Finding 1
Honey monster puffs has shown in the last few years a real involvement in their practices.
Launched by Quaker Oats as Sugar Puffs in 1957 and bought by the big bear company in
2007. Honey monster puffs have been through lots of changes. The most important one in
2016 Breck company took Honey Monster puffs under license and decided the company
should lowered sugar to 22 grams for 100 grams of cereals (lowered by 25%). The Honey
monster Wheat puffs are also fortified with vitamins and are high in fibre. The Company is
on a great momentum of transparency, as written on Honey Monster Puffs official Website
“Nothing scary in here we’re not afraid to show our true colors”.

then by covering them with honey and sugar. From the lowering of sugar through years and
the change of company name, Honey Monster puffs shows interest in a better way of
operating.

Sustainability in our days has a different meaning than few years ago. Before, companies
would value sustainability to seek long term financial value, now the model has changed.
From the improvement of the resources and practices used in the chain value to more
environmentally friendly ones, or the improvement of the wellbeing of employees and local
communities. Sustainability is becoming crucial in the development of a company. It has
many advantages for the communities and the environment, and it can also be a source of
profit. But to incorporate sustainability in a business they are few steps to follow.
The first step would be to assign and inform people of the new organization goal. Investors,
Employees and managers must all feel responsible of the mission. This will also be important
for the second step which is the collection of the data. Nonetheless, before putting people in
charge of the changes you must be sure they have time and ability to work on the company’s
objectives out of daily work.
As said, Gathering data is one of the following steps to implement Sustainability. You
should report every material and process used in your chain value. Those information’s will
be found in many departments of the company and will require time and research for
managers and their teams. This will help the company for the following step which is the
identification of issues to create an action plan. (Findings 2)
Therefore, the collection of data is very valuable to reach the sustainability goal as it
has on other advantage, it will bring transparency to the company. More companies use
systems reporting their level of sustainability from their environmental and social impact to
governance practices (ESG practices). Those reports are added value to a company and attract
consumers and investors, as stated in the article from Matt Ellis “Why and how to make your
business sustainable”, “ between 2012 and 2014, money managers became 3.4 times more
likely to select a business that factored ESG principles into its corporate direction.” (……..).

Findings 3:
Once the data is collected, the following step would be to identify issues to create an action
plan for improvement. Some organizations uses a system called Sustainable Solution Steering
“to evaluate its product vis-a vis sustainability needs and trends and to devise action plans for
marketing or product changes through R&D.” (How to make sustainibilty every employees
responsibility).
To begin, our team started by looking at Honey Monster Puffs packaging methods. We saw
that the cardboard box used for the 520g and 500g cereal box, and the plastic used to contain
the 520g box of Honey monster puffs were recyclable. This is a great effort to sustainability
but there is a problem. In fact, the plastic used to protect the cereals will not be recycled by
recycling organizations because it was in contact with food. Actually, they are many different
types of plastic and plastic suppliers that are named as eco-friendly, but they all have their
limitations. The choice of suppliers involved in the value chain is very important to increase
the sustainability of the company. The internal footprint of the company is one of the most
important to look at first but to do so, some more in depth researches needed to be made.
Thus, to reduce the footprint of packaging’s, Greenco recommend the use of bio
plastic that is made from marine or plant-based material. In fact, comparatively to
biodegradable plastics “bioplastic generally do not produce a net increase in carbon dioxide
gas when they break down […]. PLA, for example, produces almost 70 percent
less greenhouse gases when it degrades in landfills.” (Woodford, C. (2008/2018) Bioplastics.

polylactide acid is one of the only bioplastic that can be used to contain food. Moreover, it is
compostable, recyclable and can be dissolved in a few weeks.
This new material could reduce the real footprint of The Honey Monster Puffs
packaging and make it more labeled. Labels are a sign of quality and attract consumers. A
reminder that a company which has great practices and can prove it with labels, increases the
value of their product and thus attracts more customers.
Now that issues and solutions had been identified the action plan can be put in place.
Don’t forget that each small improvement to sustainability in the corporations is important.

a. Having a supportive corporate culture is highly important in order for a business to
work correctly. When there is a positive culture in a Company, employees tend to be
more engage and successful in their work. Introducing this type of culture in Honey
Monster Puff will have many advantages. It will encourage employees to have a healthy
way of living that will be reflected on their work, as they will feel more connected with

the Company. A sustainable culture will be a competitive advantage due to high-quality
employees. A healthy and gratified employee increases its performance therefore, the

costs. Moreover, this will drive to customer satisfaction, so the productivity of the

b. Honey Monster Puff should introduce the following wellness programs in order to
achieve the supportive corporate culture intended. First of all, provide healthy nutritional

physical activity like for example organize company marathons, that will not only
motivate the workers but also improve their feeling of fellowship. Moreover, provide
employees a minimum of 20% discount in the gym, so that they feel stimulated to

2018). Stress is huge concern nowadays. There are many ways to help employees reduce

Finally, creating anonymous surveys for employees to sincerely give their opinions is the
best way to ameliorate the company´s culture.

corporate culture, its essential to reward healthy behaviors. Rewarding healthy and
sportive behavior will reduce stress, create cohesiveness in the workplace and motivate

advantages such as an extension of their holidays, bonuses, gifts, cash or any type of
tangible rewards. In addition, provide positive feedback will maintain them motivated. A

value of the company. This step will be helpful to fit with the ESG principles. ESG
(Environment, social, governance) principles are very beneficial for companies as it is a proof
of sustainability and transparency it attracts investors.
After collecting the data, the company should identify issues and points to improve. Honey
Wheat puffs should then put in place an action plan, the system named Sustainable Solution
Steering will compare and analyse all sorts of data and help in the decision-making process.
GreenCo couldn’t help in the analysing of the internal methods of operating for the moment
but we did an analysis of the packaging. The findings showed that recyclable plastic is used

for the conservation of the cereals while it will not be considered recyclable for a plastic
company. Thus, we concluded that the use of bioplastic would be preferable. It is made from
marine or plant-based material, which will reduce the real footprint of packaging but will also
be the occasion to add a label on the packaging. In fact, labels are a sign of quality and will
help the costumers identify the brand and product.
In addition, the findings shown the importance of communicating all information and
changes to the employees so that they feel engaged with the company. To get more in depth
with the employees’ engagement the findings put in light the importance of introducing a
supportive corporate culture. Actually, encouraging the employees to adopt a healthy way of
living will be reflected in their motivation and productivity.
Wellness programs are a great way to get a positive corporate culture. Providing healthy
nutritional food, promoting physical activity with discounts for example are ways to reduce
the levels of stress of employees. To improve results the company should recognised efforts
and reward employees.
Recommendations:
1) Honey monster puffs should follow the steps mentioned to improve their
sustainability practices. Assign and Inform people, collect data, identify issues, create
and put in place an action plan
2) Create a sustainability department in the company that will inform and assign
responsibilities. The people in charge should have the time and capacity to be
involved in the sustainability goal.
3) One of the major parts is the collection of data, this will need the involvement of all
parts of the company. Honey Wheat monster should report the most information
possible regarding electricity and water consumption, resources used, governance and
suppliers practices etc. As said, Greenco did not have enough information yet on the
production of Honey Wheat Puffs in the factory to offer concrete solutions on that
side. Nonetheless those data are important and should be collected.
4) Improve transparency and organise the collection of data by trying to fit in the ESG
practices. We should organise a meeting with Daniel Ludwig our specialist in Social
Responsibility practices and Environmental Law to know what data is needed and
how to put the system in place.
5) On the same path, Mr. Ludwig will give us more details to evaluate the company’s
sustainability performance based on the Sustainable Solution Steering system.
6) Think of changing the plastic cereal box supplier, as mentioned recyclable plastic is
not the one fitting for your use of the plastic. We can put you in contact with few
European companies producing polylactide acid bioplastic bags.
7) Honey monster wheat puffs should also discuss with the marketing department to put
in place eco-friendly labels fitting their new practices on the packaging.
8) To support a positive corporation culture and improve productivity of employees
Honey wheat puffs should implement some wellness programs. By providing
healthier food at lunch and promote physical activity.
