4PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Introduction
In any business organisation, the skill level of the employees is always a decisive factor for the
business success of that organisation. However, the employees of an organisation do not attain
their maximum expertise level right after joining the organisation, which is why the employees
have continuously go through professional developments in order to make themselves more
productive (Marić, 2017). This study will highlight the various aspects of on-going professional
developments for a professional employee, and the various skill requirements in specific
designations of hospitality industry. Moreover, as I am an interior designer in the Bulgari Hotel
in the UK, a professional development plan in the context of my career will be designed. Lastly,
various transferable skills for job applications in the context of a range of service industries will
be assessed.
LO1: Importance of on-going professional development and self-directed learning to
enhance career opportunities and professional identity (P1 & P2)
Role of on-going professional development in the organisation
In this continuously evolving market, the business operations and strategies of the organisations
are constantly changing, and their employees have to continuously develop their professional
skills in order to maintain their professional efficiency level. The primary role of continuous
professional development for the employees is to allow them to match their skills with the
contemporary trends in business operations. As I am an interior designer in Bulgari Hotel UK,
the primary role of continuous professional development in my career is to increase my expertise
and efficiency in organising and managing the staffs and work environment of interior design
department. This will ensure that the overall productivity and operational efficiency of Bulgari
Hotel UK is increased (www.bulgarihotels.com, 2019).

5PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The employers and organisations are increasingly seeking out employees who have the
enthusiasm to learn new skills and enhance their existing skills in order to increase their
productivity.
Continuously developing own professional skills also increases the chances for
promotion and higher salary package (Nasreen and Odhiambo, 2018). In my case, I
became an experienced interior designer from a novice interior artist due to my on-going
professional development in my interior designing skills and my skill to predict
upcoming popular interior design trends.
Continuous professional development also increases the adaptability of professional
personnel into a changing business environment (GV, 2018). In my case, my continuous
professional development has allowed me to increase my capability of quickly adapt to
the newer designing techniques and stay competitive.
Importance of on-going professional development and professional skill requirements
For any ambitious professional person, on-going professional development is very important for
him or her, as it allows the person to continuously improve his or her performance efficiency and
increase his or her value as an employee to the business organisations in that particular industry
(Peeters, Sharmahd and Budginaite, 2018). As I continuously develop my skills as an interior
designer, the quality of my designs are also increasing over time, increasing my contribution in
the productivity of Bulgari Hotel, and helping it to remain competitive in the market.
On the other hand, the organisations and employers are always on the lookout for certain
professional skills that are useful for increasing the productivity of their business operations
(Uarije et al., 2017). Naturally, this skill requirement is different for different business industries.
In case of interior design industry, the professional skills that are necessary for a interior designer
to be successful are mostly related to artistic sense and abilities. Paying attention to even the
finest design detail and being able to predict future interior trends are two essential skills that set
an expert interior designer apart from a novice artist.
Employer expectations of professional skills and standards

2018). The employers also maintain particular standards for the level of these professional skills.
In case of Bulgari Hotel UK, they look for professional people with a standard level of artistic
sense and drawing ability as interior designer for their design department. They also expect a
certain level of interior trend prediction ability from their designers, which allows their design
department to accurately develop popular designs to allow Bulgari Hotel to gain an edge over
their market competitors.
Own skills and competencies to meet employer expectation of professional skills needed for the
employment within a specific job role
As an interior designer, I have a standard level of artistic sense and drawing skills, which allow
me to properly draw the designs of room interiors. My sense of showpiece positioning also
allows me to pick up the most suited arrangements for the rooms of Bulgari Hotel, essentially
increasing its appeal to the customers. Since Bulgari Hotel is a large 5-star hotel, they require
interior designers who are able to design room decorations according to various cultures and
preferences of the different countries. Since I have a good level of knowledge about the various
design and colour preferences of the different countries across the globe, it allows me to design
the rooms in a way that they will be liked by people from any culture. My skills of predicting the
upcoming interior trends is also useful to Bulgari Hotel, as it allows me to design popular interior
decorations for them, which increases the productivity for Bulgari Hotel.
LO2: Own skills, competencies and diverse learning and development approaches (P3 &

Assess abilities, skills and competencies using key methods and techniques
As corporations, tend to adapt in the fast changing environment, so does the employees too. To
make the work smooth, the HR managers must know it precisely on what skills company’s staffs
have already, or what competencies they lack in general (Brody and Hadar, 2015). Since I am
working in Bulgari hotel, which is regarded as the luxury hotel in UK, it includes large stock of
interior decorations under its chain. For identifying my skills, and competencies, I have
performed a skills audit that would be effective to analyse the development approach in my

Developmental approach to develop personal and professional skills of the job role
A key development approach that I can subdue towards my job role in Bulgari Hotel could be
gathering knowledge from major sources. As I believe that analysing and recording my key
achievements in a certain timeframe will be good, then I can work through a continuous cycle to
reflect on my experiences and setting long-term goals. A Development approach could be
“Brainstorming technique”, which will work as a problem solving approach to my lateral
thinking (Lyons et al. 2016). By using this method, I can open up new possibilities of working as
an interior decorator to breakdown incorrect assumptions to limit the problems. Analysis and
judgment during the stage will lead to creativity and innovation in my design work. I also know
that exploring solutions will be conventional for me, so that I can be more creative and
personalised on the designs of interior decorations that I create in common for Bulgari Hotel,
UK.
