Executive Summary
Hospital information system is extremely useful for the health care professionals and for the
patients because it store the important data related to the patient’s medical history which
helps in providing the best treatment from the hospitals. It is very cost effective and
information can also be retrieved very easily. It offers many advantages to the users for
making their health safe and secure. However HIS has some limitations like threat of
revealing of confidential information. Security of the data is also a major concern.
Despite of having some limitation the HIS is very useful because it improves the patient care
services and help the persons in maintaining and monitoring their health related services. This
information technology is very essential because it is helpful for the management and for the
patients by providing transparency and authenticity in the services of the hospital.

Introduction
In this assignment, an analysis has been done over the process and benefits of hospital
management system. A focus is provided over the different features and aspects of hospital
information system. The benefits of the information system are highlighted inside the
assignment. The limitations, threats and precautions needed for hospital information system
is also analysed in the assignment. The benefits related to the access of the information of
medical history and records of the patients is also analysed in this section.
Introduction of hospital information system
Hospital information system is a type of technology which focuses over the information
related to all the aspects of hospital. It usually covers all the departments of the hospital like:
medical information related to the data of patients, administrative information, financial data
and legal information.
Components of this technology
 Clinical information system
 Management information system
 Patients information system
 Patient’s management and patients accounting (Chie, 2010).
A specialised technology named as hospital information system is need to be established in
order to maintain an effective information system. All the data related to the medical history
of the patient is recorded into this information system. This system is a very sophisticated
method to communicate and co-ordinate with the various groups of people inside the hospital
(Mobisoft, 2019).
Analysis of various aspects of Hospital Information System
(1) Easy access of the medical history of the patient
By using the hospital information system, the health care professionals can receive the history
of any patient at any time. The medical record of the history of the patients is stored in the

databases of the health information system. Sometimes it’s very urgent and important to
retrieve the medical history of the patient so that the doctors can provide the suitable
treatment of the patients after analysing their medical history. The test reports of the patient
need to be checked for providing him a best solution that is why hospital management system
is important to manage and store the information of the patients (healthcare, 2020).
Information related to various drugs and their consumption is also stored in the databases of
health information system. The personal and professional information related to the
healthcare professionals is also stored in the hospital management system. Duty timings,
designations and job responsibilities also mentioned inside the health information system so
that the administrative department of the hospital ensures about having the sufficient number
of health care professionals at sufficient time. For proper running of healthcare professionals
of all the departments of hospital, the need of hospital information system is necessary
(healthcare, 2020).
(2) Integration of workflow
Hospital information system is necessary for the integration of the work of all the
departments. Co-ordination is the major task for providing best medical services to the clients
of the hospital and that is why the need of information related to treatments, history, charges
and facilities of the hospital should be listed properly inside the information software so that
it can be easily retrieved whenever required (Mobisoft, 2019).
(3) Helps in DSS (Decision Support System) of the hospital
By providing sufficient and necessary information about each and every department, the
health information system helps in decision support system of the hospital. It provides a lot of
help to the all managerial authorities of the hospital in taking decision and framing policies
for the better management practices of the hospital (healthcare, 2020).
(4) Authenticity of the information
The information which is stored in the databases of the health information software is highly
authentic. No one can manipulate the data until a very serious carelessness is done by IT
experts. The necessary information is stored inside the databases and the hospital
management is ensuring about the authenticity of the information (MN Shaukat, 2019).

cost effective services (healthcare, 2020).
(6) Reducing scope of error
With the help of hospital information system, the information can be retrieved easily and that
is why there is not any scope of error occurred because of the efficient and timely
management of the data. All the data stored in the software is very safe and easy to be
retrieved that is why the error may be reduced. It can be said that the safety of the patients
can be improved by reducing the error in the treatment process (Walsham, 2020).
Sometimes, because of the improper and insufficient information received by the patient, the
doctor may provide ineffective treatment to the patient but by knowing the exact medical
history of the patient, the healthcare professionals are ensured about effective and correct
treatment for the patient which is very much essential for the health of the patient (Oswal,
2019).
(7) Improved the care of patients
The care of the patients may also be improved by using health information system. Past
record of the medical history of the patients is also very beneficial in dealing with some
crucial diseases like cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases. The patients will be able to
receive proper treatment on the bases of their past record of medical history. Proper reports
related to diagnosis of the diseases and the details of the treatments are necessary to be
accessed by the healthcare professionals whenever required. The care of the patients is very
much depends upon the information of the patients received by the healthcare professionals
that is why hospital information system is very much important for the effective patient care
services provided by the hospital (Yousef Mehdipour, 2013).
(8) Improved satisfaction of the patients
The patient’s satisfaction may be improved by receiving timely treatment. The
communication and interaction level may also be improved with the help of health

Health information system provides a platform to create a better communication services with
patient, health experts and administrative department of the hospital. The administrative
department of hospital may ensure about availability of the health experts to treat the various
patients with effectiveness (Mobisoft, 2019).
(9) Transparency in the medical services provided by hospital
Hospital information system provides easy access of information related to the patients in a
very convenient manner. All the medical bills and expenses related to treatment, tests and
medicines are clearly visible with the help of hospital management system that is why a lot of
transparency may receive by the patients as well as by the medical practitioners with the help
of hospital information system (MN Shaukat, 2019).
(10) Scheduling of patients
The appointments have been booked and the meeting time of the patients also scheduled with
the help of hospital information system. It provides a clear access of the information related
to meet the patient with health care professionals and save the time of the patients. Health
information system helps the patients by providing them exact information related to meeting

(11) Monitoring of the condition of health of the patients
With the help of the information saved in the information system, the monitoring can be done
of the health of the patients. Sometimes in the treatment of chronic diseases, checking and
analysing the medical history of the patients is very necessary for providing a better treatment
to the clients. Treatments of some specific diseases are analysed with respect to time so that
the changes in the health of the patients may be improved. Timely check-ups and the quality
of the medicines may be assessed with respect to time by using special features of health

Importance of the technology of health information system
The health information system is very much important for the quick and effective
management of the hospital. The health information system is highly useful not only for the

analysing the health care data and provide meaningful information to the healthcare
professionals so that they can save their time and put all their efforts for improving the health
of the patients. It helps in improving the patient’s care. Hospital information system is very
beneficial in obtaining all essential information by using effective features of the information

Limitations of health care information system
Despite of having enormous benefits, health information system deals with many
complexities and challenges. The hospital information system is sometimes complex in
dealing and retrieving the information. Security of the hospital information system is very
crucial task for the IT experts of the hospital (GJ Kuperman, 2013).
The health care professional and even the managerial authorities need to depend over the IT
experts for having the access of the information. However it is a very time saving method but
it deals with a lot of complexities and duplicity in the stored information. The hardware also
needs maintenance with respect to time. Additional cost is always bear by the company
related to maintain and ensuring about proper functioning of the IT infrastructure (D Beßler,
2020).
Viruses and cyber-crimes are also a major problem of the health information system of the
hospital (A Horvat, 2020). Loss of important data and threat of losing confidential
information related to the patients and the hospital is always at risk in the health information
system of the Company. Sometimes the confidential information can be received by any
person by having access of IT system of the hospital. That is why a lot of care is needed to
deal with IT system of the hospital (A Fong, 2020).
Conclusion
Hospital information system is very much effective and time saving technique to manage the
work of the various departments of the hospital. It offers a lot of benefits to the hospital and

provides very effective services to the patients. All the health care professionals may receive
the advantages of the health information system in order to deliver very good patient care
services. The managerial authority of the hospital is also ensuring about having the correct

co-ordination and effective communication may be established with the help of hospital
information system.
On the bases of the above analysis, it can also be concluded that hospital management are
improving their services by using hospital information system. Not only the patients but also
the health care experts are receiving benefits for the special features of the hospital
management system.
