Executive summary
Career management is one of the most important aspects that must be followed while setting a
career of someone’s own choice. This is a very important step that helps in understanding about
the individual needs of the employees and the skills that are needed to support them. In order to
shine as a manager one has to abide by this system as this will help him to support all the team
mates by giving them the right kind of training. The motivation theory of Maslow has also been
very useful in satisfying the different needs within the lives of each individual. This helped in
getting the motivation right from the grass root level.
Introduction
I want to join the hotel and hospitality sector as I grow up. It is for this reason that I have
to undertake detailed analyses of the roles that I will have to play in the future. There are some
responsibilities that are crucial as part of the hotel and the hospitality industry sectors. Right
from my school days I have dreamt of becoming a successful manager in one of the top, well
furnished and posh hotels of Australia
This profession is of much importance to me as it will help me to get proper exposure to
the corporate world. I will also be able to meet many new people coming from different social
and cultural backgrounds. This will help me in developing a deep and intricate understanding of
the cultural and religious beliefs of different employees and guests. I have to focus on skills like
teamwork. This is of utmost importance as this will help me to work in a cooperative and
supportive manner. I will be able to provide the support and help to all my co-workers.
Communication skill is also one of the major skills that I will have to undertake. This will help

me to communicate clearly with all the concerned stakeholders. In order to work as an ideal
manager I will have to undertake many important Group discussion and personal interview
sessions. Organization skill is of utmost importance as I will have to work as a multi-tasker. I
will have to look after the front desk, property management, reservation facilities, employee
guest relationships, GM meeting and other such functions many other such activities.
My Career
I am doing graduation in the field of business and management. It is after enrolling
myself in the business studies that I have been able to understand about the different
management positions. I was attracted to take up the management position. It is for this reason
that I have taken up an interest in the same field. I see the career of a manager as my broader
career. I have been able to understand the advantages that one will get after taking up the career
of a manager. Thus I have chosen to pursue my graduation in the field of management studies
with a specialization in the hotel and the hospitality sector. This will help me to get all the
possible support for establishing myself as an ideal manager.
I have been able to understand that career management is of utmost importance for being
successful in life. Msengeti and Obwogi (2015) had stated that career management is one of the
most important activities that must be undertaken in order to set a clear and well-organized
career path. However, Fok and Young (2016) has argued that this process has at times turned
about to be tiresome as it needs a lot of devotion, patience and time. However I have always
given huge importance to the career management procedure as it helps me to identify my
weaknesses and my strengths (Callanan, Perri and Tomkowicz 2017). It helps me to stay aware
of the new skills that I need to develop in order to flourish in the long run. I have been able to

make a well planned and organized routine through which I can move in a step by step manner.
This has also helped me to understand the employee needs and how to solve them by using the
resources that are actually needed.
Goal Setting
I have set both short and long term goals that will be helping me to attain my objective in
a proper and organized manner.
Short term goals
Financial skills
I want to develop this skill within a short period of time as it is very important in this
field. It is the manager who has to undertake the role of setting the room rates, budgets and also
the rate of the other hotel and hospitality sector services. If there are any errors in the cash flow
or shortage in the capital funds of the hotels, the manager will be the first person to be
questioned. Thus I have to learn the accounting rules in order to keep a proper eye over the
budget of the hotel
Communication skills
This is also my short term goal as I will have to communicate with a large number of
stakeholders as part of the hotel and hospitality sector. I will have to communicate with the
internal stakeholders like the team members, Assistant manager, supervisors, product specialist,
quality assurance, Chefs, laundry sector and many others. On the other hand the external
stakeholders like local governing bodies, raw material suppliers and others have to be
communicated. A thorough communication has to be undertaken right from the initial stages so

that I can develop a horizontal communication system within the organization. This will help me
to establish myself approachable and transparent with my employees. I will be able to take the
necessary feedbacks and also convey important organizational decisions across all the
employees.
Long term skills
People skills
This is one of the most important skills that I will try to inculcate within myself in order to
become a successful manager. I consider interpersonal skills as one of the most essential skills of
an ideal manager. Every day the manager has to meet with so many different people approaching
with different issues. The manager has to keep a stress free and calm mind in order to hear all
these issues and then solve them accordingly
Critical thinking skills
A per my perception developing a critical skill is a long process. Ideal managers must have quick
decision making and judgment power. I will have to develop this skill within myself so that I can
become a successful manager (Lee and Ok 2016). I will have to make sure that I always think
about the effects of certain decisions before taking it. I will have to develop a critical thinking
skill by questioning the existing norms. For an instance the norm of unequal pay to the male and
female employees is a good example. Before accepting this norm, I will have to cross-question
myself before accepting any rules and also before starting any rules.

Computer Skills
I order to become a successful manager in future; I will have to develop the computer skills and
the modern digitalized skills that will help me to do all the work in a time optimizing and error-
free manner.
Motivation theory model
In order to meet with all the short and long term goals, I will have to abide by the motivation
theory of Maslow (Dohlman et al. 2019). This will help me to proceed in a step by step manner. I
feel that in order to establish myself as a successful manager I will have to make sure that I am
being able to satisfy all my needs.
Psychological needs-I will make sure that I am fulfilling all my basic needs. I am thankful that I
am getting all the resources to satisfy my basic needs of food, clothing and shelter. This has
always acted as the basic motivation. This helps me to think about the rest of the steps involved
in attaining my career.
Safety needs
The safety needs like a well-paying job and a good educational institution are also very helpful. I
feel that I am fortunate as I have a supportive family and also a good educational background. I
feel secure as I know that my mentors and teammates are there to support me.

Belongingness
This level of the hierarchical theory deals with the satisfaction of social needs like love,
friendship and belongingness. I will always like to stay close to a good and cooperative group of
friends and co-workers that will help me to get proper moral and social support.
Self-esteem
On satisfying all these levels of need will be able to become self-dependent and develop a
decision making power. As I have been able to develop a certain satisfactory level in all these
aspects I have also developed the self-esteem of my own that will be beneficial in my career as a
manager.
Conclusion
Thus it can be concluded that career management is one of the most important aspects to
prosper in life. I will follow the career management method as it will help me to understand the
strengths and the weaknesses that are present within me. I will be able to understand not only my
own needs but the individual needs of my tea, members as well. This will enable me to align the
skill gaps with the actual training and development that will be needed. The career goals can be
obtained successfully only with proper motivation. In order to get the motivation throughout I
will also follow each step of the Maslow’s need theory. This will enable me to look after each
and every level of need right from the basic necessities of life. Following this method will also
be very useful in my career.

I want to work in the hotel and hospitality sector. This is because I feel this sector will

This sector has a wide range of career opportunities. After joining the hotel and
hospitality industry one can take up the role of a receptionist, a front desk crew member,
housekeeping head, chef, kitchen captain, Assistant Manager, General Manager and many more.
There are many career opportunities in this aspect. The hotel and the hospitality sector
will give opportunities like working as a Chef, HR manager, Laundry head, manager and other
such opportunities. I know that each of this profession is respectable but I want to apply for the
post of a manager as this will give me a very good exposure.
Information on the career challenges within this industry sector; and an evaluation of the
most appealing aspects of this industry sector for YOU personally.
Challenges in this industry are lack of a proper communication skill and interpersonal
skill. In order to shine in this field one has to have a brilliant communication power. This will
help them to communicate with people in a very free, friendly and approachable manner. There
will be many guests coming from many different cultures. Thus the professionals working in this

field have to take care of each of the needs and demands of their guests by making sure that they
are not giving any changes of complaints. Cross-cultural competence is also one of the big
issues or hurdles that one can face. The professionals have to work in a very neutral and
unbiased way. They have to make sure that none of the guests are being bullied or given less
priority because of their religious or cultural backgrounds.
I personally find certain factor much appealing in this sector. This is the sector that can
give me huge exposure to the external world right after my joining. I will be able to learn about
different cultures and ethnicity of people coming from different parts of the world. Apart from
this I will also get training from the most eminent hoteliers. This sector will not only help me to
earn a good monetary benefit but will also help in my career development and growth. The other
factor that I personally find good is the on job training facility. The hotel industry is a very
good learning platform, as it helps in understanding about the skill gaps that I need to fulfill. I
can do this work while I am already working. In other words I do not need to take any extra
leave in order to get the skill development trainings. On job training facility helps in getting
practical work experience and also learns at the same time.
