INTRODUCTION
Personal and professional development is about seeking out the ways to do our job better.
It include both soft and hard skills. Professional skills contain new skills and experiences and it is
related to our current role or next role which we want to do. whereas personal development
include practices that improve awareness and identify, build human capital and enhance the
quality of life to realization of dreams and aspiration. For these skills a person must have mentally
healthy. Mental wealth is a well being state, in which an individual understand their own abilities,
can work fruitfully and productively, can cope with normal stresses of life and able to contributes
in their community (Aldwean, 2021). It is about how we can tap into our thoughts,emotions and
feelings to re- frame how we are viewing our life. An individual with all these skills and metal
wealth can work efficiently in the hospitality sector. Hospitality sector is wide category of field
which include food and drink services, lodging, events planning travel and theme parks etc. it can
be categorized into three parts on the basis of accommodation, food and beverage and travel or
tourism. this industry addressing customers satisfaction by by providing them a good experience.
In this report we it will include the necessary skills which are required by the hospitality industry,
skill audit, SWOT of an individual and self appraisal.
Skills required by the hospitality industry
It require some skills in an individual to work with in hospitality, events and tourism
industries. These skills are given below:
Communication skills- This skill refers to the ability of giving and receiving some kind of
information, ideas and thought in understandable manner. It include speaking, listing and
observing etc. This skill highly values in the hospitality and tourism industry. Because an
individual have to deal with many people from different background, nationalities and age
etc. so it is very important to communicate with them in a way to make clear
understandable them. They have to communicate in a positive way at the time of customer
facing and team oriented role. This skill is very vital in ensuring customer satisfaction and
happiness (Chen, 2020).
Multitasking skill- It is the process of to manage multiple responsibilities at a time by
focusing on task while keeping track of other task. It is the execution of more than single
task simultaneously. It is very difficult to work in the hospitality industry, because there is

always hectic situation. To handle this situation the employees must have the ability to
multitasking and also handle other task at the same time will serve them well. They should
clear about how to prioritise and manage their time effectively, they also need to be able so
that they can handle pressure with calmly.
Professionalism skill- It is a skill or polite behaviour that is expectable from an individual
in a more formal manner who is trained to do a job well. It is collection of qualities or code
of conduct which is characterize accepted practice within an hotel or organisation. In
hospitality or travel industries professionalisms is showing by recognizing and respecting
their guest is another skill. That time the staff uphold the brand reputation of their hotel or
agencies. At the time of dealing with an irritating or angry customer, the employees should
not react negatively and stay calm (Verhoeven, Heerwegh, and De Wit, 2020).
Adaptability skill- It is a soft skill which means being able to new skills and behaviour
very rapidly in response to changing the circumstances. It expand the capacity to handle
changes at the work place. In hospitality industry the employees have to deal with
unpredictable situation. There is chances of changes in their shifting or other things. So the
staff must remain very flexible with their plans to ensure that they can work in these
typical situation. It require string flexibility to adopt and understand how to prioritize these
circumstances (Drouin and et. al., 2021).
Cultural awareness- It is the understanding and recognising of similarities and difference
among two or more different culture. In hospitality industry there is a large number of
customers from different place and cultural background. They have different values,
beliefs, personality and expectation, so it is important to take this into account for their
comfort. If the employees have the ability to accept and accommodating these difference
then it will make the workplace's reputation exceptional. Customers will feel comfortable
visiting in that hotel or organisation. For this they have to learn about cultural knowledge,
by doing this they will be able to identify the different needs and other approaches.
Team work skill- It is a collaborative effort of any group and people cooperate with each
other at the work to achieve a common goal. In the hospitality industry, almost every job
role involve the teamwork. It is very essential in this sector because of fast -paced and ever
changing nature of this industry. It bring a sense of trust, security and loyalty to

employees. It is important for an efficient and profitable business,Without it no work can
be success.
Time management skill - It is the activity of organising and planing of dividing the time
between some specific activities. This skill enable us to work smarter,an effective time
management include the better scheduling, better organisation and improved decision
making. In the hospitality industry this skill require to complete the job in a timely manner
and for run the hotel very smoothly. In this sector time is very important, because it is a
essential part of the services guest expect. It is helpful in finishing their work as soon as
possible without compromising the work quality.
Problem solving skills- It is the process of identifying difficulties and taking the
appropriate course of action. This skill help an individual to determine the reason of an
issue and how to to resolve it at workplace (Fung and et. al., 2021). The hospitality sector
is customers focused, so staff have to deal with the multiple queries and problem on daily
basis. With this skill they can deal with these difficulties very effectively. This skill is
very essential in this industry, it is the central parts of working there. Because they have to
be able to determine the issues customers having, create a plan of action to resolve these
issues and follow through with the guest afterword to ensure their satisfaction.
Skills audit
It is a process or systematic assessment that can be used to determine the skill gaps in the
organisation. It is an essential process to measuring and recording the skills of a person or a group,
where the organisation can attain their goals and provide training and development , where it is to
be needed.

This techniques assessing four aspects to analysis what we can do best. It include strength,
weakness, opportunities and threat that we faces. This analysis help us to focus on our capabilities,
minimize the imperfection and take a great advantage of opportunities available with us.
Strength Weakness
My Communication skill is very good
as I am very comfortable and easily
communicate with other employees as
well as other individuals. I am a good
listener which enhance my this skill.
The Adaptability is very easy to me,
because these are flexible. And I am
very flexible and can change myself
according to the situations or
circumstances.
I am a bit weak Time management,
because this skill is very essential for
the hospitality industry and I am not
able to divide the time table in an
appropriate manner
Problem solving skill require good
ideas and thoughts to solve an issue.
And my this skill is not so good and
accurate, sometime I feel a little bit
confused during analysing the solution
of any problem.
Opportunities Threat
I am very aware about the cultural
difference in the economy and easily
understand their choice, preference etc.
It is a benefits for me to work in that
industry.
Professionalism is a threat for me,
because it require all the things and
skills in a formal manner. And I am not
so professional as much it require in
these industries.

The multitasking skill is a big hurdle for
me, because I can do only a single work
at a time. I can not handle multi task
during the same time.
Self appraisal analysis
It is a self evaluation of our performance during a specific time period at the work. It is the
process to observe the value of own performance and also analyses the professional actions with
the systematic operation (Peng, 20Tytler, 2020). In this we examine ourselves in attempt to
observe and learn something more about ourselves. It include an individual's likes, dislikes, habits,
behaviour and attitude all these can be found during that process. It is very essential for an
individual and has a great importance in their life.
When an individual given the opportunity of self- evaluate then the feel empowered. They
feel that their opinion also matter and are taken into account during performance
assessment discussion. So they feel more confident and motivate for hard work.
It provide employees a platform to give honest review about how they are feeling
regarding their job performance. It ensure that the given information captured during this
process bring some meaningful changes in the organisation(Hosseini and
Kazeminajafabadi, 2020).
By self-appraisal individual get to know about their strength and weakness. They
determine weak areas in which the need improvement. It provide them better career
prospects and the self-appraisal is a good opportunity to help the employees in their
growth.
Evaluation- In this discussion I identified my strength and weakness like I am good in the
communication skill and very flexible to adopt the changes. I am further lacking in the time

industry. It require multiple skills like problem solving, communication skill, time management,
cultural awareness and other etc. the PDP is an essential part for the development of an individual
because it helps them in to their growth and to attain future goals. by the skill audit we can get
about our lacking points and strengths. It will help us in developing our skills and career. The
SWOT analysis aware an individual about the opportunity, which they can use for their growth.
The self evaluation also play an important role in an individual's life. It motivate them and make
feel them that they are also important resources for the organisation and work. It help the
employees to become responsive towards their strength and weakness and help them to become
more dedicated towards their career development.
