INTRODUCTION
In today's time, hospitality industry has become one of the key revenue generator for
economies of various countries. The aspect of contemporary industry will be described in this
report that will further explore the dynamic attributes in relation to hospitality including different
types of businesses within the sector, range of operational & functional departments and
contribution of the sector to local, national and international economies. Also, it will cover skills
required for roles within the hospitality industry.

P 1 Explore the different types of business within the hospitality industry and the diverse
products and services they offer.
Below are the various forms of business within the hospitality sector and the diverse
products and services offered by them:
Food and beverages :- this sector within the hospitality industry is professionally known
by its initials as F&B is the wider segment of this sector. This might include as simple as
bistro all the way to a high end restaurant and every catering establishment in between.
Travel a& tourism :- this business within hospitality deals with services in relation to
moving people from place to place. This is the vast sector with various key players across
the globe. The key function of this business is to encourage people to travel (Jauhari and
Bharwani, 2017).
Lodging :- it refers to accommodation for a period or a place to sleep for one or more
nights. This is also termed as a broader sector within hospitality ranging from bed and
breakfast to other services.
Recreation :- this is another form of business, as an activity that people do for rest,
relaxation and entertainment. The purpose of this activity is to refresh an individual's
body and mind.
P2 Examine a range of operational and functional departments within a chosen hospitality

Core operational departments of Hamilton's Boutique Hotel:

Housekeeping department :- this department of the hotel is very crucial department in
hospitality sector. As it is responsible for cleaning the hotel's guest rooms and public
spaces (Jones, Hillier and Comfort, 2016).
Front office department :- this refers to the command post for the reservations, bookings,
take in charge, etc. Other activities included in this are; sending mails, allocations of
rooms and so on.
Food & production department :- preparation of food is handled by this section, as it is
their responsibility to ready dishes or menus.
Core functional departments:
Marketing & selling :- it has been found that this department has become one of the most
important function of the hotel business, as it involves packaging of selling, sales,
promotion, etc.
Finance department :- this department is responsible for managing and keeping track of
many business transactions that happen in the hotel.
Safety & security department :- this is very important and essential part of the hotel
because the security of guests, workers, and property is of great concern for today's hotels
(Kandampully, Zhang and Bilgihan, 2015).
P 3 Discuss the contribution of the hospitality industry to local, national and international
economies.
Hospitality in UK is the 4th largest employer, offering more than 3.2 million direct jobs
and a further 2.8 million indirect jobs. The hospitality & the tourism sector have brought
73 billion pounds to the economy just last year only.
The biggest contribution the hospitality industry makes to economy of the country as well
as internationally is creating host of new jobs.
Availability of direct job opportunities as tour guides, planners and operators.
Moreover, indirect jobs are also created that generates income in a variety of ways.
Revenue is earned by the government, as a lot of money is put by the tourists in their
travel plans nowadays.
Another contribution is done by the sector is foreign exchange earning, to the economy of
the country (Kim, Vogt and Knutson, 2015).

Concierge :- a concierge is a person who directly communicates with the guests, offering
them with various services. Under this category there are more roles as a front office
house such as; front desk associate, guest relation manager, hotel receptionist, and so on.
Event planner :- an individual who is responsible for planning for conferences, meetings,
celebrations and weddings. This is further categorised into event manager, meeting
manager, etc.
Chef :- it is a managerial role that includes a lot of work behind the scenes in the
Hamilton's Boutique Hotel. Persons in this role cook, sous chefs, etc.
Hotel general manager :- the manager of Hamilton's Boutique Hotel is a person that
ensures that a hotel is running smoothly.
Housekeeper :- under this, an individual is responsible for maintaining high standards of
cleanliness throughout a hotel or other hospitality venue (Radojevic, Stanisic and Stanic,
2015).
P 5 Examine the skills required for roles with the hospitality industry and current skill's shortage.
Skills required :-
High level customer service :- interacting with customers is the common role in
hospitality environment.
Communication skills :- working in the hotel can be both physically and mentally
demanding. Hence, it required a lot of communication between guests, staff and
management.
Problem solving :- this includes building creative, innovative and practical solutions
which can be created by showing initiative in finding resolving problems.
Team work :- this involves the ability to work efficiently and effectively as a team and
understanding each other's roles in serving the need of guests.
Organise :- in order to stay on top of the multitude of tasks, an individual needs to be
organised and multitasking without difficulty (7 Essential Skills for a Career in

Shortage of skills :-

Interpersonal skills :- this includes being able to interact effectively both orally and in
written, I which I lack and this might unable me to make positive connections.
Another skills in which I lack for working in a talent management team, is flexibility in
working for longer hours.

The entire report described the types of businesses in hospitality sector such as Food and
beverages, Travel & tourism, Lodging, etc. Further is concluded a range of operational and
functional departments with operational roles within hospitality industry. Lastly it explained
skills required for working within the sector.
