Introduction
The following report has been based on the project management using PMBOK
principles. The project management principles has been achieved effectively in order to
ensure the success of the business in a proper and efficient manner. Two different projects in
Australia has been selected for the completion of the report. The first one being the project of
“The Queensland Children’s Hospital” and the second one being the “The Perth
Children’s Hospital”. These two projects has been widely discussed and have been used as
the basis for the comparison of two same kinds of projects, their benefits, characteristics and
their ability to match the global standards. The research ends with a proper analysis of the
organization and has also highlighted the different lessons that needs to be learned from the
following elements.
Case 1
The Queensland Children’s Hospital
The Queensland Children’s Hospital is one of the leading hospital of Australia in
terms of child care and health services. The management of the hospital has been able to
bring together the variety of different paediatric services of three of the different leading
services of the state, the Royal Children’s hospital, the Mater Children’s Hospital and the
Queensland Paediatric cardiac services at the Prince Charles Hospital into a single state of the
art facility. The project was declared in the year 2008 and has been established to facilitate
the delivery of the hospital and the associated infrastructural development both in the present
times and in the future (childrens.health.qld.gov.au, 2019). The project is a $1.5 billion
project that represents the highest financial investment in the history of Queensland
Children’s Health Services and is one of the major health projects underway in Australia

(childrens.health.qld.gov.au, 2019). The new hospital consists of a total of 359 public beds,
12 different clinical levels and more than 80,000 meter square of clinical floor space.
The hospital has turned into a hub of the regional paediatric network and has been
leading the expert paediatric and adolescent health care facility of Queensland. In addition to
all these things, the hospital has been designed in such a manner that it acts as the central hub
of the state wide network for the different kinds of the health services concerning that of the
children. The management of the hospital has left no stone unturned in the development of
the hospital as one of the strong networks of the hospital. It has also turned out to be one of
the most important hospitals of Australia and has started attracting the foreign population for
medical purposes (childrens.health.qld.gov.au, 2019). The project to make the organization a
world class facility has been fully supported by the management of the organization as
because they have been able to relocate the existing Leukaemia Foundation facility to a
preferred site that is located between the Princess Alexandra and Mater Hospitals. The
management of the organization has also presented the users with a state of the art academic
and research facility that is used to carry out different kinds of the academic and research
facility (childrens.health.qld.gov.au, 2019). The installation of a separate tri-generation
energy plant provider has been another great advantage for the business organization. The
project was carried out in simple and disciplined steps with the briefing, planning, designing,
construction and the commissioning phases of the project.
Case 2
The Perth Children’s Hospital
The Perth Children’s Hospital is one of the new hospitals build in Australia especially
to cater the medical and health related needs of the children. The hospital is located in Perth
and is a 274-bed children hospital. To be more specific the hospital is located in Nedlands is

the result of the design partnership in between JCY Architects and Urban designers, Cox
Architecture and Billard Leece Partnership along with HKS Inc. The hospital has been
designed keeping in mind the different perspectives of the child, the new hospital replaces the
existing Princess Margaret Hospital that helps to provide the best possible clinical care for the
future generations of the organization. The future generations of the organizations needs to
ensure the success of the business in such a manner, that it serves as a solid base for the clear
and understanding of the paediatric research. The major characteristic of the hospital is that it
is focused towards the patient, family and the staffs. This particular focus helps the business
organization to easily address the different kinds of the paediatric needs and both the primary
and secondary health care services. The new organization also provides tertiary level
healthcare facilities to the children. The management of the hospital has also changed the
operations of the business as it has significantly increased the in outpatient and day stay
capacity, family facilities, mental health care facilities and many other different kinds of the
health care facilities that have been important for the organization to gain success. An
integrated research and education facility, operating theatres, neonatal intensive care beds as
well as staff amenities and retail space.
The management of Cox architecture which was totally involved with the project had
played a vital role in its completion. The key consultants of the project were Norman Disney
& Young, Aurecon whereas the contractor of the project was John Holland. The estimated
cost of completing the project was somewhere close to $1,200,000,000. The project came up
on a total area of 125,000 meter square.
Compare and contrast of the two projects
The above provided details about the two hospitals have clearly projected two of the
largest healthcare projects undertaken in Australia. Both the Queensland Children’s Hospital
as well as the Perth Children’s Hospital have been established in the last couple of years. The

planning and development of the Children’s hospital in the organization. The Perth

the national and international health care practice.
The major healthcare initiatives taken by the management of both the organizations
are almost similar in nature. The hospitals specializes in various kinds of basic as well as
complex health care facilities which includes the likes of the different kinds of the

Queensland children’s hospital is a similar kind of project that is estimated at around
$1.5billion which surely increases the importance of the project in a different manner
(newchildrenshospitalproject.health.wa.gov.au, 2019). Both the hospitals thus have more or
less similar kind of the services and specializes in providing the people with a various kind of
modern amenities and different types of the healthcare facilities.
Contrast
Though there has been a number of different similarities in between Perth Children’s
hospital and Queensland Children’s Hospital, there are a number of contrasting factors that
stands out as the clear difference in between the two hospitals of Australia. The first
difference can be cited from the size of the area of the two hospitals. The Queensland
Hospital project has come up upon a 80,000 meter square area whereas its counterpart, The
Perth Hospitals have been a much larger and bigger project by means of the area as the
project has come up on a site of land measuring around 125,000 meter square area. The
huge size which covers more than 40,000 meter square area in compared to the Queensland
Children’s Hospital area naturally has much larger space and has more facilities than that of

far more advanced in terms of technology and health care of the children. Therefore it can be
said that the Queensland Hospital is better able to take care of the complex health care cases
involving children. On the other hand other significant differences include the difference in
beds which is a 359 bed and 274 bed facilities respectively for Queensland and Perth
Children’s hospital. There are some other contrasting changes in between the two hospitals.

The management of the Queensland Hospital for Children provides unique educational
opportunities for both teaching and research, and also provides undergraduate, postgraduate-
and practitioner-level training in paediatrics. It also plays a significant role in medical

Technology”.

completely new to the target environment. The projects that follows the PMBOK guidelines
are often based on the ‘Iron Triangle’ of time/cost/quality suggests that all three aspects are
equal, but with quantitative methods for monitoring project performance, the focus is
primarily on managing cost and time. All these three qualities are extremely important for the
success of the project in a proper and effective manner. The management of the project
quality actively can easily lead to the reduction of the costs as because in such cases, the
wastage will be very less and there will be much more reduction in the time taken to
complete the project accurately and the management of the project can also makes
themselves adapted accordingly, to ensure the reworks and changes are done in a very fast
and appropriate manner to ensure business success.

The planning, organization, monitoring and the control of all the aspects of the project
along with the motivation that is generally needed to achieve the objectives of the project
safely and within the timeline, cost and maintaining all the different criterions are important
for the success of the project in the Australian market. The presence of all the three elements
in a proper way has helped to complete the following projects in a structured manner.
Effect on Project Deliverables
The achievement of the specific output can be said to be the deliverable within the
project. Both the projects were completed using the PMBOK guidelines. The basic
characteristics followed by the Project management team in charge of executing both the
projects are as follows;

The most common way to categorize the deliverables is to ensure their division into two
different parts namely the internal and the external deliverables.
 Any work that can be said to be not a part of the business is internal deliverable On the other hand any customization done to fulfil the demand of the clients is
termed as external deliverable
The internal as well as external deliverable is important for the success of the project.
The internal deliverable includes the likes of the different deliverables of the project that
includes the customization of the project and also the completion of the hospital by means of
following the local laws and guidelines of the project

Lessons that can be learnt for future projects
The post project review or the post implementation process is one of the most
important processes followed for the future business processes. The project management
activity is always implemented effectively in order to ensure the success of the business. The
project managers schedules the lessons learned activities at the end of the project. The project
that has been used here consists of the Hospital establishment projects of Perth and
Queensland children’ hospital. The hospital projects have used the PMBOK guidelines and
there have been mixed responses of success as well as failure in the project. Some of the
major lessons that have been learned includes the likes of;
a. Initiation and the planning process- The initiation and start of the different kinds of
the projects must be treated in a proper and cautious manner. Large-scale information
regarding the initiation process must be used to plan the project schedule and execute
the project in a much better manner. The success of the execution along with the
planning can be said to be helpful for the project to be undertaken.

b. Identification of the smaller projects- The lessons learned from the different earlier
projects are important sources of conducting the new projects. The use of the common
threads and the implementation of the similar methods and processes can help to
complete the new project with utmost ease and precise success. The project managers
can identify some earlier common projects and gather idea about the process by which
they were completed and the different other ways.
c. Gathering useful information- The gathering of the useful information from the
earlier project managers, employees and the stakeholders of similar kinds of the
projects can be of great help to the success of the research. The better the research on
the earlier projects, the better will be the chance of the project to gain success.
d. Determination of the Migration strategies- The mitigation strategy could be
developed by developing and changing the management process, conducting formal
business requirements, procuring appropriate skilled resources and also by obtaining
executive sign off on the project charter.
Conclusion
The following report has provided a clear and detailed information regarding two
large scale health care projects in Australia involving Queensland Childcare Hospital and
Perth Childcare Hospital. The report has provided a detailed discussion of both the hospitals
and has also presented the differences and similarities existing in between each of them. The
report has also presented the global project standards and the capability of the organizations
to meet these standards. Overall a thorough assessment of the report will help the readers to
get a transparent idea of the projects in PMBOK guidelines in a proper and effective manner.
