Nursing Project: Evaluating Honey for Oral Mucositis Treatment

Background
Oral mucositis is referred to as ulcerative lesions and erythematous related
with the oral mucosa which has been observed within the cancer patients
who receives chemotherapy or the radiation therapy. The key significant

radiation therapy. The patient who faces oral mucositis tends to impose high

evaluating if the honey is considered to be effective in the promotion of
healing of oral mucositis among the patients who receives chemotherapy or
the radiation therapy.

This research study is considered to be highly significance and relevant
because it helps in improving the nursing practice to treat patients with oral
mucositis. The key relevant results associated with the review is useful in
complementing and informing the related current nursing practice for
effectively managing the oral mucositis among the patients. Honey is
considered to be highly useful in improving the health of the patient and
improve the quality of life.

Is honey effective in promoting healing of oral mucositis among patients
receiving chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy?

 Honey is considered to be useful in the prevention of the oral mucositis
among the children who has been undergoing the treatment of
chemotherapy.
 Coffee plus honey vs the topical steroid within the treatment of the
chemotherapy which induce oral mucositis.
 The effective use related with the thyme honey in order to minimize the
radiation who has been induce of oral mucositis within the neck and head
cancer patients.
 To critically evaluate the effect of the tropical application associated with
the pure honey related with the chemo radiation induced with the oral
mucositis and related clinical benefits to improve the quality of life within
patients of oral squamous cell carcinoma (Howlader and et.al., 2019).

Goal 1: To critically evaluate if Honey is considered to be useful in the prevention of the oral
mucositis among the children who has been undergoing the treatment of chemotherapy.
Strategies: Wide degree of non- pharmacological and the pharmacological treatment options are highly
available related with the oral mucositis.
Method: The quasi set of experimental study has been carried out which targets 83 children who has
attended polyclinics and the clinics for the chemotherapy.
Result: The key severity linked with the oral mucositis linked with the children is significantly less. It has
been found that the oral mucositis recovery period within the experimental group is shorted when
compared with the oral group (Bulut and Tüfekci, 2016).
Findings: Providing continuous oral care by giving honey to the children who has been undergoing
chemotherapy is useful in preventing oral mucositis and helps in accelerating the recovery.
Goal 2: To critically evaluate if coffee plus honey vs the topical steroid within the treatment of
the chemotherapy which induce oral mucositis.
Background: Oral mucositis is considered to be as one of the key common complication related with
the cancer chemotherapy.
Method: Double blinded randomized clinical trial has been carried out where the 75 eligible adult
participants has been selected.
Result: The study states that that the 3 treatments i.e., 600 gms of the product, 300 gms of honey and
300 gms of honey and 20gms related with the instant coffee are very useful in reducing the severity
(Raeessi, and et.al., 2014).
Findings: The treatment of the oral mucositis by the combination of the coffee and honey is considered
to be highly effective.
Strategies: Support group and professional service helps in providing extra set of assistance and helps
in supporting the staff which helps in gaining relevant degree of resources and data related with subject
matter.
Goal 3: To critically evaluate the effective use related with the thyme honey in order to minimize
the radiation who has been induce of oral mucositis within the neck and head cancer patients.
Background: Oral mucositis which has been induced by the radiation is referred to as the key side
effects at the time of treatment related with the patients of head and neck cancer.
Method: Randomized control trial has been used where 72 head and neck cancer patients has been
targeted. They were further categorized into 2 groups i.e., intervention group with thyme honey rinse
and control group with saline rinse.
Result: The patients who were in the intervention group has low degree of objective assessment linked
with oral mucositis and helps in improving the global health (Charalambous and et.al., 2018).
Findings: There is a positive effect of thyme honey management for the radiation which helps in
inducing oral mucositis and also improve the quality of life among head and neck cancer patients.
Strategies: Availability of the relevant set of resources by getting complete support from the family and
key professionals is of key relevance importance.
Goal 4: To critically evaluate the effect of the tropical application associated with the pure
honey related with the chemo radiation induced with the oral mucositis and related clinical
benefits to improve the quality of life within patients of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
Method: The single blinded randomized control trial has been carried out among the 40 patients. It is
divided into 2 groups of 20 patients each i.e., case group and control group.
Result: There seems to be no tract of carcinoma in control and case group. The quality of life was lower
in case group when compared with the control group.
Findings: Honey helps in combatting the key relevant ill effects associated with the radiation which
induces oral mucositis (Howlader and et.al., 2019).
Strategies: Multi- discipline approach is useful because it helps in incorporating the various key
elements to improve the inter professional skills and helps in improving the overall capability of the
professionals.

What still needs to be known (gaps)
 Limiting the recruitment of the participants who belong to
the diverse group were not able to effectively take part
within the research (Charalambous and et.al., 2018). There
seems to be limited access to the participants which
restricted the study outcomes.
 Lack of evaluation by the clinical experts is considered to be
as the key major gap related with the study. However, the
involvement of the strong leadership practice is useful for
presenting varied different set of results.
Recommendations to address gaps
 The future research study in turn significantly requires the
incorporation of the highly experienced clinical professional
which helps in effectively treating the patients who has oral
mucositis by applying effective nursing practice (Bulut and
Tüfekci, 2016).
 Moreover, the future research also include diverse range of
participants related with the diverse sample groups to attain
better results and outcomes related with the area of
research.
 High degree of research is needed to be carried out by
applying relevant approaches to treat the patients who has
oral mucositis by applying effective nursing practice
(Raeessi, and et.al., 2014).
