HORIZONTAL VIOLENCE IN NURSING 2
Bullying/Horizontal violence is a major issue in the healthcare field. It is estimated that
about 98% of all employees experience have encountered horizontal violence at one point in
their career (Dalton, 2016). This article is important because it touches on all aspects of
Horizontal violence in healthcare industry. In particular, it clearly defines horizontal bullying and
provides recent statistics for prevalence and impact .Horizontal violence can be managed through
the introduction of a workplace bullying policy for employees. In addition, organizations need to
put the necessary enforcement measures to ensure that the policy is adhered to by all employees.
From this article, I have learnt a few aspects relevant to Bullying in nursing. Most
importantly, I have learnt that Bullying is more prevalent in the nursing profession compared to
other industries. I have also learnt that horizontal violence can have a negative impact on the
productivity of a nurse, lead to depression or anxiety. Finally, horizontal violence reduces the
ability of a nurse to focus thus leading to poor patient outcomes (Dalton, 2016).
I was more surprised by the less number of organizations with a workplace bullying
policy, about 50%, and the overall lack of seriousness in enforcing the policy in organizations
which already have the policy (Dalton, 2016).
A key lesson on addressing bullying is the adoption of an appropriate approach. In this
regard, it is important that organizations focus on the issue proactively. This can be achieved
through the establishment of a code of conduct for all employees, and ensuring that the code of
conduct is adhered too by every employee (Dalton, 2016).
