INTRODUCTION
Hospitality industry mainly includes various activities which are related to the service
industry. These generally includes food and drink, event planning, cruise line, etc. This type of
sector generally deals with different type of people for operating their day to day operations. The
competition level in this type of industry is very high. Due to this it becomes necessary for the
organisations to make plans for attracting large number of customers(Ban, 2012). The
organisation chosen for this report is Whitbread which is one of the biggest multinational hotel
of UK. Major topics Covered in this report are various types of business, the products and
services they offer, range of operational and functional departments and the contribution of
hospitality industry to local, national and international economies. The political, economic,
social and technological factors will also be analysed which directly or indirectly affect the
development of organisations. With the help of SWOT analysis organisation will also be able to
take better decisions for the future course of action.

GDP of the country. Hospitality industry is contributing to the growth and cultural environment
of the world. The focus of hospitality industry is to expand its services at global, national and
local level. Restaurants and travel sector plays a major role in the growth and success of this type
of industry. Approximately 700 million tourists travel to various parts of UK and its annual
growth rate is of 4.9%. Hospitality industry is also able to provide employment opportunities to
the individuals of UK. This means with the help of hospitality industry employment can be given
to almost 2.5 million people. Due to increase in growth and expansion of hospitality industry
many food chain retailers such as McDonald's, Burger King have opened their stores where large

of this they can easily grow and en chance their business at the global level. The competition

is also given to the competitors which are operating their business in same kind of industry.

P4 Investigate a range of different operational roles within the hospitality industry.
There are various kinds of departments in Whitbread which are operated and managed by
the employee's of the organisation. The employee's are required to follow some roles and
responsibilities so that goals and target are achieved within limited period of time. These roles
generally include- receptionist, housekeeping, security, etc. The major type of roles which are
performed in Whitbread are mentioned below-
Role of division manager- The work of divison manager in Whitbread is to guide and
manage the employee's who are working in front office departments of the hotel. It is the duty of
division manager to coordinate and communicate vital information to other departments of the
hotel. Information are generally related to details of visitors and customer's of the hotel. Division
manager of Whitbread perform the function of staffing, preparing budget, supervising its
subordinates and preparing plan on monthly basis(Yu, Byun and Lee, 2014).
Role of receptionist- The work of receptionist is to keep records regarding reservation of
tourists, assign them rooms as per their needs and demands, etc. Receptionist are also expected to
coordinate with the housekeeping department regarding cleaning and maintainence of rooms. It
is the duty of receptionist to prepare appropriate and systematic records regarding the check in
and check out of visitors(Denizci Guillet and Mohammed, 2015). This is because if receptionist
of Whitbread fails in doing this work of other departments might also get affected negatively.
