INTRODUCTION
Hospitality industry is wide-concept that includes hotels and resorts that provide short
term or transitional services to its customers which include stay, food, entertainment and others
factors. It work as mutual understanding between guest and host. Now a days hospitality refers to
various services that are food and beverage, drinks, accommodation etc. that contribute for
increasing the national income of government (Williams, 2012). This present assignment is
written in context of Travel-lodge which is operating their business in hospitality industry.
Specifically in hotels its headquartered is situated in Thame, UK. This assignment covers the
PESTLE and SWOT analysis in context of hospitality industry and the contribution of hospitality
business in economic development of country. At last some skills is defined that are essential to
perform different roles in hospitality sector.
TASK 1
P1 Types of business within hospitality industry
This task covers broad categories of products and service such as event planning, food
etc. that are offer by an organisation to its customers in tourism industry. Some types of business
that offer under hospitality industry is as follow:
Lodging Accommodation- The concept of accommodation is very large or wide in this
an organisation include various services such as resorts and hotels. It is broad sector that range
from bed & breakfast, lodging, suites and resorts. Like Travel-lodge provides shelter for
travellers that maintain their privacy and provide essential amenities for making their journey
comfortable. This work as a bridge between customer and company by fulfilling the gap of their
stay, food and other essential needs.
Food & Beverage- This function start with the production of food and further it is
explored into other food sector also such as food transportation and storage. In context of travel-
lodge they serve organic and healthy food to its customers like fruits and juice, pulse etc. For this
food department represent their dishes with attractive presentation so they customer gain best
hospitality experience (Weinstein and Morritt, 2012). Along with effective services hospitality
sector also offers products such as food, wardrobe function etc. to customers through which they
generate trust and loyalty in perception of consumers.

Travel and tourism- This is the major task or business operation that is performed by
hospitality industry. It is a sector which introduce several ways or methods to move people in
different areas such as trains, airlines, ships etc. If a region want to developed it is important for
them to executive effective services of hospitality industry because it brings more number of
travellers particular for their industry. Like travel-lodge is domain as backbone for their origin
country. For travel-lodge it work as essential service or activity that helps them to accomplish
their goal and sustain them for longer period in the industry (Tresidder and Hirst, 2012).
Entertainment industry- The hospitality sector include various types of essential
functions that attract customers to complete their business. For all individuals who are buyers of
hospitality service travel one place from other want to spend some time with fun activities. So
they make change from daily routine activities. In context of travel lodge they arrange some
sport activities, different rides, adventure trip etc. through which loyal customers for business are
generated. This is included as service which offers or provide great and memorable experience
to travellers or customers.
P2 Operational and functional departments for a hospitality business.
The hospitality sector introduce a wide area which includes different types of services
such as convenience facility, ward bore facility and products industry such as food, drinks etc.
This task cover operational and functional department of company that helps Travel-lodge to
accomplish their targets.
Marketing- This department in needed in every type of organisation because every
business require promotion. For this marketing team is responsible that helps an organisation to
convert a prospect into paying guest or lead. Through effective marketing it is essential
management shares essential information to its target audience with the help of various tools
such as social media, SEO and content marketing. In circumstance of travel-lodge it is essential
for them to promote their company through creative and unique advertisement because it attracts
more audience that help to covers wide area of market (Sánchez-Ollero, and et. al., 2014).
Housekeeping- In hospitality industry this is the essential task that is performed by each
organisation, it includes to keep room clean and neat so that they give good experience to its
customers. It is the responsibility of house keeping department to clean all the rooms and floor of
hotel which determine that their performance contribute positive results for the organisation.

Example- HR Management of travel-lodge hire suitable and right candidates for an
housekeeping so they attract more number of customers.
Finance department- The primary function of financial department is to ensure the
financial stability of an organisation by performing essential activities such as to maintain
financial records, making cash and fund flow statement and profit & loss account which ensure
the steady cash flow for their daily operations. Like Travel-lodge maintain proper records of
their funds through which it is easy to analysis financial transaction for its business. Along with
this it helps to identify required funds that are required to make a new project.
Administration- In the context of hospitality sector administration department work as
integral role that works as bridge between all functions of the organisation. It is useful for travel-
lodge as it combine all the activities of an organisation through which they achieve similar goal
and target for the company (Polo-Peña and et. al., 2012). Like finance department manage the
funds for all departments of the company which is useful for payment, investment and
forecasting for the project.
P3 Contribution of hospitality industry in local, national and international economy
Travel and tourism are the major aspect that describe a hospitality business or sector. In
context these task some points are covered that show contribution of hospitality business in the
economy of country.
Local economy- The local economy of a country is largely impacted by hospitality
business as they govern or generate more employment opportunities for the society. In context of
travel-lodge large number of opportunities are generated by them which involve employment
generation, collection of tax and by increasing the income of individuals by providing them
different opportunities. Along with these hospitality sector increase the growth for all local
region of the country. This aspect include benefits for society individuals, business or
organisation all will get benefited if number of tourist increases to visit their country. Example-
management of travel-lodge go beyond the destinations like now they provide luxurious food,
rides in natural areas through which they contribute more for the economic growth of company
(Cooper, 2012).
National economy- Economic factors include all policy, rules and regulations that
directly impact on the monetary value of country such as fiscal policy, GDP etc. In today era
hospitality sector is growing industry by offering or creating several opportunities for the nation

it increase high rate of import and export, business opportunities etc. Travel-lodge developed the
brand value of an country by positively impacting on the image and identity of country. Apart
form this it helps an organisation increasing the number of travellers to visit their country
through implementing flexible tourist policy.
International economy- Tourism introduce the broader factor in which different types of
services contributed efforts to achieve similar factors through which the growth of an
organisation as well as country will increased. For this expansion travel-lodge impact and
touches different industry factors in direct or indirect way. In present scenario travel and tourism
contribute in global economy through employment generation, foreign exchange, goodwill etc.
which gain positive results in increasing economic of country.
P4 Operational roles in context of hospitality businesses
In operational manager almost in each business they are essential personnel that are part
of upper management who monitor the performance of company that they are performing to their
best potential. Some roles that are present in hospitality sector is as follow:
Increasing satisfaction- The effective operational manager of an hotel industry perform
different roles such as manager, employ, staff etc. with similar motive that is to increase the
satisfaction of their customers (Minazzi, 2015). For this they increase facility of different
functions in hospitality sector like healthy food, quick service through which fulfil demand of
customer in effective way. In context of travel-lodge they provides various offers to their loyal
customers it helps them to define and share memorable experience with others.
Enhancing efficiency- It is the responsibility of director to increase the efficiency of
different operation that are performed by organisation it includes food department, lodging and
accommodation facility etc. For example- In context of travel-lodge if the number of customers
increased then operational manager implement short term strategy such as recruiting more work-
force. As they helps them to fulfil needs or demand of customers quickly.
Coordinating training- Adequate training of staff helps an organisation to reduce the cost
of production or services that are provided by them to its customers. Along with this
organisation use their resources in optimum way and reduce the waste of resources by
controlling the unnecessary activities that are performed by travel-lodge. The training aspect or
method manage and co-ordinate different department of an organisation through which they
encourage and emerge them for achieving the similar goal.

sector formulate or develop an effective communication channel. This helps them to interact
directly with their customers and services providers. In context of Travel-lodge it helps an
organisation to promote better results for the organisation as it improve the quality of service
delivery because of effective supply from suppliers (Bowie, and et. al., 2016). Example- In case
when food department runs out of food ingredients that prepare a dish because of its increasing
demand then they directly approach to its supplier to provide essential ingredients with in short
notice period.

The skill is the type of work or activity that is learned by a person from special training
and knowledge. With high skills it is easy for an employ to perform the task or activity
professionally some ability that are require for an employ who is working in hospitality industry
are given below:
Commitment- For becoming an successful employee in hospitality industry it is essential
for them that they are totally committed for the customer satisfaction. In context of travel-lodge
they provide effective training to its employees through seminars, work-shops, interact with
expert etc. which helps to increase their productivity of their task. This role is required by all
employees of an organisation but in present scenario employees are not committed towards their
jobs because there are enough alternatives are present in company through which they easily
switch on other job.
Communication skill- In a hospitality business communication is the essential skill that
is required in all departments and job roles of an industry. Their are two type of communication
which is oral and written. For travel lodge it is essential that they select those candidates which
has impressive speaking and writing skills (Bowie and Buttle, 2013). In present scenario this
work as strength for the management as they has effective employees which has good
communication skill. Along with this skill an employ easily understand the customer need and
fulfil them with in pre-determine time period.
Enthusiasm- Great employees of hospitality or any other industry perform their work
with more enthusiasm. This increase the morale of employees and they work to strive their job

increases the performance of employees. As it will also help an organisation to increase customer

Team work- All the employees of an hospitality industry has to work together because all
the functions are inter-related with each others. They all work for the achievement of similar goal
which is to increase the customer satisfaction by organising team members and their job roles for
the organisation. In regards of travel-lodge management provide training to its employees which
helps them to work as members of organisation (Alserhan, 2016). In present situation, travel-
lodge has to face issue regarding employees conflicts that is reducing or impacting on the
productivity of the organisation.

From the above report it is concluded that there are different types of business are
benefited with the functions of hospitality organisation. To complete the activities of hospitality
company, marketing, housekeeping, administration and other functional and operational

industry is working as backbone of country and contribute to develop the economic condition of
local, national as well as inter-national by bringing foreign exchange in the country. At last some
necessary skill which are communication and team work is explained that are necessary to
perform a role in organisation.
