in Australia people are gradually become homeless and it is mostly
concentrated on the capital cities which particularly includes Sydney and Melbourne and this
problem has been increasing day by day and in over 15 years. Homelessness is becoming more
of the urban phenomenon which is wide spreading across the city. The Australian has always
been the country which have huge sum of wealth and proper standards of living in the cities of
Australian but at the same time it has been homelessness constantly becoming a disease as a
symptom of social inequality. The data which was collected in the year 2011 shows that there is
an increase in 8% of homelessness in just five years by the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2012.
The problem of homelessness which is arising have taken the interest of social workers,
government person , homeless people and the people of community who care about the other
people and wants to create difference in the society. The main issues which arise in homelessness
are affordability and financial issues to rent or lease the house, unemployment and addictions
related to drugs and alcohol (Rogers & Ethridge,2013). The government has evaluated these
issues then they find out the solution to resolve these issues such as housing services which
involves less amount, opportunities for employment and other services which lesser the impact
of homelessness in Melbourne.
The stable accommodation in Melbourne is very difficult to find as there is lesser availability and
affordability of housing. The homeless people who are living in Melbourne having lesser options
for housing as there are not earning a good amount of money to afford a house. The buying and
renting of house requires the financial resources and the people put main emphasis on financial
resources instead of social, cultural and health related aspects in the life of individual. The
people are not able to have long term accommodation due to the lack of financial resources
which is acting as major problem and tends to cause homelessness (Laradi, 2017).
The Government of Australia tends to contribute in the economy by forming the policies and
providing subsidies to those businesses who are already earning in billions or millions which

implies that the rich is becoming richer day by day and poor is becoming poor day by day and
leads the increase in rate of homelessness in Melbourne. The government should charge them
taxes and also adds the corporate social responsibility in their work culture which in return will
contribute in the betterment of life of those homeless people in Melbourne.
We have seen that the financial issues are acting as a cause in the homelessness but there is
another factor which is also contributing in the homelessness is unemployment. If people are
properly employed and earning a stable amount of time will provide healthy and proper lifestyle
to their family, accommodation and proper standard of living. The employment and housing
affordability are interrelated with each other as unemployed people will never be able to provide
the resources to their families which are required for normal living. The employment ensures the
financial stability, positive attitude towards everything and set standards of living which will
contribute in the economy in the proper manner (Alnabhani& Yang, 2016).
The addiction of anything tends to destroy in the one way or the other and the other cause for
homelessness is people are having strong addiction of drugs and alcohol which tends to destroy
their life in the long run. It has been observed from the researches that homelessness is
interconnected with those who are addicted to the drugs and alcohol. There are number of
surveys which are conducted by the government which shows that the one-fifth of the young
people is consuming drugs and alcohol making their way towards the homelessness. This implies
that the addiction of drugs and alcohol is contributing in the situation of homelessness. The
excessive consumption of these things causes health and social issues and it results in people are
harming their families for the money and getting involved in gambling, becoming thief’s etc. The
social issue includes racism, discrimination and affects in mental health etc.
There are various not for profit organization which works for these homeless people to provide
them shelter and at the same time they also ensures the betterment in their lives. Their main
purpose is to provide them the basic necessities and accommodation so that they can spend their
life in the proper manner. They also ensures that the homeless people should get proper
employment opportunities which makes their life easy instead of depending on donations and
charities and on government to take the necessary steps for their development (Albu, 2018).

The Big issues tend to create the employment opportunities for the people who are undergoing
through the condition of homelessness such as Street Magazine Enterprises, soccer programmers
etc. There are various housing services which plays important role towards the homeless people
and helps in prevention of homelessness and its way effective provides benefits to those people.
The issues of homelessness can be consumption of drugs and alcohol, unemployment, financial
issues etc. can be properly taken care by the involvement of government entities and other people
who do social services (Costel& Elena-Cristina, 2013).
It has been concluded that the appropriate housing facility is acts as the human need which is
very destructive in the Melbourne and people are having issues in the matter of affordability. The
researches have even shown that the consumption of drugs and alcohol also the major factors in
the affordability and unemployment which is gradually increasing the situation of homelessness
in Melbourne. There are many people who have come forward for providing the long term and
short term accommodation to homeless people and at the same time they are ready to provide
them employment in every manner which can make their life easy. The homelessness from the
Melbourne cannot get vanished in easy way but it requires the attention of government
individuals and other members of the society to contribute in the betterment of those homeless
people who are residing in the Melbourne and take necessary steps towards the same and helps in
making the Melbourne viable city for the people (Stittleburg,2012).
